Just saw a post on X, someone showing off a screen recording showing a fic turning red and calling out the author. In the comments, they went on with: "I reported them, now all their fics are deleted. The author should have listened to me when I told them to add an AI tag. I was just trying to be nice" (Nice???)
This — THIS!!! — behaviour is what destroys fandom spaces! It's absolutely unacceptable and not nice in any way. The fic surely didn't get deleted because they reported it, since ao3 allows AI-generated work. I'm pretty sure "the author" deleted it themselves because they got called out and harassed.
Sure, everyone can have their opinion on AI generated work, but witch-hunts and call-out posts are what destroy fandoms, not AI. They could have just clicked away and left the fic alone.
More real writers will stop posting because they don't want to deal with this shitshow anymore or fear they'll get called out wrongly.
I really appreciate that you always tell people they can do whatever they want with their fanfiction, as long as it's fiction and doesn't harm anyone in real life. I appreciate that you tell people to just click away and not harass anyone.
yeah this. an ai checker that could 100% prove if a piece of writing was copied and pasted directly from an ai platform without false positives (and if I’m being honest, I don’t trust any of the “tools” we have now to not show any false positives, even if they’re 99% accurate, that’s still not enough for me because it means there’s a 1% chance of the tool glitching out and showing red on a human-made work) was great in theory. but people will always use it as a means to justify harassment.
like I think that tool is great if everybody who uses it uses it to see if a fic is ai and then moves on if a fic is ai without resorting to screen recording or screenshotting fics and then posting those fics to harass people.
“but they use ai!!!!!” well that still doesn’t justify harassment. nothing does. I don’t like ai fics. I’ll scroll past a fic that’s tagged as ai. but I’ll never harass anybody over it even though I disagree with their choice to let ai write for them.
fanfic writing is a hobby. and how someone chooses what they do with their hobby or how they do it is none of my business.
do I think an ai-generated fic should be tagged as ai accordingly? yes. but seeing how people harass other people for using ai, I’m not surprised why someone is afraid to be honest and tag their ai-generated fic as ai.
you (general you) can argue that ai is ethically bad. you can argue that ai is harmful to the environment. but you’re still a bully the second you direct your anger towards a random person and harass them for not sharing your moral values.
if you want to be mad at something, be mad at the multi billion companies who make and promote gen ai, not a random person who uses gen ai.
