Wh-what do you mean it’s from a birthday cake

Maryland will become the first US state to ban surveillance pricing in retail stores, after passing Protection from Predatory Pricing Act.
Jesus fucking christ that this exists in the first place
I WAS FUCKING WONDERING WHAT THOSE DIGITAL PRICE TAGS WERE ABOUT SUDDENLY i had hoped they were so the workers didn't have to finagle those little papers into the slider part anymore 😭
Hi, yes, that is the OFFICIAL excuse made to me by the guy replacing the paper tags with digital ones at my local Walmart, but the end goal is to remove the numbers off the shelf entirely, replacing them with QR codes that you have to scan with the app…. Which requires your login information….. and also stores your card information so even if you didn’t use your Walmart account at the physical checkout, if you used a card they recognize, they assign that purchase to your Walmart account purchase history.
I explained very clearly to the manager my issue with the meat section not having the price tags listed, and they claimed it was only going to be for the meat, since meat is by weight, and the price of each item is printed on the packs of each item.
Sure. That’s how they get their foot in the door. Fast forward not even two weeks, and here we are:
Bar codes. No prices, no item descriptions. No price stickers on the individual items. Heck, not even the name of the item that is SUPPOSED to be there.
No. The only way to see the price is to scan it on your phone app, which is also recording what you looked at recently, as a way of gauging what you might be looking for in the future.
So here’s what we’re gonna do gang:
Every time you go into a store that has implemented these price-less tags:
Take 1-3 items up to the cash register. Ask the cashier for the price, or hit the price check item on the self checkout, which will likely call over the attendant.
Express that you didn’t actually want it, you just couldn’t see on the shelf how much it was.
POLITELY, AND WITH A THANK YOU FOR THE PRICE CONFIRMATION, Give the items to the cashier or attendant to put back.
When they inevitably try to push the app, politely decline. If pressed for why not, say you don’t want to have to carry your phone in-hand the whole time you are shopping in order to see how much things cost. (Not having cell service or data to use the app is NOT a valid excuse, as stores already often have complimentary WiFi AND more stores will provide WiFi rather than give up on this push for surveillance pricing)
If it’s a shelf-stable item, the cashier will have to set it aside, taking up room in their limited operating space, and eventually pass it off to someone to put in a holding area to put back later. If it’s a fridge/freezer item, it might have to get tossed due to food product sale regulations.
In either case, you are making it a pain in the ass for them to have these digital bar codes. Tie up the checkouts. Give the employees more busywork that the company has to pay them to do. Hurt their bottom line having to toss the pint of ice cream you carried around in your cart for 20 minutes before giving it back to the cashier.
Yes, call your reps. Yes, push for more legislation like this in more places. But also take an extra minute out of your shopping trip to MAKE IT HURT for companies to pull this shit.
I've seen some people in the notes express (very fair) concern that this is only going to inconvenience already under-paid laborers, and not have any impact on corporate. While I can't speak for every company or every store, I do work in a grocery store and I can tell you this is precisely the kind of thing that would have an impact, especially if people are doing it en masse. Stores absolutely track their shrink numbers, and they do draw distinctions between what gets stolen, damaged, or wasted for other reasons. If people are making it clear that the reason they're bringing things to the cashier is that the prices are not adequately represented on the displays, and rather than improving business it's wasting product, slowing down transactions, and causing confusion and mistrust in customers, that is a language that shareholders speak.
I worked in retail for years. If this had happened while I was working retail, I would have been delighted and felt great solidarity with anyone who was wasting my employer's time and money and giving me busy work as an act of protest. In point of fact every moment the employee spends carting items back to the shelves is a moment not spent standing at a register.
here’s the closeted furries “hey man… can u bum me a cig” and “the one uncle nobody invites to the family reunion but SOMEONE keeps telling him where it is anyways”

“This recipe is perfect for weeknights—it only takes 30 minutes!” and and the first ingredient is an entire butternut squash cut into 1-inch cubes
just cut up a butternut squash into 1 inch cubes and timed it. It took 11 and a half minutes. Build that into your recipe times Or Else
Artemis I love the implication that you haven’t made the recipe for six months because you’ve been avoiding the squash
I mean. That’s not NOT what happened 😅
One thing that isn't discussed much is knife skills. I've worked in a couple kitchens doing prep and short order cooking, and cooked since I was a kid. I'm not a chef, but I can prep a butternut squash in 7-8 minutes, definitely under 10.
Which, like, good for me? But also thats not most people reading and using recipes!
I've watched most people use a kitchen knife and honestly it is physically painful. Most people have never been trained on how to properly hold a knife and the object being cut, and they certainly haven't had to cut entire prep trays of onions, peppers, etc. for restaurants.
Recipe writers need to learn how to take that into account. They need to add 50% of the time it takes them to do a recipe to come up with a time for an average home cook. Or they need to provide a range and divide out the prep time - professional, amatuer, home cook.
That said, if it's worth it to you - watch a couple videos on knife skills and practice cutting a lot of onions, celery, peppers, etc. The biggest things people do wrong? They either (a) don't use a full size knife because they are scared of it or find it clunky or (b) they use a full size knife but grip it too far back. It's counterintuitive, but your thumb and forefinger should be resting directly on the blade - "pinching" the blade - while the rest of your back 3 fingers control the handle.
To do this cheaply: Invest in *one* good, full size chef's knife (8-10") - starter chefs usually use Victorionox, which run about $50, don't chip, sharpen easily, and last for-bloody-ever. Get one of those $30 v-sharpeners and keep it sharp.
To practice? Make some big pots of soup or stew, maybe pasta sauce. Something that requires you to chop a lot of mirepoix (onion, celery, carrot) or holy trinity (onion, celery, bell peppers) and preferably potatoes (to get used to breaking down awkward shapes - squash work well here too). Rinse and repeat.
Shapes beyond our understanding.

Just fyi, all the shirts and hoodies you're stealing? I'm gonna fuck you in all of them.

some day “milf is a slur” discourse will break out and there will be no survivors
good news OP, quite a few people were upset that we called our yuri milf game a milf game, and were even further scandalized to learn it was for a “yuri” game jam because yuri is a bad word also now, too, for some reason
!!! @xekstrin you can’t just mention a yuri milf game and not gives us links to plug it!! I want to know!! I want to know about the yuri milfs!!!
It’s called Love On The Peacock Express you play as a cocky detective on a train full of milfs who have mysteries to solve
I didn’t know @tealesbian was a game developer
I was onboard for that until I learned that the game was funding baby-murder :(
this post really has everything huh

Video caption: Good guy who talks like a bad guy
“Perhaps you’d like to see my pets. They were ALL … rescues.”
“And as always, gentlemen, our profits will be … donated.”
“Oh, I wish I could stay and chat, but I’m afraid I have to take my friend to the airport.”
Redeemed villain who can’t let the speech pattern go
yet another cosmic unfairness: a manatee is some kind of big fat dumpling beast of the sea that wants you to pet it so bad we had to make laws against doing just that for their safety
jail time and a desire to see them thrive are the only things staying my tender heart and gentle hand
