"I wish I could start planning my presidential campaign now. But who knows what the state of the union will be in two and a half decades."

"No." She answered, referring to Lilith’s rhetorical question. She turned, letting her back press against the railing and look at the doors. "I look around and everything is the same but somehow it’s all so different. That’s just how it is." Her teeth grazed over her bottom lip, looking at each face. Serena’s flowing red hair, Xander in his suit, Walker laughing as he talked to some nameless girl, Lance and Danielle being Lance and Danielle, Natalie’s bright smile despite them. But they settled on Patrick, standing alone at the bar talking to the man pouring his drink. Then they looked back to her best friend.
Moving on. It wasn’t simple or easy for anyone. But none of them got a do over, they just had to keep moving and try and do better next time. “They’re still my people you know? In a weird way, I still feel responsible for them all. I think I always will, but…Now it’s different.”
"Of course it's different, in a way. We've all been through the unthinkable." She followed Miranda's gaze, her own lingering on the brunette boy leaning against the marble of the bar and the drink in his hand. "But we get through it somehow, one way or another." She turned back to Miranda, tilting her head, her own problems forgotten and locked away as she faced those of her best friend, her boyfriend, and everyone else.

"Yeah well…Didn’t help much did it?" She inhaled, memories flooding her mind until she willed them out of her mind. They stood silent for a moment after that, it wasn’t awkward but it wasn’t exactly comfortable. Miranda knew Lilith was sparing her feelings, and the logical part of her was grateful.
"God I need a drink." That was what broke the silence, her muddled cry for a coping device. She walked over to Lilith, grabbing her empty glass on the way and out of impulse alone, she tossed it. The crystal shattered on the ground below, and Miranda just watched. It didn’t make her feel better like she hoped it would. "Coming tonight was a bad idea. I’m sorry, I shouldn’t be ruining your time."
"I guess not. People change… Not always for the better."
Lilith let the silence pass, choosing to look out at the city again until Miranda spoke. She watched as the glass shattered, flinching slightly at the sudden sharp noise. “Don’t apologize to me, apologize to the glass,” she joked. “You’re not. I'd rather be out here than in there." She gestured towards the door.
"Serena’s flaunting that asshole on her arm again because she doesn't realize she can do better. Xander is brooding. Walker is Walker. Lance is all over Danielle like herpes. Between him and I, I’m not sure who our father wants to kill more, but that calm before the storm look he has going on tells me I’ll find out later. Natalie is trying to burn me alive with her glares every time I so much as even look at her brother. Or breathe." She laughed a little. "So it’s a typical Big Seven party. I'm kind of been there, done that about it. You know? You're not ruining my night, though. My night is just fine."
"I don’t wish them dead…" Miranda said softly, her voice losing a lot of it’s previous hardness. She never really wished anyone dead, situations just called for that course of action sometimes. Her hands were not bloodless, but she wasn’t thirsting for the chance to add more stains.
She didn’t answer the key question, instead she just watched and listened. But every word bubbled up raw emotions in her. Hurt. Sadness. Bitterness. Anger. “Of course.” Miranda’s voice was sharp, jaded and admittedly a bit bratty. “Of course you wouldn’t change anything. As your life fell apart, a new one was already sprouting up for you. When he left, you already had another shoulder to cry on. It’s just me here.” Her eyes were stinging as she closed them, they wanted to cry but no tears came out. Instead two angry fists clenched at her side. “We were suppose to be different…We weren’t you two.” Wow. That. Was. So. Wrong. So wrong to think, and even worse to say. Her features filled with guilt, that wasn’t fair. That was just hateful. And the worst part was, she couldn’t blame it on alcohol or anything else. That…Was all her. "I’m sorry."
Lilith stared at the brunette, somewhat taken aback by her words but not entirely surprised. Miranda was hurt. Hurt people said hurtful things that weren't always deserved. Lilith of all people knew that. But though the situation with Lance no longer pained her like it did before she could see it clearly for what it was, she didn't appreciate it being thrown back at her like this.
"Yeah. Well." She gritted her teeth, willing herself not to bite back, which was particularly difficult when the alcohol running through her system was egging her on. But this wasn't some asshole ex or school enemy. This was her best friend. It took a lot for her to reign her tongue in, but she managed it, if only because there was truth to Miranda's harsh words. "Lannister men suck. Who knew."
Finishing off her glass, she set it down on the edge of the balcony and looked away, over the city to its lights and noise. The world was crashing down around Miranda, it had crashed down around Lilith, but it still went on everywhere else.
"But you're right. You aren't us. Lance and I could have never worked even if we tried. We started out by him taking advantage of my vulnerability." The memory of their first kiss, right after he'd discovered what Sawyer was doing to her, surfaced. It was wrong to blame a fourteen year old kid for not knowing how to handle that difficult situation, so she didn't, but she did blame the selfish eighteen year old who continued to manipulate and use her. And she blamed herself, for letting him.
"I should have known we'd end the same way. But you guys had a stronger foundation."
