who else watched reeve brush an eyelash off of evaâs nose and immediately started bawling
my daughter
"When she breaks for air out here, she's always alone, except for the very first time. She must have fallen off of Van's shoulders, lost their game of Chicken Fightâthere are hands hooking under her armpits, pulling her up, and Van's eyes are closed as she's laughing, practically shaking Shauna with the force of it, and Shauna's laughing too, because Van is so beautiful when she's happy, because everyone around her is smiling, because she's looking for Jackie and wants to tell herâJax, I just had the weirdest fucking dreamâ
But it smacks her across the face, a rogue wave or a plane crash, knocking her down with the weight of it, sucking the air from her lungs until she's choking or screaming or drowning, dying, finally dyingâit was real. It had to be. And she's back hereâhere, and either here isn't real or Shauna isn't, and maybe never was, maybe none of it ever wasâshe's back here, and it will all happen again, again, again, unless something gives, unless something breaks. Unless Shauna breaks. Unless she lets it go."
Or: Shauna kills her baby early enough to change things, this time around. Too bad she's already gone a little fucking insane anyway.

and why does the past come back like this: looming, a human figure formed. -
greyson tolliver arc of a scythe you will NEVER know how good you had it⌠the omniscient supercomputer AND the genderqueer character fell for your ass
particularly fond of the hadestown time loop because for all its thematic resonance it doesnât exist to teach orpheus (or, for that matter, the audience) anything. itâs not a lesson. it doesnât exist to hurt him, itâs not something he earned or deserves, itâs not to save him, it just is the very literal representation of the quantum superposition that is his tragedy. this is how it goes again and again and again. this is how itâs going to go again. and of course weâre gonna sing it again.

i love stories about bad people but beyond that i love stories about bad people who are in bad situations who have bad circumstances who have to do bad things. stories about bad people who care in spite of it or maybe because of it and it doesnât matter but it should matter, because if anything was fair it would matter. stories about bad people who try to be good and it doesnât work and it might even make everything worse off and it accomplishes nothing in the end, and it doesnât matter, but of course it matters, how could it not matter? anyway this post is about iron lung and how doomed the convict is from the beginning and how the game outright says none of the data could be recovered and the movie shows simon getting the black box to the surface but doesnât show anyone finding it and how this is a story about people who do nothing of value, really, but they exist and they try and thereâs value in that. the entire story is that. how the convict is a criminal who did bad things and hurt a lot of people and how the captain is willing to throw away lives with no warning or explanation for a goal she canât even articulate because they donât know whats down there and theyre both bad people and they both try and if this were fair it would matter. if things were right it would matter. it would manifest itself into some outward success some miraculous achievement some saving of the entire universe. and it doesnât, it canât, but they triedâsimon tried to complete his mission, ava tried to save him, and it didnât work, but does that mean it didnât matter?

hauntings or something
really interesting thing about iron lung is how the convict agreed to go in the submarine in the first place and wasnât (textbook) forced into it, which is something probably 99% of people were at least a little aghast byâbecause i would never agree to do something like that, for anything! and then you sit and think about it for a while. whats the difference between a sub and a cell? at least the porthole is covered. you canât see the space between the bars, you canât look freedom in the eye. whatâs the difference between an ocean and outer space? itâs not like you can breathe. itâs not like you can leave. you can say no but your alternative is to sit in that cell and rot, presumably, and nobody is going to listen to what you have to say when youâre in there, either. your oxygen meter is ticking down, but itâs not like theyâre not running out of air on the space stations that are left. itâs just not quite as obvious. youâll either be free or youâll die trying, and at least youâll have tried. desperation makes a beast out of you.
obviously shauna canât get better. she canât fucking heal, grow, change. obviously sheâs going to have an inferiority complex for the rest of her life. shes going to be jealous and petty and angry and sheâs going to give snark to everyone instead of attempting to talk it out. because these things, this inability to communicate, the way she felt about jackie, how she refused to be rational about it, all of that fucking killed her. jackie is DEAD because of it. if shauna ever gets better, itâs just proof that she always could have. that she could have done something, said something, changed anything and jackie would still be alive. these traits have to be innate, they have to be fixed and unchangeable and determined, because if theyâre not then jackieâs death wasnât either. shauna can never stop hating jackie because if she does then she always could have, then she could have let it go so much sooner, then jackie would have stayed inside. their whole stupid argument was life and death out there and now shauna is going to make it life and death everywhere else, too, because if she doesnât then it didnât have to be.
ngl some of these posts sound shortsighted so iâm pulling out the Marjane Satrapi quote:
"You are American, I am Iranian, we donât know each other, but we talk together and we understand each other perfectly. The difference between you and your government is much bigger than the difference between you and me. And the difference between me and my government is much bigger than the difference between me and you. And our governments are very much the same."
iâd say letâs all kill ourselves but in the spirit of this song. letâs all live. and cry our fucking eyes out

Scott's blood had just begun to start flaking off his palms when Shelby appeared. She'd practically crashed through the woods, the cuffs of her white sleeves stained bright red. She'd been panting, looking like she'd sprinted through the whole forest just to find him, and all she said was, "Did you do it?"
Owen didn't have to ask what she meant. He'd left the body, still warm, on the bridge. A slow dip of his head. "Yes," he said.
Shelby shrieked, something unintelligible, and lunged for his face.
or: if Shelby had one more reason to go for Owen's throat.

small hadestown detail i absolutely adore is when hermes is explaining the stipulations of getting to leave in wait for me reprise (âand if you turn around to make sure sheâs coming too / then she goes back to hadestown, and ainât nothing you can doâ) and orpheus, who has been asking questions and wondering out loud the entire time, falls silent. eurydice is the one who says, âbut why?â orpheus doesnât say anything. because he knows why.
