listen there are a lot of criticisms of freud and his theories and I think most of those are valid and important and true. and also when we in the field say that he built the house we live in, this excerpt from the study material I'm reading describing the process of psychoanalysis really highlights that:
(1) Confrontation involves helping clients recognize behaviors they’ve been unaware of and their possible cause. (2) Clarification brings the cause of behaviors into sharper focus by separating important details from extraneous material. (3) Interpretation involves explicitly linking conscious behaviors to unconscious processes. (4) Repeated interpretation leads to catharsis (the experience of repressed emotions) and insight into the connection between unconscious material and current behavior and then to working through, which is a gradual process during which the client accepts and integrates new insights into his/her life.
the behaviorists will argue with me but this is just every therapeutic approach boiled down to its essential components. The clarification and interpretation phases are going to use a different set of semantics and theoretical basis, and other therapies are gonna add in some coping skills or tool sets in lieu of repeated interpretations. but this is the structure of therapy. it just is. we're all doing essentially the same thing in the house that freud built.

the fun thing about having a mental health crashout in your thirties is that sure yeah you're crashing out, but at the same time there's a part of you standing across the room smoking ben affleck style, going yeah yeah you're crashing out. you crashed out before you will crash out again can we wrap this up yet. and the most annoying part about it is that they're right, and that that does Not stop you from crashing out even a little. love and light on planet earth.
you know what I deeply appreciate about some of my autistic clients? the rigidity that so often gets pathologized means they are not only the most consistent and reliably on time of my clients, they also actually cancel sessions well in advance instead of waiting for the last minute and I have to charge them the fee. 10/10 would work with you again.

I kept forgetting my nighttime antidepressant so I set an alarm where the sound was a recording of me saying "HEY. TAKE YOUR FUCKING PILL" because I thought it would be funny. It was funny about three times, and then it started making me mad and I'd dismiss it right away to make it stop. So I handed my phone to my partner, who made another recording sweetly saying "Okay Shira, it's time to take your medication" and now I don't get mad anymore and I take my pill. The "compassion over punishment" camp has gotta get something wrong one of these days

8 episode seasons are utterly ruining modern TV. Now I haven't read the book, so I can't compare the pacing, but I am sure that season one of interview with the vampire could have benefited from some so-called "filler." Just a few more episodes of the disaster family fucking around and having misadventures and character moments in 20th century New Orleans before we have to advance the plot would have gone such a long way for me. Is it too much to ask for episodes of TV that solely focus on relationship building between characters? Must everything be plot focused at all times? It's TV, not a movie. Let it breathe.
