Scar wished he could go back in time. Maybe he could have protected Grian better. Done something differently. Been better, faster, something! Maybe he wouldn't be sitting at Grian's bedside while monitors chirped around him.
Just hours earlier they had been smiling. Grian's arm was wrapped around Scar's, his fingers interlocked with the alien's. He waddled when he walked now, his stomach protruding more. He was in his 2nd trimester and was 19 weeks along. Everything had been smooth sailing so far. They had just found out last week that they were having a girl, and both parents were elated. Grian's hand rested on his belly, feeling more kicks as their daughter's protective shell dissolved. Scar couldn't be happier. Maybe he was being a little overprotective, but there was nothing wrong with that. He definitely didn't have a bruise on his hand from Cub smacking his hand away so he could perform an exam on Grian's belly. He wasn't being that protective! He was being a very healthy amount of concerned for his mate's well being! He was just hovering over Grian because he loved his partner and wanted to be near his mate, that's all.
Grian had begged him to let him stretch his legs, and how could Scar say no to those beautiful blue eyes. His tail swished behind himself contentedly, his nerves calmed by his mate's touch. Grian's waddled was cute, especially when he paused every few steps to show Scar the baby's kicks with excitement. The alien looked down at his mate with fondness. The human met those looks with a kiss.
They were on there way back to their room when it happened. There was an explosion and the ship rocked violently. Grian was thrown off his balance, which was already off centered due to his stomach. Scar's reflexes kicked in and he wrapped himself around the human to protect Grian and the baby. His tail wound around Grian's leg, and his arms were placed against Grian's back to keep him firmly against his chest. The blonde's stomach was padded by the brunette's stomach, the alien hunched over to cover the human. More tremors went through the ship before they were tossed off their feet, the ship flipping through empty space. Alarms were blaring down the halls, as the ship spun out of control. Grian's screams were muffled and Scar's head smacked into the wall. The alien, in slight delirium and panic, scrambled and reached out for something to stop them. He dug his claws into the wall and he made the quick decision to dig both hands into the ship. They slammed into the wall causing Grian to let out a pained noise. It was better than being tossed about like a pinball, as much as the pained sound made Scar panic. The brunette shifted his legs to pin the blonde against the wall, quickly ordering his mate to hold his waist firmly. The blonde's eyes were wide with fear, Scar's heart turned that he couldn't comfort his partner. Safety was the bigger matter at the moment though. He kept his head ducked down and made sure Grian was safely pinned against the wall.
It felt like hours passed before the ship and it's gravity finally righted itself. In reality it couldn't have been longer than a few minutes. Scar carefully let them both down, holding his mate firmly to make sure he didn't stumble. Grian's legs shook, but only now did he find his voice again, sore from screaming, he spoke up,
"Scar? What was that?" Grian looked up at the alien, quite shaken up, literally and figuratively. Scar cupped his face and kissed his nose, trying to reassure his partner despite his own fears.
"I don't know, get to our room. Barricade the doors. I'll let you know if it's safe." Grian paled at Scar's response but the brunette was already pushing him away, back towards their shared room.
"Grian, go, keep you and the baby safe. I'll be right back." Scar gave the human one of his familiar charming grins. It was crafted to make people feel at ease, Grian knew that well. The blonde frowned, fixing his glasses as he spoke again,
"Stay safe. Come back to us." Scar's smile faltered but he covered it up with a firm nod. Grian nodded back and turned away to head down the corridor. Scar watched for a moment before looking away and pulling out one of the daggers he kept hidden on his person.

Grian was out of breath by the time he reached his and Scar's room. He cursed himself for being out of shape even though he knew it was because of the baby. He didn't give himself much time to recover though. He shut the door and locked it tight. Jellie's fur stood on end and she sniffed at Grian anxiously upon his entrance. He wanted to reassure the space cat but he feared he didn't have any time. He turned towards the furniture to barricade the door. The furniture was heavy and he struggled to flip the switch that kept them in place, his belly getting in the way. He managed to shove a heavy dresser in front of the doorway, straining the whole time. Jellie bound over, using her head to push furniture, making things go much faster with her aide. Grian was beginning to hear the sounds of a fight, which pushed him to keep going. Once the dresser was in place he spun around to find a place to hide. His eyes landed on the closet and he quickly waddled over to it. He shoved the door open, trying to scramble inside. He paused when he saw one of Scar's guns. He took a quick glance at the door, making sure he didn't hear anyone approaching. Once he was sure he was still safe, he snatched up the gun and climbed into the walk in closet. He quickly coaxed Jellie in with him before he shut and locked that door, then he got down on the floor and crawled into the corner, hiding behind Scar's shoes and clothes. He held the gun to his chest, trying to calm his racing heart. Jellie sniffed at him again then took up her post, guarding the door.
The blonde's heart pounded in his ears and sweat rolled down his forehead. He was trying to control his breathing, the noise seeming to echo in the room. The sound of fighting still seemed to be distant but that didn't ease his worries. Sweat mixed with tears, when had he begun to cry? He swiped it away, gritting his teeth. He placed a hand over his belly, swearing to himself he would make it out. He would stay safe, Scar would come back, they would both be ok. He couldn't help the internal turmoil though. He should be out there, he should be backing up his partner. Sure he doesn't know the first thing about fighting, and anytime he tried to fight in school he usually lost. That didn't mean he couldn't help. A shot rang out, snapping him out of his thoughts. The fighting sounded closer and there was someone trying to get in the room. He could pick up a voice, his translator was quick to translate the language for him.
He strained to hear, before quickly pushing himself back into the wall. The blood had drained from his face. The alien could smell him, it smelled the scent of coming young. They knew he was vulnerable. He shut his eyes tight, focusing on keeping his breathing controlled. Every thud against the door left both his and Jellie's hair on end. There was a crack as the door broke and the voice grew so much clearer. Jellie backed up, blocking Grian from view if the closet was opened. There was loud grunts from the alien's as they shoved the blockade out of the way. Then shuffling footsteps were outside the closet door and the sound of loud sniffing could be heard. The sound became louder or quieter as the alien searched the room. They broke things and tossed things around. Grian could hear things fall and smash against the floor or walls. It felt like hours of waiting for the alien to leave.
Unfortunately, that wouldn't be happening. The footsteps stopped outside the closet. All the air in Grian's lungs seemed to turn to ice. Him and Jellie waited in tense silence. The alien outside tried the door, Grian prayed to whatever god there was out there that would listen. When had the gods ever truly cared about mortal issues though. The alien began to hit the door, or maybe that was Grian's heartbeat pounding in his ears. The door cracked, definitely not his heartbeat. The moment the door fell open, Jellie pounced. Grian struggled because of his stomach, but he got up and ran for the door. Arms wrapped around him, reacting quickly he slammed the butt of the gun into the person's stomach. He spun around and flipped the safety. A shot rang out and Grian stumbled. He watched alien fall to the floor, blood forming a pool under it. The scientist realized with a start that he was the one to fire the gun.
He didn't give himself time to think about the corpse. He dropped the gun and grabbed hold of Jellie's fur, pulling himself onto her back. He ducked his face into her neck as she teleported out of the room. Her paws hit the deck and she sprinted through the halls, teleporting anytime the fighting seems to get too close. He kept his head low, knowing from experience that keeping his head up could result in a concussion. He was doing so well too. He kept his head low and body small. Then he heard Scar's voice. His head shot up to look for his partner. Green eyes met blue before Jellie quickly teleported away. If only he had kept his head down.
They teleported into the middle of another fight on board the ship. Jellie let out a panicked sound. Grian's eyes still stared where Scar had been, and that was his downfall. A gun slammed into his chest and there was a crack as he hit the floor, hard. He gasped, trying to suck air into his lungs. Everytime he tried, there was a searing pain in his chest. Jellie's panic grew and she quickly tried to pick up her owner's mate. Grian could only watch in horror as she tried to bound over, only to be attacked. She let out a yowl of pain as a sword cut deep into her front leg. She looked over to Grian in despair before she retreated.

When Jellie teleported to Scar's side, injured and frantic, he knew something was wrong. He patted her head, whispering for her to take him to Grian, then he pulled himself onto her back. He cut down one more enemy member as Jellie bound through another portal. She screeched to a halt before a trio of aliens who stood over Grian.
One of the invaders had grabbed the human by his arm and dragged him to his feet. Pained tears were in the scientist's eyes, but he grit his teeth, trying to not let his captors see his fear. Another alien poked at his belly and he instinctively reached out to smack it's hand away. That earned him a quick but firm slap. His head swam from the impact and it was still so hard to breathe properly. This angle made the burning pain worse. There was a sound and he was dragged back swiftly. He looked up to see Scar, relief instantly filling his body. He sagged, only for that to put too much pressure on his chest and a whimper broke through his teeth.
Scar boiled with rage seeing these monsters touching his mate. His tail swished back and forth, preparing for a fight. His hands readied his sword, the gun too risky for how close the enemy was to his partner. One look at their faces and he knew they knew, it only took a small sniff to smell Scar all over Grian. Which could only mean Grian was pregnant with his young. Their sneers grew, readying their own weapons. Grian's eyes bugged, he struggled in his captor's grip, only to have a knife pressed to his neck. A squeak of surprise slipped out, but his movements stilled.
"Grian. Stay still. Do as they say. I'll handle this." Scar tried to speak calmly. It was hard when blood pounded in his ears and vibrated in his veins leaving him feeling hot and unstable. Grian couldn't even nod with the blade against his jugular. 'Cowards' was Scar's first thought. That's what they were. Cowards who used a pregnant mate as bait as well as a shield. Now that they had Grian, who wasn't just a human but a human carrying his child, they wouldn't give him up easily, he would be the perfect prize for their captain. The brunette quickly assured Jellie to take cover before his full attention was on the alien's before him. There was a pop as Jellie disappeared, and Scar was left to fight alone.
Scar let out a breath, letting his nerves flow out along with the air that was in his lungs, then he lunged. A symphony of grunts and swords biting into eachother filled the hallway. It was a familiar dance for someone who spent so much of their life fighting. He smelt copper when a blast from a gun caught his cheek, fired from the very alien that held his mate. That would just be another scar. If looks could kill, the alien would have curled in on itself screaming. He didn't have much time to dwell on such a thought, as much as he wanted to. He caught the wrist of one of the alien's, twisting their sword so that it caught the blast of a gun. He let go of the wrist and slunk back when the alien's second sword came up to try and slice through his arm. He'd really prefer to keep the rest of his limbs, he'd lost enough already. He heard the blast ricochet down the hall. He dodged shots and weaved in between his clumsy enemies. His tail wrapped around the leg of one of his foes, pulling them off their feet. Scar pounced, grinning with pleasure when the alien paled. It had nothing but a gun to defend itself. They should have kept their distance. Scar plunged his sword into their belly. He didn't have time to watch the light dim in it's eyes before there was movement in the corner of his vision. He quickly tore his sword free from the alien's belly to catch the blade that was streaking down for his head. He missed the alien's other sword, which swung down and lodged itself in his thigh. He grit his teeth, the pained sound he made coming out as a low growl. He dropped his sword, the alien's proximity making it too hard to fight with his blade. Adrenalin kept him going as he jumped for the alien, just in time to miss another shot from the gun of the alien that held Grian. It caught the alien's struggling ally in the face, the hole in it's face gurgled before dropping. The smug look was wiped off Scar's current foe's face as they rolled across the floor, grappling for dominance. The struggle was all the distraction Scar need for his tail to grab the fallen alien's gun. It was soon placed between the alien's brows. There was a click from the gun and the creature stilled and slumped. Scar savored the blood that exploded across his face. He let the body drop, his head twisting to stare at the final alien. It's head was the only one that mattered to him. He would take that one as his trophy.
Panting, blood soaking through Scar's attire, he shoved himself to his feet. He faced the final assailant. Their smugness was gone seeing two of their allies be taken down so easily. They held their gun, pressing it now to the side of Grian's temple with a trembling humanoid paw. Grian was pale from fright, but he gave his mate a small smile to reassure him. It was not that comforting considering his predicament. The brunette flexed his claws, a warning growl rumbling in his chest. His opponent stood their ground.
"Stand down. Unless you want to lose your child and your mate." The enemy soldier threatened. Scar complied, though not without shooting the alien daggers the whole time. Scar dropped whatever weapons he held and lifted his hands and tail so they could be seen. Grian watched those sharp, green eyes calculate his captors every movement. It unsettled the assailant, which was perfect, they were more likely to mess up if they were agitated. Mess up they did. Their shoulders slumped with relief, but the gun stayed pressed to Grian's head.
"Come closer. Hands in front of you. Don't try anything Silencer." The alien eyed Scar with distrust, a very valid thing to have when facing someone as infamous as the green eyed pirate. Scar forced an innocent smile as he stepped forward. With eyes still locked on Scar, the alien slowly moved the arm that held the gun to wrap around Grian's neck. With their free hand they lifted their comm to call for back up. A cocky move, and a foolish one. Scar's tail whipped around to wrap around the gun. The alien's hand dropped their comm and groped for something. Scar ripped the gun from their hand. A knife slipped free from the assailants belt. A fire echoed down the hallway. Grian screamed. Blood gushed over the floor.
Scar could only stare for a moment. The alien fell over, dead, a blast through the head just like it's friend. Scar's eyes weren't on that though. They were locked on the blood that gushed from Grian's stomach. The knife had sliced through his belly, and blood was staining the red sweater Grian loved so much. Neither Grian nor Scar moved for a second. Then the human began to teeter and Scar lept forward to catch his mate. The gun clattered to the floor, but Scar couldn't hear it over the blood in his ears. Panic filled every molecule of the brunette's being. Grian was pale, his hands trying and failing to stop the blood that flowed from the massive gash. Scar's fingers trembled as they hovered over the wound. He didn't have anything to stop the bleeding and had no clue how to see how deep the blade had cut. He knew who could though. He got to his feet, lifting Grian up bridal style and sprinted through the halls to the medical bay.
"Cub!" Scar called out with relief when he saw the smaller alien. The dark head of hair shot up from where he was prepping for injuries after the battle. If the victorious cry from Cleo meant anything, then Cub assumed they were winning and fighting the enemy back, not much surprise there. He just really wished his first patient didn't have to be them. Grian was placed on a cot while Scar collapsed onto the floor next to Grian, his leg finally giving out from the cut in his thigh. Cub knew Scar wouldn't even think of letting him see the cut till Grian was tended to. In Scar's defense, Grian definitely was the priority out of the two. Cub went to the medical door and barricaded it shut then crossed the room back over to Grian. He met Scar's eyes and without words he silently promised to save his mate.
♡☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆♡
Cub had to beg Scar to let him stitch up his thigh. Scar, being the idiot he was, insisted Cub tended to the others after Grian's surgery was complete. Jellie had reappeared during this time, she sat by her owner's side during the surgery. She sniffled and nosing at Grian once his surgery was complete, nuzzling his face sadly. Skizz and Impulse, came over afterwards, they had to physically hold Scar down so Cub could stitch him up. Jellie helped in this endeavor by dropping her head on top of Scar's, squishing his face into a pillow. That had led to a good few hours of him refusing to even acknowledge the three alien's, Jellie wouldn't allow him to ignore her. It was for his benefit and he knew it, so he forgave them. Now he sat by Grian's bed, holding his hand and watching him carefully. The monitors by his bed chirped away, giving some sort of reading that Scar didn't understand. The only thing he understood was that the chirping meant Grian was alive, his heart was beating, he was breathing. He was okay. So was the baby. He had hugged Cub and sobbed with relief when he had finished the surgery and told him they were both alive. He just now waited for Grian to wake.
Impulse brought him food while he was waiting, but he couldn't tell what meal of the day it was. He pushed it away. Impulse looked at him with concern which he very pointedly ignored. Impulse gaze drifted to Jellie who's tail swished with just as much anxiety as Scar's. Her leg was bandaged by Cub by now, and like the good kitty she was, she didn't lick the bandage. Impulse eventually gave up, leaving the food on the bedside table for Scar. The brunette never even acknowledged Impulse, he had to focus on being there for his mate. The lack of rest was getting to him though, the throbbing in his cheek and thigh feeling dull at this point. The door to the medical bay clicked shut and Scar's shoulders slumped, the tension releasing as his head tilted and his body slowly slid forward. He lay in a heap, looking up at his mate from his lap. His eyelids fluttered and his breathing evened out, syncing with the chirping of the monitors.
Scar was stirred awake by a movement. Fingers gently scratched at his scalp. He cracked an eye open in confusion and looked up. He followed the arm up to Grian's smiling face. The scientist looked tired, but his eyes were filled with nothing but love. The brunette felt a lump grow in his throat as he jolted up. He was at a loss for words, scrambling to pull his mate into his arms. A pained hiss escaped Grian from being pulled up so fast, but he covered it up with a laugh, hugging Scar back. The massive alien buried his nose into Grian's neck, breathing in deeply, his tail winding around Grian's wrist. Jellie was awoken as well by the commotion. Seeing Grian up she excitedly bound around the room before rushing over to plop her head into the scientist's lap with the widest grin.
"You scared the shit out of me." Scar grumbled out, his voice hoarse when he fianlly spoke. Grian smiled at him softly, turning his head to bury into the taller beings neck, reaching up to pet his hair. "Sorry about that, handsome. Anyway I can make it up to you?" Grian teased back, really trying to make light of the near death experience. Scar did not appreciate the joke whatsoever.
"I'm serious Grian! You could have-! The baby could have-!" Scar couldn't say it. One look at Grian told him he didn't have to. Those wonderful blue eyes fell, guilt filling them, his smile straining and faltering. Scar rushed to hold the human's face in his palms, making him look up at him. "Hey, I'm sorry, you did a great job. You did everything you could to protect yourself and the baby. I'm just worried."
Grian nuzzled into the palm, shutting his eyes and relaxing. Scar let out a deep breath, smiling back at the blonde. "You're gonna kill me early, you know that? My heart can only take so much." "Well I hope you live long enough to see our girl." Grian's eyes fluttered open again, snickering into the hand. Scar's heart lept, staring dreamly at the human. Without a second thought he pulled Grian in closer, kissing him.
The kiss was short and sweet, Grian's lips chasing Scar's when he pulled away. Grian jutted his lip out in a dramatic pout. Scar snorted and laughed, kissing Grian's head next. "I love you so much. And if you thought bed rest was bad before, it's just gotten so much worse. You won't be able to escape me." Scar gently poked Grian's cheek, phrasing his words to sound playful so that the moment was ruined by the terrifying hours that had come prior. Grian sighs, long and loud, his hands resting on his belly, resigned to his fate.
"I suppose if you must." Scar laughed again at Grian's show of dramatics. He hoped his mate would never lose their cocky light. He tilted forward till his head rested against the human's. "Oh I must, starlight."
Chuckling, Grian tilted his head up to slip a kiss onto Scar's temple. Then his gaze fell upon Jellie. His smile grew, seeing the excited beast. He opened his arms for a hug and Jellie slipped her head between Scar to nuzzle the human. Her purr was deep and content, her tail swaying with joy. Grian's laughter grew when she butted Scar fully out of the way to lick his face. His bangs stood up in a weird spike from the slobber and he had to clean his glasses because of the drool covering the lenses.
Cub peaked into the room from his office to watch the happy family. He smiled when he heard Scar's and Grian's laughter. He slowly slid his door shut, Grian's check up could wait a little while longer.
