The canonical nature of assigned sex, gender, and views on queerness in Lightbound
Being AMAB vs being AFAB leads to virtually no physical differences. The main, most noticeable one is just breasts or no breasts.
And one might ask: "But wait, how does say, being intersex work then? If that's the only thing that determines sex, are there only binary sexes? And how does assigned sex work?" And the answers to those are no and I'm about to explain. See, there are other smaller differences, including two even as grubs. AMAB grubs will have 4 pairs of legs, which are solid black. AFAB grubs will have 3 pairs of legs, which are blood colored at the ends. AMAB pupated trolls have 2 sets of grub scars and AFAB pupated trolls have 1 set, either way in their blood color.
Those are the determining factors in sex, anything that doesn't fit entirely into one of those before pupation is considered intersex, as would say an AMAB troll with breasts.
Other things affected by sex are height or voice, for example; these however are more minor differences, as even a cisgender and perisex individual might, for example, be taller than or have a higher voice than is "typical" for their AGAB, even in real life individuals.
Sex is does not affect genitalia. If this were a setting/universe with trolls who could reproduce sexually, it wouldn't even effect that, because troll biology is already strange enough for this to at least loosely fit it. Sex is quite literally that arbitrary in Lightbound.
Despite the mostly arbitrary nature of assigned sex, gender and gender identity are still a larger element in Lightbound, as is orientation. Transphobia exists, homophobia exists, other forms of queerphobia like that which exist in real life still exist here, despite the fact that these things have no effect on reproduction or anything else of the sort. To put it bluntly, queerphobia is even stupider than it is in real life, yet it still exists. It shouldn't, but it does.
Amazing news, we have retconned out queerphobia.
