Translating the Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney Fanbook! Article 15
Masterpost
So there's sadly no image with this one. I'm guessing they didn't have an art featuring Ema Skye available... As a consolation, Phoenix is kinda cute in this one
Trip
Ema, who dropped by the Wright & Co Law Offices for the first time in a while, immediately hit it off with Maya and Pearl, who she was meeting for the first time. Seeing how lively they were, Phoenix seemed a little uneasy?!Â
Ema: Uhm⊠Hello.Â
Maya: Ah. Come in! Youâre Ema, right?Â
Ema: Woah! Itâs Miss Fey! The real deal!Â
Maya: Well, no need to be so formal. Take a seat.Â
Pearl: Nice to meet you. Iâm Pearl Fey.Â
Ema: Kyah, so cute! I always watch your performances in the game!
Pearl: Oh, donât mention it. I still have a long way to go⊠Ah. Iâll go call Mr Nick right now!Â
Ema: M-Mr NickâŠ?Â
Maya: Huh? What do you call him, Ema?
Ema: I suppose âMr Wrightâ.
Maya: Ah, what a waste. Nick is plenty good enough.Â
Ema: Got it! Well, Nick it is, then!Â
Phoenix: No, no. I wish youâd stop going around saying whatever you want.Â
Maya: Ah, Nick. Emaâs here!Â
Ema: Long time no see, Nick!Â
Phoenix: âŠYouâve adapted quickly, EmaâŠÂ
Ema: You really helped me out a bunch with my sisterâs case!Â
Phoenix: The pleasure was all mine⊠What brings you here today?
Ema: Maya suggested we have a party to celebrate the release of Rise From The Ashes.Â
Phoenix: That sounds great! Well then, Iâll go buy a cake right awayâŠ
Maya: What are you talking about? Since we have this opportunity, letâs go on a trip! A trip!Â
Pearl: Woah. Thatâs so exciting! A trip!Â
Phoenix: Huh? No⊠Iâm actually kind of busy right now.
Maya: I wanna go to Europe! Europe, you hear?!Â
Phoenix: And now you mean overseas too?!Â
Maya: Well, if you talk about a vacation, Europe springs to mind, doesnât it?!Â
Pearl: As expected of you, Mystic Maya!Â
Ema: Ah. I thought something like this might happen, so I brought a world map with me.Â
Maya: Oh! As expected of you, Ema!Â
Phoenix: âŠYouâre seriousâŠ
Maya: So? So? Where in Europe should we go?
Ema: Uhm. Somewhere around here, maybe.
Maya: In that case⊠Whatâs the shortest route?Â
Pearl: Letâs think. I think the shortest route would be to head straight up from Japanifornia, and turn left around China.(1)
Maya: Ah! Speaking of China. I heard thereâs a delicious ramen shop somewhere there.Â
Pearl: Youâre as informed as ever, Mystic Maya!Â
Maya: Alright. Then how about we have lunch there?
Phoenix: âŠWhat a surreal plan.Â
Maya: What about you, Ema? Anywhere you want to go?
Ema: Ah. Actually I⊠would like to go to Las Vegas.Â
Phoenix: Huh? Because of the casinos?Â
Maya: Gambling, huh? Sounds fun. I think Iâd be good at it.
Ema: No, uh. Thereâs a famous forensic science team in Las Vegas.Â
Maya: I bet their lives are like something out of a TV drama.
Ema: Iâd like to go introduce myself, just incidentally.Â
Maya: We can splurge in the casinos on the way back. How much money do you have, Pearly?
Pearl: $6!
Maya: I have 50 cents. Since weâre at it, I might go and spend it all!Â
Ema: By the way, where do you want to go, Pearl?
Pearl: As for me⊠Thatâs right. How about Shikoku island?(2)
Phoenix: Thatâs a pretty big shift in scale. Â
Pearl: Uhm. It just caught my eye. Look, right there.
Ema: Ah⊠Thatâs⊠Australia.Â
Pearl: Australia? How is that related to ShikokuâŠÂ
Phoenix: Well⊠If you look close, I guess the shapes are similar.Â
Pearl: I-I thought it was weird too. I never expected to find Shikoku in a place like thatâŠÂ
Ema: Ah. While weâre at it, any requests from you, Nick?
Phoenix: Iâm busy at the moment. If itâs a wrap party, letâs do it in the officeâŠ
Maya: Okay. Why donât we hang the world map on the wall, and decide where to go by throwing darts.
Phoenix: âŠThat actually sounds kind of cool.
Maya: Here you go, Ema.
Ema: T-thatâs a lot of responsibility⊠Here goes!
Maya: Gyah!Â
Ema: Ah! It missed the map and landed right here on the wall!Â
Phoenix: Yep. Well, the destination is set.
Maya: Huh?
Phoenix: Iâll go and buy some cake. Weâll have fun tonight right here at the Wright & Co Law Offices.
Maya: No way, not that!Â
Notes:
(1) Yeah, yeah, I know this only makes sense in the Japan context. I frankly could not be bothered to put a whole localisation pass on this just for the logistics, though. (2) Shikoku is one of the main islands of Japan.
Maya telling Ema to call him 'Nick' is a little funnier in the Japanese context, which is very hierarchal and honorific based when it comes to speech. She effectively said 'this guy isn't worthy of keigo' which is A Tier. That said, Ema does continue to use the polite form of speech throughout this (and in later games - I checked). HOWEVER, the actual name she refers to him as is very casual.
