shane wakes in the night needing to pee. ilya is cuddling him from behind, one arm cushioning shane's neck and the other weighing down the dip of shane's waist, their legs criss-crossing and tangled in blankets. shane is loathe to move, but his bladder is full and insistent and he knows he won't be able to fall back asleep without dealing with it. so he begins the awful process of disentangling himself from ilya â unhooking an ankle from ilya's calf, removing a leg from between ilya's legs, lifting ilya's arm from his stomach. he does it all painstakingly slowly, not wanting to wake ilya, but his efforts prove futile. he's barely shifted away from ilya when he hears ilya inhale behind him, feels him stir.
sleepy hum, then, "shane?"
ilya's voice just woken up is like a dream. shane feels warm listening to it. the deep timbre of it. he finishes returning ilya's arm to him, though ilya seems unwilling to accept it, and looks over his shoulder as he does. in the dark he can make out only the broadest features of ilya's formâthe bulk of his torso and the indistinct smudge of his soft curls. shane reaches in that direction and caresses his head briefly.
"just gonna go to the bathroom."
ilya grunts and sighs in one go, unhappy. shane leaves the bed. he shuts the en-suite door behind him quickly, not wanting the light to spill out for too long. the bathroom is blinding and cold after the bed and ilya's arms; shane rushes through his business, eager to return to both. before he comes back out he shuts the light off through a crack in the door.
as he approaches the bed again the slightly deeper dark of ilya's sleeping form moves. shane discerns a hand reaching out to him.
"come here," ilya mumbles. he sounds like half his mouth is squashed against the pillow. shane smiles, unseen by anyone. he begins climbing back in next to ilya, ducking under his outstretched arm.
"did you wait up for me?" he asks, settling onto his side facing ilya and pulling the blankets back over his lower half. ilya's arm comes around him, palm against his shoulder blades, and brings him in. shane snakes his arms around ilya's middle.
"yes," ilya says. "you take longest pisses in the fucking world."
"shut up, i take normal pisses." shane says this into ilya's neck, where the skin is thin and warm, and his heartbeat bumps up against shane's lips. all shane has to do is purse his lips to kiss him. he does. "you thought it was long because you missed me."
"yes," ilya says simply. shane lets ilya feel his smile. ilya shimmies down the bed a little, so shane's head is tucked more snugly between his chin and his shoulder, then slings one of his legs over both of shane's like a massive koala. shane really hopes he won't need to pee again until morning. ilya kisses shane's hair in several different places, quick and affectionate. mwah, mwah, mwah. then he settles down with a sigh.
"comfortable?" he asks. his voice is all around shane. shane hums.
"very comfortable."
"sleep?"
"sleep," shane agrees.
they do.

- during their careers itâs just not happening. sorry. they would barely see that child. the domestic labor that straight-married professional athletes provide compared to their wives is a rounding error. multiplied by two? this hypothetical kid would be raised by grandparents and nannies. shane and eventually ilya will have spent enough time around hayden and jackie to understand all of this and know it isnât plausible.
- immediately after their careers end, theyâre definitely going to want a few years to themselves, and if they have the longevity that athletes of their caliber typically enjoy, that will put them into their 40s before theyâre even ready to consider their options.
- then it gets juicy.
i think ilya would be terrified of passing on his mental illness/dementia genes. even if he wasnât genetically involved, he would struggle with the prospect of parenting through depression, potentially perpetuating the cycle of abuse, and the possibility of developing dementia himself and generally being an older parent and aging during the kidâs young adulthood the way his father did when he was in his twenties.
i think #myocdshane (undiagnosed obv) would subconsciously know that having a kid would be torture for his anxieties. heâs already going on hourslong reddit research spirals if he notices the dog pooped a slightly different texture. a human baby? 23 hours per day screentime on webmd. absolutely not. shane in his 40s is also going to slowly be coming to terms with his lifelong weird-to-nonexistent relationship with personal autonomy. again, i think a lot of this is subconscious, but on some level he is going to be unsettled by the idea of his identity being subsumed by parenthood right when heâs just getting used to it not being subsumed by being ShaneHollanderHockeyPlayer
i think they waffle and pray on it quite a lot for a few years but then theyâre getting into the latter half of their 40s and neither of them is quite ready to take the plunge and one night they just look at each other and Know it isnât happening. and they both feel awful mostly because they really wanted shaneâs parents to have grandkids but they are at this point mature enough to know that that canât be the #1 reason to have children. crucially the fact that they are intellectually and emotionally intelligent enough to know all of this means that they would be great parents lol. but they arenât doin it

â Federal agents with Homeland Security Investigations tracked down Rochester, NY resident David Streever last month at his home. He was out of town, so they gave his wife a warning notice claiming that he had potentially violated the law when he wrote a harsh email months earlier to Todd Lyons, who stepped down as the acting director of ICE at the end of May.

They're threatening to arrest Streever because he wrote to Lyons' government email address on Jan. 26 after federal immigration officers in Minneapolis murdered two U.S. citizen observers during the immigration enforcement surge there.
The three-paragraph note compared Lyons to a Nazi and predicted that Lyons would be tormented by his own conscience.
The Trump administration has made it clear that our Freedom of Speech is under attack.
They have taken aggressive actions against student protesters, and political critics, including arresting journalists, and coercing media and universities into suppressing opposing viewpoints.
Now they are threatening our Freedom of Speech â the freedoms of private citizens like you and me.
And all of this is made much worse because of the spineless Republicans in control of Congress. Not only are they doing nothing to stop it, they are actually encouraging it. Republicans have handed their congressional power over to Trump. They do whatever he tells them to do.
It's one thing if we don't want to get involved in minor policies we don't agree with. But it's an entirely different thing to watch in real time as our Free Speech is being taken away, ...and then do nothing about it. We can't let that happen.
