Downey Jr. also told the audience how he never made it past high school.
âOn the flip side, I did play and interesting and iconic character for 11 years, Tony Stark,â he said, adding that what he liked about Stark was that he went from a âsoulless war profiteer to a man who was willing to sacrifice himself for the good of the community.â
Downey Jr., himself, also had to personally change, transforming from a troubled youth into a reliable actor and member of an ensemble acting team, as part of the âAvengersâ moviesâ cast.
âInterestingly enough, when you want to change, the universe puts people in your life that facilitate that,â he said.
And his fame gives him access to all sorts of people.
âRecently, I was at a table with super smart, impressive, expert folks about six months ago, and the following statement was made: âbetween robotics and technology, we could probably clean up the planet significantly, if not entirely within a decade,ââ he said, and the room burst into applause.
âBeing essentially a 54-year-old child,â he said referring to himself, âI said, âLetâs do it! Letâs commit to a process, letâs form a coalition.â And that did not inspire the reaction I expected. It was dead silence.â
(He used courser language involving bodily waste and smells in an elevator to describe the reaction he got.)
Those smart intellectuals, who thought the tech could do it, also thought that overcoming bureaucracy, sharing intellectual property, intergovernmental cooperation would be too impossible to actually make it happen.
But Downey Jr. wants to try anyway.
âI know itâs a kumbaya type dream. Itâs a logistical clusterfâk,â he said. âIâm down with dedicating myself to maybe one small part of making good on that statement, even in abject failure, itâs still the best idea Iâve ever had.â
So at this robotics show, he announced his Footprint Coalition, which is still so new, its website hasnât even been set up yet. The actor is promising that the Coalition will be officially off the ground in April 2020 and that heâs willing to spend âthe next 11 yearsâ working on it.
âIâve got to do something. Iâm unemployed,â he joked, a reference to the ending of the latest âAvengers: Endgameâ movie.

The one thing I will never forget from Endgame is Tony Stark staring at Peter Parker like he was seeing the universe for the first time. Whatever else may have happened, he loved that kid until the end.
my thoughts on Endgame [contains spoilers, obviously]
long rant. this is mostly a copy of my reply to a previous tumblr post, but with more detail.
first off, I personally loved the CGI and effects and all that. It was really well done and the parts where Strange returns them all back to Earth and the scene w the female heroes protecting Peter/the gauntlet was beautiful. the soundtrack was also really nice.
second, Iâm really upset about the deaths but like,, they were done beautifully, if that makes any sense?? Tonyâs especially. like,, wow. he didnât have to do that But He Did. as sad as I am and as much as I wish he lived on, it was still a touching scene. Natasha too, although to a lesser degree. still, her sacrifice made me cry so much. she knew Clint had a family and thought she didnât when in fact she did, and she chose to save the world. sheâs such a strong character and Scarlett Johannson did a great job.
Iâm super glad Tony was the one to kill Thanos in the end. like,, using the gauntlet against him and turning him and HIS army to dust? a fucking power move. big dick energy. amazing. âI Am Iron Manâ. fucking whack. I cried so much my mom judged me smh. I wanted either him or Nebula to kill Thanos in the end, as the latter has suffered abuse and torture like no other, from someone she called âfatherâ. maybe Iâm biased, but Iâm glad Captain Marvel didnât defeat him. like yeah, she proved helpful with bringing Tony back to Earth and the end battle, but thatâs really it, unless I missed something. but yeah. Iâm glad Thor defeated him the first time and then Tony, and Nebula got to redeem herself.
speaking of Nebula and Thor, I have lots to say. for the former: Iâve seen people wondering why Nebula could kill her old self yet they couldnât bring back Natasha. I think that had to do with the fact that 1) old Nebula was in present time and 2) old and current Nebula shared one mind (which is how Thanos knew the Avengers were time travelling to find the Stones). thatâs why old Nebula died and it didnât affect present Nebula. idk time is weird like that, ask Doctor Who. as for Thor: Iâm upset he didnât get much of a âdevelopmentâ from his drunken self, although since heâs joined the Guardians crew and thereâs apparently going to be a Guardians of the Galaxy 3, Iâm hoping to see more Thor development as well as answers to Loki soon.
finally, for now, Iâm upset that Steve got back with Peggy. yeah, they were cute in the first Captain America movie and I was definitely rooting for them at the time, but we hear her say (when sheâs older) that she grew up happy and moved on, and the fact that Steve went back and changed that was eh imo. :/ Iâm also iffy about him passing the mantle to Sam. I love Sam, donât get me wrong, but like Bucky??? Iâm p sure Bucky becomes the new âCaptain Americaâ in the comics (but I may be wrong). But Iâm also happy for Sam sooo,, itâs weird lol

The bond theyâve formed over the last two movies is pretty strong and Tony has a great deal of responsibility for Peter and his actions. I think Peter may grate on Tony a bit more in this movie, which is fun. Itâs a fun back-and-forth, like a dad-son type situation.
