1. ai witch hunt is harming genuine writers as much as ai does, if not more. you are harming genuine writers as much as ai does, if not more.

2. ai was trained to mimic human-made works. if you think a work “looks like it was created by ai”, please ask yourself what you think ai was trained on and what you think it was trained to mimic.

3. re: this post and this post. you can never know for sure if a work was written by ai (no, ai checker doesn’t work, the machine itself is ai and unreliable). you can only guess based on vibes. so yes, there’s always a chance of you wrongly accusing a genuine writer who doesn’t use ai to create their works.

4. this is the exact reason genuine writers no longer share their works and why more and more genuine writers take their human-made works down.

5. no matter what you claim, I believe this can be considered harassment if what you’re doing results in people getting harassed, which is against ao3’s terms of service — meaning people can still report you for this.

with all that said, I believe this isn’t how collections on ao3 work anymore (so if anything, there’s a chance this is just troll/ragebait, which is shitty regardless). here’s how ao3 collections actually work now.

This AI witch-hunt bullshit causes real and actual harm, guys. To people. Real people who write fanfic and post it for us for free. I’m gonna say it: I may hate AI and refuse to use it myself, but I would rather read an AI fic than engage in this AI hunting behavior.

In my RL work environment, I have a coworker who loves AI so much that her response to just about anything is “did you use AI for that?” As someone creative, I hate this and it offends me. But at least this woman is not being intentionally cruel when she asks—she isn’t accusing anyone of using AI or trying to catch someone in a lie or whatever else is happening in fandom, she just… Well. She’s not terribly creative herself.

AI was trained on fanfic. Also, some people do write obscenely fast; they may not have jobs, they may have insomnia, they may use speech-to-text, they might just be like one of my besties who regularly could churn out high quality 50k in one week during NaNo so used to make higher word count targets for herself.

Idk what else to say, but I hate the idea of ANYONE being made to feel so bad that they delete their work or hide it or worse, stop writing or sharing. I’m so mad about this that frankly? I’m about to ready to start supporting AI use in fanfic because the alternative is this kind of cruel and mean and malicious insanity. The only thing it does is hurt actual human people. AI itself and the AI companies don’t give a rat’s ass.

So if you’re tempted to accuse someone is using AI for fanfic or is you read a fic and think “is this AI?” ask yourself this: why does it matter? (Do not come in here to tell me all the ways AI sucks and hurts the planet, I know.) What purpose would it serve to ask or comment or accuse the author of using AI? How would you feel if someone did that to you?

But Sara, what can I do, then? The back button is right there. Close the tab. Don’t read the fucking fic or other fics by that author. “Oh but all their fics sound the same-” Yeah. Because people have distinct voices and writing styles.

All I can say, is please, for the love of god, make this the worst decision they've made thus far. Do not watch AI movies, watch real humans with real passion and real hate and real love telling real stories.

sometimes I’m reminded that there are still people who don’t know ao3 was literally created by incest shippers — and the site’s sole purpose is to 1. be completely against censorship and 2. host all kinds of dark, taboo fics that are banned on other platforms — and the first ever fic that was posted on ao3 was a fic about an incest ship from supernatural.

you are in the house that was created by freaks. for freaks (affectionate). every disgusting thing you can think of is rightfully allowed and welcomed on ao3, because they are exactly the reasons why ao3 was created in the first place.

ao3 was created because its creators got tired of censorship, they got tired of dark and taboo fics getting banned on pro-censorship platforms, and they wanted a place that was safe for ALL FICS THAT WERE DARK AND TABOO.

ao3’s main principle is being against censorship and being proship / profic.

there are some things in fiction that make me uncomfortable, but instead of shaming people who are just minding their own business and not harming anyone in real life, I choose to curate my own internet experience by blocking/muting what I don’t want to see. ao3 has excellent tagging system, so instead of being a bitch, use their tagging system properly and you won’t see the things you don’t want to see.

it’s your job to curate what you see. it’s not other people’s jobs or responsibilities to censor themselves for your personal comfort. the world does not revolve around you.

also you cannot censor “only the things you personally hate” without expecting everything else, that isn’t of conservative beliefs, to be censored too. because censorship is a slippery slope and a fascist tool. I promise you there are people who think “why do tags for queer love even exist on ao3? they’re grooming children”.

if you allow the things that you hate to be censored — because someone with enough power gets to control what other people can and cannot create/consume, it will not stop at the things that you hate.

So, in terrible news, Trump's trying to pull some strings to pass this massive internet censorship bill, featuring all the kinds of internet censorship we're terrified of, including mandatory ID for accessing basically any website, specifically to crush state regulation of AI, because apparently this man will always see the moral bottom of the barrel and start digging.
