So honestly, if the cost to get those three things is that its not a *new* $2000 check, only a $1400 check…. you may disagree, but I’ll call this one a win.

of course the “dev” is fake and the rando who reported the kid is part of the scam ring, and the kid is not going to get his money refunded by the scammer. the issue here is that since the money was willingly sent through a 3rd party transfer service (anything like paypal, venmo, cashapp, etc) the kid has almost NO WAY to dispute these charges, even though he was scammed.

Not related to this particular scam, but still common: do not buy gift cards except for the express purpose of having that gift card, do not verify a purchase by reading off the codes on gift cards, once someone has that money it's gone. Do not deposit checks and then immediately try to withdraw them. Do not take "jobs" that require you to pay a portion of your paycheck to someone else. Do not deposit checks on behalf of someone else. Make sure you're on the official website, and don't use forms of contact that you can't confirm.

if you get contacted by someone on your friends list with that story, let them know on whatever other means you have to contact them that their account’s been compromised.

They should just box and cut out the middle men.
