farther from the path

“Sex -- and if you get me a drink too, that’s what I call a perfect date.”

Rani tightly pursed her lips, waiting for the girl too at last say when. And just as she prepared to change her mind, she felt her blistering wrist grate against the metal as she pulled it free. Rani was hit with another shock of pain, both from her wrist being pressed against the iron, and also her than being freed from the small gap. Immediately, she cradled her aching wrist close to her chest. The skin still felt raw and tender. And while it would heal…she wouldn’t be surprised if it left a rather noticeable scar.

“…Thank you. But next time – couldn’t you at least give me a warning?”

“I could.”  Willa shrugged.  “But it’ll still hurt either way.  Might as well just get it over with, without knowing it’s coming.”  If it was something you could prepare for, something you could avoid by being ready for it, then that was one thing, but when it was something that would be the same no matter what, what was the point?  Although really, in this case, it didn’t matter at all, because there wouldn’t be a next time, not if Willa had anything to say about it.  She was not friendly, or helpful, and she refused to make a habit out of this for some stranger who had made her feel weak.  She had already paid her back.  She was done.

“But next time, I’ll just leave you here.  You can figure a way out on your own.”  

Not one time, but two now, had Carmilla asked Willa to be her plus one at one of these events, the kind that she as well did not enjoy other than the vast amounts of pretty women and some proper alcohol being in place. And yes, she did enjoy showing off her own beauty, the countess had nothing against stealing some looks, especially from the female attendees. Still, it would be more entertaining had she had her little wolf girl with her, already imagining all the snarky remarks about one or the other guests as well as some skinship to show her girl off. That was the kind of thing Carmilla was into, she liked feeling superior in that sense, as childish as that was. The more was the surprise on her stark features as she set sight on the gorgeous woman simply walking in, clothes so snugly fit to her figure and face painted like she had never seen it before. It was like that wild girl had embraced her womanhood for the night. Obviously Carmilla came over, but surely not without grabbing them both a drink first, wine glass in each hand she at last set them down before the other, arm instinctively slipping around that slim waist. “Do I happen to know you, sweetness. I am certain we met before.” The countess teased, pushing one of the glasses toward Willa.

Willa grinned when she saw Carmilla walking towards her, and at that look in her eyes.  She was not surprised it had taken so little time, only pleased to see that it had worked.  She still thought these sorts of events were intolerable, but the vampire looked great, better than usual when she was all dressed up, and that, she supposed, was worth being here, at least for a little while.  With both of them looking as good as they did tonight, she was confident they would not be staying for very long.  Just long enough to make everyone else jealous of them both. 

“Mm, I’m not sure,” Willa returned, tilting her head teasingly, a smirk on her lips.  “I’m sure you would remember if we had.  I’m not the type women tend to forget.”  She accepted the glass, keeping her eyes on her as she took a sip.  “But I’ll give you the chance to jog your memory, since you brought me this drink.”  Frankly, she needed some alcohol to be able to get through this thing without fighting someone.

“oh, dear. i’m quaking.” she deadpanned, snorting. “don’t worry. i wasn’t planning on touching anything anyway.”

“Great.  So why are you still here, then?”

“and trust me when i say i’m far too used to getting away from predatory species such as your own. claws don’t scare me.”

“You’ve never tried from me.  I’m not just my species.”

“i’ve got enough adventure without being pulled into your tomfoolery, thank you. have you considered that you’re well and truly bored without me as your audience?”

She laughed.  “Please.  I have plenty of ways to entertain myself that have nothing to do with you.  If I needed an audience, I would learn to sing.”

“see, that’s funny for two reasons. the first being that i don’t take orders, and the second being that i don’t see your name on it.”

“Yeah, that’s cause it’s a lot more fun to defend what’s mine with my claws -- but I thought it would be nice of me to give you a warning first.”

“why is it that we land in terribly hot water every time we meet? do you ever go a day without being backed into a corner?” snow snorts. “although - i am certainly no better. i’d say you should be berating me, but you do that enough.”

“What would be the fun in that?  Don’t lie -- you love it.  Otherwise you would do a better job staying away from me.”

“I’m not lying.”

“Right.  You can say whatever you want, but you can’t fool a thief.”

"I'm telling you - the guy was a complete stranger, just walked up and gave me the bag."
