Eddie wakes up in the rumpled remnants of his nest feeling like a full-body bruise, a bone-deep sense of wrongness aching behind his teeth.
The light beaming around the outer edge of the blinds tells him it’s sometime in the early afternoon and the stale smell of sweat and slick in the air reminds him it’s day three of this misery with no relief in sight. His skin is hot and tight, the muscles in his back and thighs bunched with tension, all underscored by the primal, omega instinct pacing unhappily in the back of his mind, howling in displeasure.
Alpha, it begs—has been begging, a never-ending wail. Alpha, alpha, please, where, need it, need you, please, and the last of Eddie’s resolve crumbles away.
Mind made up, he flops a hand clumsily around the edges of his nest until his fingers bump into something rectangular, unearthing his phone from the tangle of fabric. Buck’s contact is pinned to the top of his favorites—Eddie puts the call on speaker and sags back against his pillow.
Buck answers on the second ring.
“Hey, Eddie, I was just about to text you,” he says, cheerful, and some of the tightness between Eddie’s shoulder blades eases immediately at the sound of his voice. There’s a buzz of noise in the background, the scattered sounds of people talking and the squeaky rattle of a shopping cart. “Do you need anything from Trader Joe’s? I was thinking about dropping off some food later if you’re feeling up to eating—”
“Buck,” Eddie cuts in hoarsely.
Buck halts mid-syllable, and when he speaks again his tone has changed completely.
“What’s wrong?” he demands. “Are you okay?”
“Hot,” Eddie says. His vocal chords feel rusted over, his mind sweltering with heat-fog. “Hurts. Won’t stop hurting. It’s been…” He trails off, searching for the right words. He settles on, “Bad.”
“Okay,” Buck says. He sounds worried, which is kind of nice in a weird sort of way. “Bad, like, you need me to help you shower and— and fluff up your pillows? Or bad, like, I should call an ambulance and meet you at the ER?”
There’s the muffled sound of Buck speaking to someone on his side of the line: Hi, I’m so sorry, there’s been an emergency. Would you mind…? Thanks.
“Eddie?” Buck prompts. “What do you need?”
It slips out before he can think to hedge or minimize.
“You. Need you. Need my…” Eddie swallows hard. “Can you come home? Please?”
“I’m on my way,” Buck promises. “I’m leaving right now, okay? Do you want me to stay on the phone with you?”
Yes, Eddie thinks. “No, it’s— I’m okay. Just… hurry.”
Buck swears under his breath. “Twenty minutes.”
00000
Eddie’s tossed and turned through countless positions by the time the front door slams open.
“Eddie?” Buck’s voice calls, accompanied by the sound of footsteps hurrying down the hall. “Eddie, you back here?”
“Where else?” Eddie groans.
He lifts his head just in time for Buck to come barreling into his bedroom. He takes one look at him and his entire face scrunches in concern.
He steps forward, then hesitates—tripping over his own feet a little as he lingers at the edge of Eddie’s nest. “Can I…?”
Eddie throws open an arm, patting the empty, Buck-sized space next to him. “Come here. Please.”
Buck kicks off his sneakers and jeans, peels out of his overshirt, crawls into bed, and immediately gathers Eddie into his arms. The ache behind his eyes all but vanishes at the first whiff of Buck’s toasted-sunshine scent, and Eddie buries his face in the curve of Buck’s neck, snaking his arms around his middle.
“Thanks for taking off your outside clothes first,” Eddie says against his throat.
“It’s almost like I know you or something,” Buck teases, but his obvious worry has it landing a little flat. “Talk to me, Eddie. What’s going on?”
“My stupid fucking hormones are freaking the fuck out,” he huffs. “What else is fucking new?”
“You’re burning up,” Buck says, brow furrowed, sweeping a few sweaty strands of hair out of Eddie’s face. “When’s the last time you had a lull?”
“Don’t think I’ve actually had one yet,” Eddie admits. It’s easier to piece his thoughts together now that Buck’s here, shoring him up. “It— It’s not coming and going in waves like it usually does. It just keeps building and getting worse.”
“Eddie,” Buck says. “You— I know you know that’s not normal. Or healthy.”
“Yeah, no shit,” Eddie replies, but there’s no force behind it. He sinks further into Buck’s chest, his limbs heavy with exhaustion.
“Have you not been, uh… taking care of things?”
“I’ve been trying,” Eddie grumps, “but it’s like…”
He pauses, not sure how to describe the relentless ache that’s burrowed into his bones, the itch beneath his skin that refuses to be soothed.
“It’s like no matter what I do, I can’t get there. Well, I can get there,” he clarifies, and maybe if he weren’t so wrung out he’d find the energy to be embarrassed, but honestly, there’s not really any such thing as oversharing when it comes to Buck. “But it’s still not… Not really, uh…”
“Getting the job done?” Buck offers carefully.
“That.”
“Okay,” he says, seemingly taking the information in stride. “What do you need? How can I help?”
“This is already helping,” Eddie tells him, nuzzling closer, that feral thing in his chest all but basking in Buck’s scent and touch and presence. “Fucking alpha pheromones.”
“I’m, uh, glad to hear it,” Buck says, his fingers trailing up the knobs of his spine before a warm palm settles over the nape of his neck. “Y-you’re more than welcome to them. Obviously.”
“Obviously,” Eddie repeats, sucking in another huge lungful of honey-cinnamon-sunshine-perfect.
“When’s the last time you ate, bud? Or had something to drink?”
“‘M not hungry.”
“Okay,” Buck acquiesces easily. Too easily. Eddie peels one eye open to squint up at him suspiciously. “We’ll circle back to food. You feeling up to a shower?”

it is honestly amazing how much of writing and editing is just. logistics. like... do i use a name here or a pronoun? if i move this dialogue tag to the middle of this line and break it in half, does the end of the line hit harder that way? what if i move the tag to the front? what if i remove it entirely? ...wait, whose point of view am i in; can i reasonably say this character is appalled, or must i say they look or seem or sound appalled? is this a deliberate action or a step-removed one; is her hand closing on his shoulder, or is she closing her hand on his shoulder? environment environment environment, we need to break all this dialogue up with some narration, the scene is coming untethered. what! are! they doing! with! the rest of their bodies that are not hands! fuck fuck fuck FUCK i forgot we covered this two chapters ago and now i either need to cut this whole chunk or find a reason to reprise the conversation from earlier. name or pronoun? name or pronoun? name or pronoun? move this clause around in this sentence? oh i'll add this phrase-- nope, never mind, past!me added the same phrase two lines down. okay, if i add too much environmental narration it's going to take away from this bit, but not enough and it won't feel grounded. what if i move this to its own line? where the FUCK are their hands?
There’s a quality that certain books/movies/TV shows have that leads me to say, “Yeah, I can see people making fanfiction of that.” It’s something to do, I think, with how tight the story is, how much feels open-ended or like it could be elaborated on.
Something like Breaking Bad, for example, has low squiggability (that’s what I’m calling this quality). It’s tightly written, the characters are consistent, there’s little left to interpolate or extrapolate. Obviously, people DO write fanfic of Breaking Bad, but it still has a low squiggability score. Whereas something like Supernatural has a high squiggability score. Fantasy and science fiction often have high squiggability scores. This suggests squiggability could also be related to worldbuilding and potential for people to borrow a premise or setting.
And sometimes you’ll read or watch something and you’ll say, “Ah, low squiggability,” and then you’ll open tumblr and find out that everyone else seem to think its squiggability was very high indeed.
Then there will be shows that you'll be like the squiggability is off the charts on this one imma go look at what everyones cooking' and find crickets. Its like the dichotomomy of squiggability you know.

i know i say this often but i cannot say it loud enough: people who comment on fics, people who reblog posts and engage with fanworks are the people who generate community and without them fandom would be nowhere, so truly thank you for your presence, you make the world go 'round <3
