The bubble is nigh.
The KIDS act (which contains KOSA) passed the US house, so I would recommend calling your senators and telling them to vote in opposition. I don't think I need to stress the importance of being able to use the internet freely and without privacy barriers being breached.
There are many scripts online you can follow, many ways to tweak your message to fit your senator (ESPECIALLY if they are up for reelection this year). Whether it's a recording you reach or a real person, be straightforward, don't argue, just let your rep know that you are a constituent and you oppose the KIDS act, etc.
Here is where you can search for your senator... call, email, fax, bring them physical letters, show up in person to their offices if you are able.
The KIDS Act, ostensibly aimed at protecting children, will raise the risk for journalists, dissidents, and whistleblowers.
Contact your representatives, US folx. Yes, even if you're scared. Yes, even if you think it doesn't matter, even if you think they won't listen. Write an email if you can't make a call. Call after hours and leave a message. Call during office hours if you feel up to it, but do something. Call every day. Email every day. Fucking bother your rep. They work for you, not the other way around.
Your single call is not the point. The point is the aggregate of calls and emails. The point is that even "safe" Republicans don't feel really safe right now. The point is that "safe" Democrats are feeling pressure from the left due to the success of DSA candidates. You think they won't listen, and they'll probably try to make you think they're not, but they do, in the aggregate. The midterms have them running scared right now, and now is the time to shut this shit down.
Yes, again. Sorry it's not over. The people who really, really want to criminalize dissent are going to make us keep fighting this one. Sorry about that, but keep fighting.

UNPOPULAR OPINION: A lot of "mental health issues" disappear when bills are paid, rent is secure, and the fridge is full. Peace is expensive. And pretending money doesn't affect mental health is privilege.
donât know who needs to hear this but ao3 is not a social media. itâs an archive. a library. please stop treating it like twitter or tiktok
who is treating it like twitter or tiktok?
people need to include examples with posts that claim these sorts of things honestly because seventy five percent of the reblogged tags are people going 'glad I don't know anyone who does this' 'i hope I never see this' 'how are they using it like socmed?' or 'literally awful, I've never seen this but people need to stop doing it.' and the other twenty five percent are complaining about users posting legitimate fan works that they Just Don't Like being on the archive. Yes, you can include art; Yes, you can include headcanons; Yes, you can include drabbles. You can even (get this) include video if it's a fanwork. It is good etiquette to condense shorter works down into one fic, but that's a spam issue, not an inappropriate content issue. The only legitimate thing I saw was ONE user going 'people should stop creating fics just for a hiatus notice' and that took me a few minutes of scrolling to find. This doesn't exist!!! And if it does, not to a serious enough level where any of us know about it!!!! Include examples or die by my sword
Ok, here are some examples of people treating AO3 like social media or like it has an algorithm (violating the TOS in some cases, just being deeply annoying in others).
Continually updating the date on their work so it gets pushed to the top of the tag, without actually making updates. Not against the TOS, just HORRIBLE behaviour, absolutely rude as fuck, I will mute people who do this with zero hesitation. Everyone gets their turn at the top of the page, you aren't special. (Caveat: people whose work was in an unrevealed/anon collection, like for an exchange or event, get one free redate in my opinion, once their name is attached or the work is revealed. Otherwise stop redating your work to try and get more people to see it.)
Tagging "for reach" rather than based on the content of the work. Stop grabbing every single fandom that might be vaguely related (e.g. if you're writing Dracula fic, don't tag every single fandom with vampires in it). Don't tag your RPF as the FPF fandom too, "so more people will see it." (We will see it, and we'll mute you.) Stop tagging in the main character/relationship fields for characters who appear in one paragraph and never speak, or for relationships that are just implied in the background (use the Additional tags field for those if you want.) Tagging actively wrong fandoms is against the TOS and reportable, tagging inaccurate rels, characters, or additional tags is not against the TOS but just asshole behaviour.
Creating placeholder posts. "Story coming soon!" - go away, I'm muting you, I will never see your story. Against the TOS, reportable.
Treating the Archive like a personal journal, making updates just to complain about how mean people are being to you, or how you can't update this week because you're sick, or just repeating your fave ship name 1000 times or whatever. Put it on tiktok , tumblr, bluesky, whatever. Put a link to your social media in your profile or author's note. Non-fanworks are against the TOS.
Acting like it's weird to comment on older works. It's an archive. It's there to preserve fanworks for as long as possible. Those works are there for you to read. You can comment on them even if they're 10, 15, 50 years old. It's fine. If the author didn't want comments, they can disable comments. If they have comments turned on, assume they want you to comment.
Complaining that they want AO3 to recommend similar works to them based on their reading habits/preferences. No, you don't want this. You do not want AO3 to track your reading and push works it thinks might be similar to you, not least because good lord what a terrible idea. AO3 also doesn't want this, because it doesn't want to collect that information about you, because information it doesn't collect is information that can never be leaked or stolen. Learn how to search or perish.
Asking for a downvote button. Again, it's not social media, this isn't reddit, you don't need to downvote a fic you don't like, you can just backbutton away. There's no algorithm so you would just be using it to be a dick to the person who posted that work.
Also, don't combine your shorter works into one big work, this is also deeply annoying. It prevents people from finding works accurately, because if they're searching for a work over 5k and instead they find your collection of 50 drabbles posted as chapters of one big work, that's worse than useless to them. If your hugeass one drabble-per-chapter work has one chapter with the tag I want, I'm not going to sift through to find which chapter it is. Just post your works as individual works if they're actually individual works, no matter how short.

The one where Shane and Ilya run into Shaneâs high school ex-girlfriend and Ilya gets really weird about it.
words: 15.7k
tw: sexual content
note: jealous Ilya does something to me. This fic has no right to make me giggle like I did đđŤśđť

I didnât go missing, David. The FBI knew where I was the entire time.
insane to me how, to some people, this is not a common sense

thinking abt shane enjoying being A Boyfriend to ilyaâŚâŚ..he is stocking the fridge with cokes.âŚwhen ilya doesnât wear his jacket even though itâs canada in winter, i donât care that youâre russian, and then is shivering while insisting heâs not actually cold, shane is rolling his eyes but taking off his jacket to drape around ilyaâs shouldersâŚâŚ.when he has to brake suddenly bc a squirrel ran in the road his hand is flying out across ilyaâs chest to make sure heâs okay in the passenger seatâŚâŚâŚ..theyâve never been out to eat in public together before but when they finally get to, shane pulls ilyaâs chair out for him
my controversial hollanov take is that the two of them retire at exactly the same time. none of that ilya retires first to take care of the kids bs no sir. they retire at the same time. because both of them are just not interested in playing without the other to push them and the thought of doing long distance for even a week makes them start shaking crying screaming staring into the distance.
Dinner and a Movie
âWasnât this a good idea?â Shane asks as they sit sipping Mai Thais on the beach. Itâs nearing the end of a beautiful sunny day. The deep yellows and vibrant oranges of the sunset already darkening the sky. There are a few couples scattered along on the beach. Spread out down the coast with the occasional raised voice or giggle that floats over like butterflies circling their little oasis of contentment.
The sand is soft beneath their feet and the ocean is a gorgeous deep blue that merges with the sky. The waves crash against the sand aggressively, signaling the change in tides. They went swimming earlier, splashing and dunking each other. They waded out until they were treading water, laughing as they competed to see who could go for longer. They jumped waves and dragged each other under, sputtering the salty water from their mouths.
Ilya lounges beside him. Heâs already a delicious shade of coco brown. Although Shane will need to reapply their sunscreen soon. Despite the setting sun, he doesnât want Ilya to burn like when they were on their honeymoon and Shane had to figure out how to find aloe vera in the pharmacies in Ibiza to make sure Ilya could sleep that night.
âMmm,â Ilya agrees. He sounds like heâs already half asleep, but when Shane speaks, he shuffles around on the Turkish towels Shane brought so they donât have to worry about sand getting everywhere.
âMuch better than sitting around cold Ottawa,â Shane mutters as he turns onto his stomach so he can see Ilyaâs face. Ilya looks beautiful all the time, but thereâs something about the way he relaxes when itâs just the two of them that Shane really appreciates.
There is a state Ilya slips into when itâs just them. Ilya always talks about how Shane relaxes when they are at the cottage, but Ilya gets the same way too. Like pulling on an old, comfortable sweatshirt and snuggling down into the familiarity.
When itâs just the two of them, Ilya is softer, more affectionate. Heâs always touching Shane; a hand on his knee, a kiss to his cheek, an ankle hooked around his. He kisses Shane on the cheek, on the lips, on the crown of his head, on his knees. He wraps himself around Shane, showing his adoration, his love as prominently as a smile on his face. While in public, Shane thinks he tones it down for him, afraid Shane will pull away with too much PDA.
Shane props himself up on his elbows and Ilya turns to look at him. Even through his sunglasses, Shane can feel the hot brand of his gaze.
âMuch better.â

*gently takes your face in my hands* hey. remember that fandom is for fun. if you're not having fun it is ok to step back. if you're intentionally making it unfun for others it is ok to step back. none of this is real. go sit in the sun and smell a flower. i love you.
It's not the liberals, the gays, the socialists, or the drag queens that are brainwashing our children.

hey, ao3 user i_hate_ai_fic
1. ai witch hunt is harming genuine writers as much as ai does, if not more. you are harming genuine writers as much as ai does, if not more.
2. ai was trained to mimic human-made works. if you think a work âlooks like it was created by aiâ, please ask yourself what you think ai was trained on and what you think it was trained to mimic.
3. re: this post and this post. you can never know for sure if a work was written by ai (no, ai checker doesnât work, the machine itself is ai and unreliable). you can only guess based on vibes. so yes, thereâs always a chance of you wrongly accusing a genuine writer who doesnât use ai to create their works.
4. this is the exact reason genuine writers no longer share their works and why more and more genuine writers take their human-made works down.
5. no matter what you claim, I believe this can be considered harassment if what youâre doing results in people getting harassed, which is against ao3âs terms of service â meaning people can still report you for this.
with all that said, I believe this isnât how collections on ao3 work anymore (so if anything, thereâs a chance this is just troll/ragebait, which is shitty regardless). hereâs how ao3 collections actually work now.
edit: apparently this is how they bypass ao3âs system
if you can, please make sure to give love, kudos, nice comments and support to works under this personâs bookmarks here.
also hereâs what ao3 says about ai-generated works on their platform.
This specific person and this specific bullshit AI witch-hunt campaign is directly responsible for the wave of amazing, incredible, talented authors who flat out deleted their profiles and their fics or hid fics in their own private collections or flat out stopped writing. For those not in HR fandom spaces, this happened about a month ago: a sudden rash of fics and authors vanishing seemingly overnight. Some did this because they were targeted and attacked and harassed, and some did it in solidarity for those who were suffering.
This AI witch-hunt bullshit causes real and actual harm, guys. To people. Real people who write fanfic and post it for us for free. Iâm gonna say it: I may hate AI and refuse to use it myself, but I would rather read an AI fic than engage in this AI hunting behavior.
In my RL work environment, I have a coworker who loves AI so much that her response to just about anything is âdid you use AI for that?â As someone creative, I hate this and it offends me. But at least this woman is not being intentionally cruel when she asksâshe isnât accusing anyone of using AI or trying to catch someone in a lie or whatever else is happening in fandom, she just⌠Well. Sheâs not terribly creative herself.
AI was trained on fanfic. Also, some people do write obscenely fast; they may not have jobs, they may have insomnia, they may use speech-to-text, they might just be like one of my besties who regularly could churn out high quality 50k in one week during NaNo so used to make higher word count targets for herself.
Idk what else to say, but I hate the idea of ANYONE being made to feel so bad that they delete their work or hide it or worse, stop writing or sharing. Iâm so mad about this that frankly? Iâm about to ready to start supporting AI use in fanfic because the alternative is this kind of cruel and mean and malicious insanity. The only thing it does is hurt actual human people. AI itself and the AI companies donât give a ratâs ass.
So if youâre tempted to accuse someone is using AI for fanfic or is you read a fic and think âis this AI?â ask yourself this: why does it matter? (Do not come in here to tell me all the ways AI sucks and hurts the planet, I know.) What purpose would it serve to ask or comment or accuse the author of using AI? How would you feel if someone did that to you?
But Sara, what can I do, then? The back button is right there. Close the tab. Donât read the fucking fic or other fics by that author. âOh but all their fics sound the same-â Yeah. Because people have distinct voices and writing styles.
Be kind to others and donât be a dick. Why is that so goddamn hard for people????
I host at a NPR radio station-- please look at the story I just had to run
Google just invested 75 million dollars in a partnership with A24... for AI film making.
Are you fucking kidding me?
All I can say, is please, for the love of god, make this the worst decision they've made thus far. Do not watch AI movies, watch real humans with real passion and real hate and real love telling real stories.
What is Earth without art??? Just a rock floating in space.
I believe in humanities ability to choose beauty over convenience.
