I would want to rewrite Episode 8 in its entirety. It does a huge disservice to Caine’s character. I don’t like the overuse of slapstick cartoon violence and some of the dialogue between the cast really doesn’t work for me.
But if I could change just one line of dialogue it would be this one. Instead of altering his code or “fixing” him they should simply put him to sleep. No touching his code. Isn’t that basically his brain?
If the writing were smarter, this could actually serve as a commentary on how the humans have mixed feelings about Caine’s personhood and how Caine himself might have mixed feelings about it too.
Kinger, as his creator, would probably still view Caine primarily as a program. And what do you do when a program malfunctions? You fix it. That could also explain why Kinger and Caine barely have any dynamic whatsoever.
If the series had even a little more nuance, Caine’s “Where’s Kinger?” wouldn’t just mean, “OMG, Caine figured out the plan!” It could also be Caine panicking because he’s realized they’re planning to alter his code. That could coexist with the fact that Caine is still completely in the wrong for abusing and torturing the cast and the cast’s actions are motivated by fear and self preservation not malice
What makes this so confusing is that the story seems to want you to view Caine as a sentient machine with feelings and personhood while simultaneously treating him like a defective toaster. And the series never really explores Caine’s identity outside of being a creation of humanity that regurgitates data and receives feedback in return. Not even in the finale, during his redemption arc where he supposedly joins society, do we really get an answer to this.
What is Caine outside of what he was created to do? What is Caine outside of humanity?
We don’t know. Yet we’re still expected to believe that he has personhood and that the other characters see him as a person.
