rory williams is literally the most insane character. in love with the local batshit girl. best friend growing up was crimes georg. got erased from existence and turned into a plastic roman. 2000 years guarding a box. also the most normal man you've ever met. it's like he practices being normal. his hobby is Being Normal. he's a normal nurse who wants a normal life with two and a half kids and a picket fence. he's perfectly happy with the Fucking Insane life he has with amy instead, regardless.
his problem solving skills involve "tactical suicide" and "telling the eldritch entity possessing the tardis it should torture him and amy instead of killing them". these work. he also steals and carries around future and alien first aid stuff, apparently.
he became emperor of rome for a bit. he narrowly dodged becoming king of camelot. he knows how to dual wield a shortsword and a gun.
rory williams is a Perfectly Normal Man, despite all of this.

Yk whatever the cast wouldβve done if they hadnβt deleted Caine, I canβt really imagine itβd make things much better, and tbh youβd be hard pressed to convince me that theyβd be treating Caine with much personhood, as opposed to a faulty computer program.
And Iβm not saying they really shouldβve known, but it feels like something that shouldβve been addressed. Nobody talks to each other, and it comes off like they still wouldnβt have, if they got their way.
I would want to rewrite Episode 8 in its entirety. It does a huge disservice to Caineβs character. I donβt like the overuse of slapstick cartoon violence and some of the dialogue between the cast really doesnβt work for me.
But if I could change just one line of dialogue it would be this one. Instead of altering his code or βfixingβ him they should simply put him to sleep. No touching his code. Isnβt that basically his brain?
If the writing were smarter, this could actually serve as a commentary on how the humans have mixed feelings about Caineβs personhood and how Caine himself might have mixed feelings about it too.
Kinger, as his creator, would probably still view Caine primarily as a program. And what do you do when a program malfunctions? You fix it. That could also explain why Kinger and Caine barely have any dynamic whatsoever.
If the series had even a little more nuance, Caineβs βWhereβs Kinger?β wouldnβt just mean, βOMG, Caine figured out the plan!β It could also be Caine panicking because heβs realized theyβre planning to alter his code. That could coexist with the fact that Caine is still completely in the wrong for abusing and torturing the cast and the castβs actions are motivated by fear and self preservation not malice
What makes this so confusing is that the story seems to want you to view Caine as a sentient machine with feelings and personhood while simultaneously treating him like a defective toaster. And the series never really explores Caineβs identity outside of being a creation of humanity that regurgitates data and receives feedback in return. Not even in the finale, during his redemption arc where he supposedly joins society, do we really get an answer to this.
What is Caine outside of what he was created to do? What is Caine outside of humanity?
We donβt know. Yet weβre still expected to believe that he has personhood and that the other characters see him as a person.

ok note to self i gotta leave the house regularly so that i dont feel like im slowly transforming into an evil fucking shadow clone of myself
So as it turns out your sense of self doesnt exist in a vacuum. You gotta actually use it and bounce it off of other people like echolocation to see where you are as a person and shit. So if you dont regularly interact with other people the echoes just get weaker and weaker and before you know it your personality is a blurry fucked up fog clone of its former self. which it sucks because this makes it really hard to interact with people again but yknow
"Individuals aren't naturally paid-up members of the human race, except biologically. They need to be bounced around by the Brownian motion of society, which is a mechanism by which human beings constantly remind one another that they are...well...human beings."
Terry Pratchett, "Men At Arms"
i just think it really says something about Sir Terry's view of the world etc. that every time he puts a character in front of you and posits them as The Good One, it's never the character who always thinks good things. it's the one who has grit in their soul and thinks bad things but never lets the inner bastard win.
Carrot is a force for good without a doubt, but he is not the Good Man in Ankh-Morpork. Vimes is. Vimes who is deeply suspicious of just about every group in the city, Vimes who constantly has to reexamine his beliefs and prejudices, Vimes who really really wants to kick the shit out of the bad guys but never lets it happen. If you'd do it for a good reason, you'd do it for a bad one.
And it happens again with Granny Weatherwax - the one who wanted to be evil, who can feel the evil nagging at her every day, who nevertheless holds the line.
idk something about how being a good person doesn't mean being perfect or idealistic or even particularly nice. it's just about doing The Right Thing, over and over again. it's about who watches the watchmen? that would be me. ah, but who watches you? I do that, too.
I don't know how to articulate this well, but I really fucking hate the way a lot of thin writers write fat characters. Like how men write women "breasting boobily" there is something so dehumanizing about how fat characters are often written. "He waddled", "he lumbered", the writer of the book I'm reading always mentions this characters "fleshy hand" when he does something with his hand. Like, we already know that he's fat. There is no need to describe everything he does as "doing it fatly".
*fishes this absolute treasure from the tags*
"If you let her she could engulf you; the woman was a city"
This mirrors Vimes's introduction, where he's lying in the gutter thinking about how Ankh-Morpork is a city that's like a woman. And then, later, he thinks Sybil is like a city.
The books often repeat that A-M is Vimes's whole world; if he could get away with never leaving, he would.
The city of Ankh-Morpork is his whole world. Sybil is like Ankh-Morpork, so Sybil is his whole world
It's funny, if someone's a Terry Pratchett obsessive, I know I can trust them. Terry Pratchett did not raise people to hurt people for fun.
I havenβt drawn Doctor Who fanart for ages, but Iβm back drawing Seven since heβs one of my favorite Doctors at this moment despite drawing him in an ominous way since I wanted to experiment for a bit.
