Because the female hormonal cycle was considered "too complicated" for studies, women were simply left out. As a result, women often received incorrect dosages or suffered from severe side effects.

Another example is crash testing. For decades, automotive safety systems were tested almost exclusively using a standard crash-test dummy—1.75 meters tall and weighing 78 kilograms—representing an average man. When female dummies were used at all, they were usually just scaled-down versions placed in the passenger seat. However, because women differ in terms of muscle mass, bone density, and seating position, seatbelts and airbags offered them less protection. Consequently, women faced a significantly higher risk of serious injury in car accidents
