Warren shook his head as she offered to clean and pay for things, shutting her down immediately. âI have people who do the cleaning, and I have plenty of money to take care of whatever you need.â He explained, saying nothing more. He wasnât keeping her so that she could scrub the floors or help pay for groceries. This wasnât why he had brought her here. To be honest, though, he hadnât figured out what he planned to do with her just yet. He justified her being here by saying it would be payment for her brotherâs protection, a life for a life. Besides, he could find something for her to do eventually. âRight now the only things you do are go to work, come back, and stay out of the way until I say otherwise.â He said nothing more.
He cocked an eyebrow at her little statement, a smug smirk resting on his lips. He stood and walked closer to her, placing a finger under her chin, guiding her eyes to his face. âThis is distracting, princess?â He questioned, gesturing to his chiseled chest and abs. He backed off, his smug expression staying in place. He ignored her request for him to put on a shirt got ready to give her the tour she asked for. He had to make sure she knew where she was and wasnât allowed to go, so he figured it would be best to get it out of the way now, besides it was getting kind of late and after such a long day he was ready to shower and get into his bed. He nodded his head in the direction of the hallway as if to tell her to follow him.
He pointed in the direction of a few rooms. âBathroom, laundry room,â He passed a few without saying a word. âDonât bother with those, theyâre locked.â Finally, he came to the big room at the end of the hall. âThis is my room. Itâs off limits. I find out youâve been in here without my permission and your brother is dead meat.â He explained bluntly. He then gestured to the room adjacent âThis room can be yours, I guess.â He nudged the door open with the toe of his shoes, revealing the canopy bed and fireplace. He hadnât really put much thought into where she would be staying since he had only found out he would be keeping her a few hours before, but he knew he wanted to keep her close, somewhere he could keep an eye on her. This room would do. It wasnât up for negotiation.
Clara was about to ask Warren about her friends - couldnât she still go out with her friends, as long as she came back after? Â They were bound to get suspicious if she kept blowing them off since that wasnât like her at all. Â But then she remembered the blood on his shirt and she quickly forced the thought from her mind. Â Sheâd bring it up another time, maybe.
The way he touched her, forcing her to look at him, stirred something in Clara that she was trying her best to deny was there. Â She could not be attracted to him. Â Not only was she literally his prisoner, he was a known criminal. Â A gang leader. Â A killer, probably. Â And she was a pre-school teacher who rocked a lot of polka dots and spent a lot of time around glitter. Â She was meant to be with someone boring, like another teacher or a librarian. Â She couldnât have feelings for Warren. Â Mr. Archer, she told herself. Â Just call him Mr. Archer. Â Donât personalize it.
âDo you have someone who cooks, too?â she asked as they passed the kitchen. Â âIâm absolutely awful at cooking. Â I once left a pot of water on the stove and it all evaporated and I ruined the pan. Â Iâve set toast on fire more times than Iâm willing to say because itâs an embarrassingly huge number.â Â Why the fuck was she telling him this? Â Why couldnât she shut up? Â She shouldâve just asked about a chef and left it at that.
Walking through the house, she peered at the locked doors. Â She couldnât help but wonder what was in those rooms. Â Bodies? Â A secret collection of Beanie Babies? Â Both? Â When they got to his room she wanted to peak inside. Â What could a gang leaderâs room possibly look like? Â Maybe he had the head of people he killed mounted on the walls, like hunters did with deer. Â God, thatâd be fucked up. Â She was suddenly glad she couldnât see inside. Â She didnât really want to know.
Warren opened the door to the room that was to be hers and she braced herself for something awful. Â She figured itâd be small and sparse and ugly and maybe have some weird torture equipment in the corner and locks that could only be opened from the outside so sheâd be trapped in the tiny room for hours. Â But it was nicer than her room at home. Â Bigger, too. Â âIâve been in the wrong profession my whole life,â she said, stepping inside. Â The bed and the furniture were beautiful. Â There was more closet space in the room than in her entire house. Â âYou just had this all ready to go? Â Who sleeps here? Â Women you take home?â Â Fuck, she was babbling again. Â Shut up, Clara! Â âSorry. Â Iâm just nervous. Â Transitions can be scary, am I right?â Â She forced a laugh. Â âGod, Iâm sorry. Â Iâll shut up.â
