Unlike Dirk or calliope, John wouldn’t control the narrative by controlling the characters. He would control via retcon, sort of like Maruki’s world in persona 5 royal - and sort of like Groundhog Day.

I just don’t know that he’s really had time to sort through his grief - for his dad, for the people from his original (pre-retcon) timeline… how do you go to therapy for that when the only one remotely qualified is someone you watched die in a wiped-over world that she doesn’t even remember? Eesh.

He acts out of love and out of a desire to protect everyone. He only ever thinks he wants the best for those around him. He thinks this is a selfless endeavor. At the same time, he holds himself at an arm’s length from everyone, too scared to properly get attached.

Dave, Rose, and Jade are probably the most emotionally hurt by this. Dave is reminded of his time loops, because he’s ever so slightly aware whenever something gets retconned. Only barely. It reminds him of the dead Daves. He hates it, but he shuts down and can’t bring himself to do much about it because he figures that, just like the loops, this is how it has to be.

Rose abhors it. Her vision is useless. She’ll see something coming, and then the next moment it will change to something completely different. She turns her back on John and can’t believe what he’s doing. She tries once to relate to Dave - to try and find a friend in this, as she too is aware of when things are changing, but his refusal to be pissed at John infuriates Rose, and they are tense with each other after that.

Jade is hurt to see John abusing his power like this. She has lost a lot through the game as well - not as many people, but she’s lost so much more of herself and has had to reinvent herself as the game has gone on. She understands that John wants people to be safe and happy, but she tries to convince him that it wouldn’t be better if the game had never happened - then she wouldn’t get to be with her friends, they wouldn’t get to all hang out, they would still be stuck on a world that was doomed. And she understands how lonely he must truly feel. She tries to relate to him and tries to talk John out of everything he’s doing, but it doesn’t work.

Sollux is the only one who’s actually fine with it. “It’s just like resetting if you flub a perfect run, right?”

Vriska is also pissed off, mostly because she sees John’s actions as weak and cowardly. She doesn’t get as much of a main role for a while, but with John’s retcon powers she basically gets to helltier in real time in the real world. Hooray for her, sorry for everyone else. Once she gets herself a bit more figured out, she chats a lot more with Terezi and decides that it’s time for an intervention.

Ultimately it’s Terezi (with the advice of Rose and the backing of Jade) who slaps some sense into John. She agreed with John at the start of all of this, and has been his one actual friend through all of this. But as time goes on, she sees how John is using retcons as an escape, just like she’s tried to escape her problems in the past. She, Terezi, Rose, Karkat, and Jade work together to try to talk some sense into John. When that doesn’t work (and gets retconned into never having happened), they decide to attack him head-on. When that doesn’t work (and they get retconned to never having gone to see John that day), they realize that the reason they can never manage to go talk to him must be because it doesn’t go well. They decide on an ambush. They freeze him in place and Karkat forces him to remain solid. They stop him from retconning anything and hold him there for about a month so he can see that the world won’t fall apart without his intervention.

You might be exploring each others understanding of touching and relating to it

The guy would definitely be making a fuss out of it, likely telling you how HUGGING is the worst crime of LEWDNESS against anyone in paradox space

Said "exploration" -for the most part- will be including just talking about this, as I see Caliborn being really cagey about it (I say as I look at the point before), so EVEN IF not telling you, he would want to take it slow EVEN if you are not romantically involved

Remember, Caliborn is a cherub - talking to you is a big deal already

Though he is entitled, he does not take interactions as granted if he let known to stay in lane
