This will be focused on the Lovegood side of Luna’s family history, as her mother’s family was new to the region from Sweden. Both lines are pureblooded and extensive so I’ll try to briefly explain the general tone of the family rather than form a comprehensive family tree. (I’ll probably do that later on, if we’re being honest with each other).
The Lovegoods are a family with a history of seers and other witches and wizards naturally gifted in divination, legilimency, and similar talents. While it’s not at all common for a full fledged seer to come up, it is disproportionate to other families by miles. Luna’s grandmother was a seer, but the earliest prior to her dates 4 generations back.
Writers, astrologers, teachers, and less predominantly, explorers. The Lovegoods have always been notoriously...odd and somewhat isolated because of this fact. Their professions stray from the more technical and, for the most part, they’ve always leaned more away from authority than toward it.
Because of this isolation, they were never a very large family. At most, couples would have 2-3 children. Xenophilius was an only child, himself, with only an aunt and an uncle on his father’s side.
During the first war, the Lovegoods weren’t particularly targeted so much as they were just another pureblooded family opposing Voldemort (though having a seer in the living line didn’t help their chances of surviving all that much, given everything). Over the decade and change, nearly the entire family was picked off or died naturally. Xenophilius’ fatherr died in 1972 during his third year at school, and his mother was killed a year after her son was married in 1979.
