A Spark of Life

Errin looked at her for a moment, as if waiting for her to say more but he quickly glanced away. “Well let’s pray someone isn’t following you without your knowledge, those are the people who are actually dangerous.” He stopped for a moment before continuing. “Don’t try to act like a local, no one is going to think you live there no matter what you do. Just try to pass yourself off as a boring traveler. I know this is a common route for one on a pilgrimage, so maybe try to claim that if someone asks. They’re always nicer to pilgrims. I’ve lived comfortably off that lie alone. I’m sure if you tell them a story or two they might start talking about the town. Of course don’t directly ask them about it, then they’ll get suspicious.”

Errin nodded, glad she understood. “If an outsider does something strange, they’re just an outsider, if a neighbor does something strange there’s chase for concern. Besides even if we act like we belong there, people like us never, never fit in anywhere. That’s just not how things go.”

Ruby nodded, glad that Errin was keeping her up on just what she would have to do in order to not draw any notice. He seemed like he knew what he was talking about in this instance. “Yeah, that makes sense,” Ruby began, pulling at the fringe of her hat nervously. “Want me to go and find the Inn?” 

Ruby did not want to tail this person originally but against her better judgement she did it anyway. They reminded her of someone and she had to make sure that she was 100 percent wrong before walking away. Now that she was walking toward her, Ruby had confirmed that she had indeed been incorrect, but now was potentially in danger.  Pulling her knit hat downward to cover her ears she stepped forward, rubbing her left arm nervously. “I’m sorry about following you,” Ruby apologized,looking at girl apologetically. “From where I was standing you looked like someone I knew. I just had to be sure you weren’t them.” 

Ruby was glad that Eve wasn’t planning on attacking her, because going into any situation blind was dangerous. If there was something Ruby didn’t want, it was to mess with some sort of danger that she couldn’t handle and frankly she didn’t know anything about this girl.  “No, I’m not normal,” Ruby said, reaching up and scratching behind her head sheepishly. She took a moment to remove her hat to reveal her lupine look ears and undid her jacket in order for her tail to slip out. “Is it really that obvious? Though, you’re not normal either from what I can tell.” 

Ruby nodded, reaching up at scratching the back of her head nervously. Well, this was certainly something she wasn’t expecting to tell someone today. “I’m a half-alien and I can not only turn into a wolf like creature but I have electricity based powers.” She explained all in one breath, instinctively flinching away when she was done. When she saw she wasn’t going to be attacked immediately she did loosen up a little, still playing with the edges of her hat nervously. 

Breathing out a sigh of relief, Ruby relaxed a lot more, giving Eve a smile. Now, the vampire and Lycan thing should have freaked her out, but at this point she had seen so many strange creatures, she was desensitized to all of this.  “Thanks, that makes me feel better. Glad I’m not the only one around here who’s a little different.” Ruby said,taking a step closer to Eve. “So...do you want to go somewhere else, maybe get some food or something? I haven’t eaten in a bit and I think we have a lot to talk about.” 

Ruby did not want to tail this person originally but against her better judgement she did it anyway. Letting people know how you feel just invites weakness. He gauged how far they were away from the town only to realize it hadn’t been a minute yet. This was going to be a long night for him. He glanced over at Ruby. Maybe he could start a conversation. No, he reminded himself again of his full plan to take advantage of the situation and maybe forget what happened long ago.

Ruby wasn’t much of a conversation starter, so she followed after Errin in relative silence. Now, she didn’t trust him fully, something about the way he acted sent up red flags in her mind. However, she would follow him and do what she said she’d do until he made any sort of move to possibly send her into danger.  Sure he said he wasn’t reckless but Ruby certainly didn’t believe him. How could she, they had only just met about an hour ago now. Eventually she did speak, tugging at the ends of her hat nervously. “So where are we going first?” 

Errin didn’t look back at her. “Well once we get to town I’m king to drop you off at a public place where no one will question someone who they’ve never seen before. After that I’m going to find the in and outs of the town, maybe grab us some food and find us a place to rest for the night. Tomorrow morning we’ll get up and leave town when everyone else is busy with their commute. That is assuming we don’t hear any interesting news in the town. Before we head to sleep tonight, we’re going to make a more detailed plan to find your sister and follow that once we leave town.

Thanks to the technology she had at her disposal, Ruby could have this place mapped out. Now she wouldn’t tell Erinn that of course, she wanted him to feel a little important. “Sounds like a plan, I hope we get there soon. I have some charts we could use to help hammer out our master plan.” Ruby replied cheerily. “I’m thinking we could maybe chart out the general area, environmental factors and things like that.”

“Little more than half an hour until we get there I’m guessing. Probably one of the most valuable things we can get in making the plan is the locals knowledge, I’m going to figure out as much as I can before we even start on the plan, if you want you can try, but don’t draw attention to yourself. Until we have a clearer picture of where we’re going that’s not what we want. By the way, I should ask, is anyone looking for you? As someone who is constantly running and or hiding from multiple people and organizations, I can help you with that too, and it’ll be important to know so i can’t sip any important information.” He paused for a moment and added. “Oh, and if this doesn’t go well you might also start getting chased by some people.”

It wasn’t that Ruby didn’t like people, no quite the opposite actually, but she just didn’t like having perfectly good robots that she wasn’t using.  “Looking for me? Not to my knowledge.” Ruby replied, lying through her teeth. There were people who very much would like her back, but actively looking for her? Not so much. Ruby reached up and scratched the back of her head sheepishly. “ I can talk to people about any local stuff that we need to know and map the place out. I may stick out a little bit though since I’m not a local.” ”
