How does the yellow belt thing that you wear with pampers work? I get that it extends the tapes, but I don't know how. Is there somewhere I could buy one?
Hey! Sorry for the delay in responding to this ask, but I really wanted to make a more involved post than just answering your questions. I figured the best way to show you would be to take some pictures of it during a change, so you can really see how they work! (Also cause I was reasonably sure my bladder would be empty so I could be un-diapered long enough to take some pics without sprinkling all over the place, hehe).
How They Work
After taking off my old diaper and wiping down, I lay the new one and the extender face-down. The inside of the extender had a strip of velcro which sticks to the front of the diaper, and two snaps on either end which snap shut to help keep everything in place.
Then I put the top of the diaper against the velcro, push down hard so it sticks, then snap the snaps shut.
After that I attach the straps to the tabs of the diaper. The straps also have velcro on them so I just need to put the tab between the velcro and press it shut. You can see thereâs a lot of excess velcro around the tab which helps keep it in place, but it also sticks to the pre-existing velcro on the actual tab itself. Iâve personally never had a tab come out of the strap before.
Now all I need to do is actually put the diaper on! I lay back, pull the front of the diaper up, and then stick the velcro on the strap to the velcro strip on the front.
And thatâs it! All nice and dry.
What Are They?
The extender itself is called a Convert-Ups (hereâs a link to their website). Theyâre a UK company but seem to have a distribution centre in the U.S. They come in sizes S-XL (but also have additional extenders to size up the XL). To be so honest, I bought mine so long ago that I donât remember what size I got. Based off the sizing on their website, Iâm assuming I wouldâve gotten a medium.
They used to have a lot more fabric options, but now they only have 4 colours listed on their website.
I would consider the cost âpriceyâ but then again, Iâve had mine for years and itâs held up really well, so they do seem to be well-made. Iâve also saved a lot of money being able to buy baby diapers rather than adult ones, which are obviously more expensive, so for me the expense made sense.
My Overall Thoughts
You didnât ask for this, but I wanted to include some of my personal thoughts and feelings about using an extender. (Note: as I was writing this post, I ended up having a lot more to say about my general preference for wearing âbaby diapersâ over âadult diapersâ than I expected. So I'm gonna make a separate post about that instead of trying to condense it into this post.)
Iâll add a huge disclaimer before this to say that these are just my own feelings, and are only specific to my circumstances! If other folks feel differently, and have found different things that work/feel better for them and their circumstances, thatâs awesome! In no way am I attempting to trash or put down things that work for other people.
Honestly, at first I struggled with using the extender. It felt really "clunky" and like there was a lot of added steps beyond just grabbing a fresh diaper and getting a change. I also think I struggled with some body dysmorphia that I wasn't small enough to fit in the diaper I wanted to wear, and some other folks on tumblr could. I was also big into pullups for a long time, and looking back I can see that I just preferred them to wearing an actual diaper.
Now though using it has become second nature, just another step in the changing process. It feels less like an "add-on" and more like just another part of my diaper. For me right now, pullups just aren't scratching the same itch as they used to, and I've needed to be back in diapers. My extender allows that to happen, so now I'm just grateful I have it and am planning on getting more to make changes/wearing easier.
As much as it would be amazing to not need it, the reality is that sizing on baby diapers has been getting smaller and smaller to the point where they don't always fit their literal target market. If you are an adult and want to wear them comfortably, you will need to use an extender. Even adults with an incredibly small waist still have to stretch the diaper to its limits, and you risk having the straps rip at any moment. The rise on them is also quite short, and it's hard (especially for AMAB people, people who wear packers, and just generally anyone with an "outie" part) to position the diaper correctly so it doesn't leak.
With my extender, the straps fit securely, the diaper is in the right place to stop leaks, and the back part even peeks out of my waistband if I'm not careful (a blessing and a curse, haha). And really, it's just a piece of fabric, and I'm still where I belong: back in diapers.
Conclusion
So yeah! That's the little yellow belt in my recent posts. I have a feeling that extenders will continue to be featured in my content for the foreseeable future, so I hope you all don't mind them and (like I have) even come to see them as just a natural extension of my diapers.
I'm happy to answer any more questions about it, so if you have any please don't hesitate to ask!
