The booth was stuffy and smelled like itâs been forgotten for a decade. But the equipment was new and the glass pane was cleaned up, giving Eddie a clear view of the court.
âIs this a good moment to say I donât know the rules?â
The coach, and his PE professor, looks one step away from murder.
âJust remember our team is wearing green.â
âYes sir!â
The man squints at him with clear distrust so Eddie gives him his widest, purest smile.
âGood thing nobodyâs listening to the campus radio.â
The jokeâs on him; Eddie has garnered a lot of listeners over the past months. Listeners that he might lose after hosting a live sports event.Â
âDonât be too weird. I might send you someone to help with the rules so you donât completely ruin it.â He pats Eddie on the shoulder, his palm so heavy it feels like heâs trying to pin him into the chair, before disappearing behind the door in the back. Seconds later heâs visible walking down the steps to his team.
Eddie looks at his watch. Itâs going to be the longest four hours in his academic history.Â
He turns to the concsole, frowns at the unfamiliar dials and switches and focuses on the ones he knows. Tunes everything to his best ability, takes a breath, and clears his throat before starting the broadcast.
âHello, students of Indiana University! I know itâs a Friday night and you were hoping for some nice tunes to party to, but prepare your pillows for a nap instead because youâll be listening to a football match. No, wait, basketball. Iâm pretty sure.Â
Anyway, dunno why youâd listen to a match instead of going to see it, but ya boy needs to pass PE this term so here we are.Â
And here comes our team! The green ones. Itâs greens against blues tonight, folks.â
âTigers versus Roaches, actually.â
Eddie turns around and sees a tall boy enter his studio.
âFirst of all, who the fuck names their team Roaches. Second, we have an intruder in the studio.â
The boy extends his hand unfazed.
âIâm Lucas, your interpreter. Since Iâm benching for the first half anyway.â
âBooo, I was just going to make up rules as I go. Now youâre gonna make it boring.â
But he shakes his hand anyway and lets Lucas sit on the chair next to him.
âCareful, Iâm a dedicated listener. My friends too, youâd probably lose your whole audience.â He smirks. Eddie scoffs.
âIâll let you know, tiger cub, that many people listen to Munsonâs Midnight Metal Madness.â
âI meant the DnD show.â
Eddie looks at the boy, his neat haircut and team jersey.
âReally?â
âYes, and Iâd love to talk more about it later, but now letâs introduce my teammates.â
Eddie hands him the microphone to spit out names heâs never heard before and whatever their bearers' positions were. He hopes the coach doesnât mind it. All Eddie could do was like, comment on their appearance. WhichâŠ
âWhere did you get that one from? Americaâs poster boy catalog?â
He watches Lucasâs face twitch with the effort not to laugh.
âThatâs Jason Carver. Heâs vice-captain now and will take over the team once Steve graduates later this year.â
âWhich oneâs that?â
âHe usually comes out last.â
Eddie asks about the important stuff - the team's average height and where Andy got his haircut. He looks over the group of young men appraisingly.
âYou know what, if I knew yâall play in these funky white socks and guns out I might have gotten into sports commentary earlier.â
Lucas chuckles, but Eddie's on a roll.Â
âEspecially with such a great co-host, Lucas Sinclair! Heâs not on the court yet but heâs being an invaluable source of lore in the studio. Donât think Iâd forget about you, man.â He nudges the younger student. âWhatâs your specialty on the team?â
âWellâŠâ Lucas scratches his cheek sheepishly. âIâm probably the fastest and my throws are pretty good,â he admits. âOh, thatâs Steve!â
Eddie looks to the right, where a dude with Harrington on his jersey walks in, smiling wide to friends and families watching.Â
âDamn, thatâs some magnificent hair,â Eddie whistles.
âYeah, thatâs kinda what heâs known for. This hairdo lasts through the whole game, dunno how he does it.â
âHeâs gotta give me some tips, because I look like a wet rat by the end of the day. And I donât even do sports.â
âIâm pretty sure you look like a wet rat no matter the time of day.â
The jab was true but even if it wasnât, Eddie had a more important thing to focus on right now.Â
âDoes your captain have a tattoo?â he asks, squinting through the window. He was pretty sure it was ink that was peeking from the bottom of Steve Harringtonâs shorts, but it was so out of place on a college athlete, he needed a triple take and the âask the audienceâ lifeline to make sure.
âYep. The coach says it makes him look like a criminal,â he snorts, showing what he thinks about it. âSteve said he regrets not getting it somewhere more visible so more people could see tattoos are not for criminals and rockstars only.â
âYour captain is a smart guy,â Eddie grins, almost sighing into it, to his utter horror. Just a glimpse of a hot guy from afar, a peek of a tattoo, and hearing of his liberal views was apparently enough to make his heart beat faster.
âThe best I ever knew,â Lucas admits and it sounds like a Story, capital âsâ and all. His next words confirm that. âOur friend group is planning matching tattoos and we are still talking him out of getting it above the neckline.â
Eddie barks out a laugh.Â
âSounds like a savage. I gotta meet your captain sometime soon.â
Itâs at this point they notice the coach gesturing at them angrily and they get back to commenting on the game thatâs about to start.
âOkay, so explain to me which laundry basket is oursâŠâ
âOkay okay okay. So number four is a tank, yeah? He blocks the other players. Six is a rogue, who slips between the cracks. And number one, your captain, is a warrior who goes for the attack.â
âYeah, I guess.â
âItâs like LARPing for normies,â Eddie realizes in awe and Lucas laughs so unexpectedly he starts to cough.Â
âSinclair! Youâre in!â
They both jump at the sudden appearance of the coach. Lucas springs up from his seat.
âYes sir!â
âIt was a pleasure to host with you.â Eddie smiles at his new friend.
âYou too. Catch you after the game?â
âSure.â He smiles brightly, his head already swimming with ideas of how to fuck over Lucasâ future DnD character. Because playing together was inevitable, the dice were thrown, and the plot was in motion.Â
Lucas passes by the coach who now turns his attention to Eddie.
âYouâre doing good, donât ruin it.â He looks in pain admitting that. âI might send someone else to help you out.â
âThanks, coach.â Though Eddie doubts heâd be vibing so well with anyone else on the team.
Just five minutes later though, heâs proven wrong.
âHeard youâve been curious about my tattoo?â
Eddie's so startled he knocks the microphone down and yanks out the cord in his haste to turn around.Â
âCaptain!â he yells like a dumbass, faced with the hair and boyishness of no one else but Steve Harrington.Â
âRadio-man!â Steve yells back with a wide and teasing smile. âIâve heard so much about you, man, you have no idea.â He steps closer. âMy kids love your show.â
âYour kids?â
âMy, uh, younger friends. I used to babysit them and it kinda stuck,â he admits with an awkward smile. Steve is nothing like the typical jock heâs come to expect and heâs everything Lucas advertised.
âThatâs adorable, man.â
âDonât laugh at me,â he pouts. He honest to god pouts.
âNot laughing!â Eddie raises his hands placatingly. âThereâs nothing bad with a family-tight friend group.â
âDamn straight.â Steve smiles and sits on the chair vacated by Lucas. He eyes the microphone lying prone on the desk. âTechnical difficulties?â
Eddie rushes to fix his equipment.
âYou could say so,â he murmurs, trying to busy himself with the tangled cord. But a hand stops him before he can plug it in.
âWeâre off the air now, right?â
Eddie looks over the control lights on the console.
âYeah. Why?â
âYou have beautiful eyes.â
âWhat?â
When Eddie woke up today, he knew his day would be weird. No day spent in a sports facility could be normal or pleasant. It was confirmed when he made a new friend with a member of the team, who was a listener of his DnD podcast. But the team captain hitting on him? Thatâs not your regular weird, thatâs a bad strain of weed kind of weird.
âLucas sent me over claiming a guy my type might be hiding here.â
It takes everything from Eddie not to take a look around. Logically, he knows thereâs no one else in the booth. But his brain refuses to connect the dots. He licks his lips and cringes at the wet noise his mouth makes.
âWhatâs your type?â
Steve tilts his head and hums like heâs in thought.
âWeird, smartass nerd, as it turns out. With big brown eyes and great hair.â
âUh, thank you?â
Steve only smiles at him, soft before it turns teasing.
âWanna see my tattoo up close?â he offers.Â
âGosh, yes,â he admits with zero shame, eyes flitting down to the manâs legs. Was he curious about what type of tattoo a gorgeous sport-type guy would get? Yes. Did he want to ogle some hairy thighs? Also yes. Itâs a two-in-one kind of deal.
The coach waves at them angrily to get back on the air, but Steve promises to tell him everything about S.S. Robin after the game. And no, Robin is just his best friend, Eddie doesnât need to worry about her.
âIn fact, wanna be my date to the after-party later? The kids will freak out when they meet you.â
How could Eddie say no to his fans' worship?
And to Steveâs hopeful eyes and the slight squeeze he gave his hand.
âMingling with jocks in my free time?â Eddie turns his palm up to squeeze back. âSure, letâs make this day even weirder.â

(steddie | teen | 3.2k | tags: werewolf!Steve, Human!Eddie, hurt!Steve, Eddie taking care of Steve, minor characters death | @steddielovemonth prompt: Love is feeling safe by @novacorpsrecruit | AO3)
He runs for his life, his paws hitting the snowy ground with heavy thumps. His flank hurts where the bullet buried itself, but it's distant, drowned out by his instinct to survive. He can't afford to slow down, so he pushes through, letting his instincts carry him as fast as his legs will take him.
His pursuers are only human, not equipped to keep up with a nearly grown wolf. But he's hurt, and he's exhausted, and they have guns.
Part of him wonders why he's even trying to save himself.
They killed the whole village. His parents, his friends, his neighbors. They all burned to death, and those who managed to escape the flames were slaughtered by the hunters. All except him, who managed to escape through the secret tunnels beneath their home, while his parents stayed behind to fight off the invaders.
The Harringtons had been the alphas of their pack, and it was their responsibility to protect the pack with their lives.
None of them deserved to die. No one in their pack had ever hurt a human. They hardly ever saw one, choosing to live as far away from their settlements as possible while still being able to trade with them for the goods they couldn't produce.
It didn't matter to the hunters who came late at night and ambushed them in their sleep. In their eyes, they were monsters. His parents always warned him that humans would never understand them, would always fear them, and fear breeds hatred. Humans couldn't be trusted, they weren't safe.
Back when that meant he couldn't be friends with the daughter of the blacksmith his parents did business with, he refused to believe them. But now it seems that they were always right.
Humans are not to be trusted. They're not safe.
It feels like Steve has been running for hours and still he hears them following him, following his bloody trail. They're not even stealthy, branches snapping, shouts and the occasional gunshot. He's not sure how much longer he can keep going, the pain and exhaustion finally catching up with him.
He's so focused on listening to the hunters behind him that he doesn't really look where he's going, just runs and runs and runs.
Suddenly the world turns upside down, the pain in his flank flares up, white-hot, and then everything goes dark.
He comes to slowly, his senses catching up with reality one by one.
It's warm where he lies, the sharp smell of burning wood heavy in the air. Panic rises in his throat and he can't stop the whine falling from his muzzle, it must mean he didn't make it out after all, he's still trapped in the burning ruins of his home. He's going to die here, burned alive like everyone else he's known since he was a pup.
His ears pick up other sounds over the crackling of a nearby fire. Someone is here, Steve can smell them. Smell him. It's a human, a man. His scent is strong, clinging to the soft blanket Steve can feel beneath him. He's humming a familiar tune, his voice deep and melodic, and Steve can't believe he's about to die with the tune of a nursery rhyme stuck in his head.
Heavy footsteps are coming toward him, and Steve hasn't opened his eyes yet, but he thinks the guy is wearing heavy boots. It's winter, after all, and humans don't run as hot as wolves, completely unprotected from the harshness of the season.
His whole body aches, every limb is heavy, and exhaustion is trying to drag him under again. Steve knows he's in no condition to fight, that he won't last more than a few seconds before the human kills him, but he won't die without a fight. That's not who he is.
So when he feels the human stop in front of him and fall to his knees beside Steve's motionless body, Steve attacks.
Well, he tries. But his body won't cooperate, the pain makes him so dizzy that he almost loses consciousness as he tries to rise enough to sink his teeth into the human's soft flesh. He sinks back down, with pained whimpers he tries to suppress but can't.
"Shh, hey, it's okay, buddy. I'm not gonna hurt you. I promise. I'm trying to help you, but you are gonna have to stay still and let me, okay?"
It doesn't make any sense, none of it, but he's so tired and the voice talking to him sounds so nice, warm and soothing. It makes him want to lie still and let it wash over him. With the last of his strength, he blinks his eyes open to look at the man who is about to end his life, no matter what his alluring voice promises.
The last thing Steve sees before the pain and exhaustion pulls him back under are the man's eyes. They were a rich, dark brown, like melted chocolate under a gentle heat. Their warmth held a soft depth, inviting and comforting, reminiscent of a cozy fireplace on a chilly evening. With each gaze, it was as if the soft flicker of candlelight danced within them, creating an aura of quiet reassurance.
The next time Steve is awake, he feels better. He's still weak, but the bone-deep exhaustion has eased. So has the pain, a dull ache rather than a white-hot agony that sets his nerves on fire. As he comes more and more to himself, his brain clearing the haze of sleep, he takes stock.
He's still alive.
He's still surrounded by the scent of the man who found him.
He's comfortable, a soft surface and blankets beneath him.
He's starving.
As if he heard Steve's thoughts - or more likely his growling stomach - Steve hears the man approaching again. Opening his eyes blearily, Steve sees him standing in the doorway with a plate in his hand, and the smell that hits Steve's nose makes his empty stomach cramp with hunger, and saliva floods his mouth. Roasted chicken, Steve's favorite.
"Look who's awake," the man says, and Steve wonders if he knows who Steve is or if he's one of those guys who talks to animals. He really hopes it's the latter, because that makes his chances of survival at least a little better.
The man takes another two steps towards him, but then stops and looks at him cautiously.
"Okay, last time didn't go so well, huh?" He asks, but Steve thinks it's more rhetorical. "I've got food for you, so please don't bite me? God, it's a good thing Wayne isn't here or he'd think I'd finally lost it, talking to a wolf."
Shaking his head, the man comes closer and Steve takes in his appearance. He doesn't look particularly dangerous, rather slender with dark curls and a pale complexion. He doesn't carry any weapons, but he does have an ugly scar on his face. It must have been a deep cut, and it runs in a jagged line across his cheek.
Steve tries to lift his head when the man is close enough to strike, but he only manages a few inches before sinking back down with a soft whine.
"Hey, hey, hey, you shouldn't move yet, sweetheart. It's a miracle nothing's broken, as far as I can tell, but that bullet really did a number on you, almost like it was poisoned. Bastards to do this to another being."
Silver bullet, Steve thinks. That explains the intense pain and weakness.
Then he forgets all about it the moment the smell of the chicken intensifies as the man reaches out to Steve's muzzle with a large chunk of meat between his fingers. The man, if you can call him that, probably about Steve's age, looks terrified as he does so, but he doesn't stop until Steve can close his teeth around the meat and pull it into his mouth. When the meat is gone, Steve chewing happily and the guy still in possession of all five fingers, his host breathes a sigh of relief.
"Shit, man, that was scary," the man laughs, his dimples popping. He beams at Steve as he hands him another large chunk of chicken.
This human is so weird, Steve thinks. Talking to a wolf like it's a human, chastising hunters for wounding it with what he thinks is a poisoned bullet. Feeding it its own rations by hand, during a harsh winter, no less.
Whatever plan is behind this: Steve doesn't understand it. But he's too weak to think much about it, because as soon as the plate is empty and his stomach comfortably full, Steve sinks back under.
He dreams of soft hands stroking his fur, and of someone softly singing to him the lullaby that his mother used to sing to him when he was a pup and woke up from a nightmare.
It becomes routine as Steve's body fights off the effects of the silver bullet.
The man, whose name was Eddie, as Steve learned during one of the many times he was sort of talking to himself, fed him meat by hand, and sometimes broth and potatoes. Every two days he would also dress his wound, always clicking his tongue at the state of it and muttering about asshole hunters.
Eddie always talked while tending to Steve, at first telling him how his body was healing and what Eddie was doing to help him. But after a while, he began to tell Steve about his days and his chores, regaling Steve with tales of his adventures while gathering firewood or preparing meals for them. It was surprisingly comforting to listen to Eddie talk, his stories always funny and dramatic, with a hint of self-deprecation.
It didn't make sense to Steve why Eddie was doing all this until one night he started talking about his uncle, who had gone to the city to find work to better support them and hadn't been home in months.
It was then that Steve realized that Eddie was lonely.
He'd been alone in that cabin in the middle of the woods for months until he found Steve lying in a ravine and carried him home.
Steve was the closest thing Eddie had to a companion in months.
Knowing that eased some of the apprehension he felt toward Eddie, because it seemed that as long as the man didn't know that Steve wasn't an ordinary wolf, he didn't have to be afraid of him.
Three weeks after Steve first woke up in Eddie's cabin, he manages to get up on weak legs and take a few tentative steps before collapsing again.
Eddie is there to catch him and by then his hands are welcome on Steve's body.
They are always gentle with Steve, stroking his fur and snout, scratching behind his ears just right. Eddie touches him all the time now, and Steve has no idea how he feels about it.
That's not entirely true, he has an inkling of what the warmth means that spreads through his body when Eddie lies down behind him on the mattress he'd put in front of the fireplace so Steve would be warm while he healed. Every night, Eddie would bury his face in Steve's fur right at his neck, a vulnerable place only close members of a pack were ever allowed to put their snouts, and stroke Steve's side and belly with gentle hands until they both drifted off to sleep.
Everything smelled of Eddie. Steve smelled of Eddie.
And Eddie had begun to smell of Steve.
It made his inner wolf purr with satisfaction, and that was such a phenomenally bad idea.
That's why Steve is trying to get back on his feet as quickly as possible, so he can leave before these feelings that have started to grow in his heart get any worse.
Eddie is human.
Humans are not to be trusted. They are not safe.
But Eddie feels safe.
Worse, he is starting to feel a lot like mate, and Eddie has no idea what that even means.
"Careful, Koda. You're still healing. There's no rush, y'know. You can stay here as long as you want, okay? This is your home now, too."
Steve whines softly at the ache in Eddie's voice and licks his neck and face to comfort him. The wet tongue probably tickles because it makes Eddie laugh, and he buries his face in the thick fur at the front of Steve's neck.
And Steve just lets him, lets him press his mouth against his throat while he nuzzles behind Eddie's ear and breathes in his scent.
Steve is fucked.
It all comes to a head a few weeks later.
Steve is now back on his feet and uses his new mobility to follow Eddie around and keep him company while he does his chores, often dozing next to him while he cooks or chops wood or sorts through their rapidly dwindling supplies. Soon Eddie will have to go hunting to keep them stocked with meat, and Eddie hates the thought. He doesn't want to hurt another creature.
That's why Steve decides to go hunting for his human. He can provide for him.
A week later, he leaves in the middle of the night, carefully slipping out of Eddie's arms around him and trotting through the little door that Eddie built into his door so that Steve could relieve himself whenever he needed to.
It goes better than Steve expected, his muscles still not back to where they used to be, but stronger and faster than he would have thought after weeks of lying around. He follows the tracks of a deer for almost an hour before he finally finds it. The hunt itself is short, the wind comes from the right direction, and the deer clearly doesn't sense him until it's too late.
Steve kills it as quickly and painlessly as possible, sure that Eddie would want him to. He thinks he would do anything to make Eddie happy.
When Steve comes back from the woods, he's dragging the deer's body with his snout, wishing he could just shift back into his human body because it would be so much easier with his hands. But the shift takes a lot out of an already weakened body, and he can't risk it. In a few weeks it will be as easy as breathing again, he's sure of that, but right now it could be a serious setback in his recovery.
He can already see the cabin through the trees when he hears Eddie's voice calling for him. He sounds panicked and Steve immediately drops his prey to run to his mate.
Eddie is not even wearing a jacket, his breath coming out in clouds of condensed air as he stumbles through the glittering snow, calling for Koda.
He calls for his wolf with panicked tears in his voice and Steve barrels into him without a second's hesitation. Eddie falls to the ground, his arms full of Steve, his hands clutching Steve's fur as if he's afraid this is a dream and Steve will disappear again.
"Koda? Oh my God, where the hell have you been? I was worried sick. I thought you just disappeared." Eddie sits up, his arms never letting go of where they are wrapped around Steve, and Steve can smell the tears on his face. He carefully licks them away as more and more follow. "Please don't leave me, please, please, please," Eddie keeps begging him, his whole body shaking and Steve wants to shift so badly. He wants to take his mate in his arms and hold him, soothe his pain and fear and promise him that he'll never leave him.
So even though he knows better, he does.
One moment Eddie is holding a big, brown wolf in his arms, and the next he is holding a very human, very naked man in his lap.
If Steve wasn't scared to death of how Eddie will react, he would laugh at the high-pitched squeal Eddie lets out when he realizes what has happened.
"Hi," Steve says, waving at Eddie with fluttering fingers. Not his smoothest moment, but to be fair, this isn't how he usually approaches someone he's attracted to. For once he is usually wearing a lot more clothes.
"Uhhh, hi?" Eddie asks, stunned. "Who... Wait, not important right now. Where is my wolf? My Koda. I just got him back."
Steve is pretty sure that Eddie must be in shock and not thinking clearly, but it warms his heart how attached he is to Steve's wolf. He hopes he can get him to like his human side just as much.
Deciding it's best to just come clean with Eddie, Steve exclaims, "Tada," and does a very silly imitation of jazz hands.
Eddie just blinks at him with big eyes.
Okay, Plan B it is, Steve thinks. "I'm him. I'm Koda. Or, well, no, I'm Steve, but you couldn't know that. But, um, yeah, I'm your wolf?" Steve cringes at the your, but it's too late to take it back, and besides, he really wants to be Eddie's wolf.
He wants to be Eddie's everything.
"I knew it!"
Eddie's sudden outburst startles Steve so much that he almost falls off Eddie's lap before Eddie's arms tighten around him.
"Sorry, sorry. It's just... my mom told me about wolves that could turn into humans. She used to tell me stories about how they used to be the protectors of villages and towns, the friends and companions of humans, before some humans turned against them, jealous of the admiration and status they had with the villagers, and drove them away. Mama said that when a wolf chooses you as a mate, you are blessed for life. She always wanted to meet one of you."
Steve knows about Eddie's mother, another story he told Steve under the protective cover of night as they lay on their mattress, Steve's fur soaking up Eddie's tears as he talked about losing his mother when he was only ten.
"Aren't you afraid of me?" Steve still has to ask, his heart beating as fast as the wings of a bird taking flight.
Eddie looks at him as if the thought had never occurred to him. "Afraid of you? Koda... I mean, Stevie, can I call you Stevie?" at Steve's nod Eddie continues, "Are you going to hurt me?"
Now it's Steve's turn to look at Eddie in disbelief. "What? No! Never! Eddie, I promise I would never hurt you. I just thought that you..."
"That I would hurt you if I found out what you are?" Eddie asks quietly, his thumb stroking Steve's collarbone.
"Yes," Steve admits in a low voice. "But not anymore."
"No?" He sounds so hopeful when he asks this, so trusting in the way he holds Steve in his arms, even after learning of Steve's true nature. Steve smiles down at the man who saved him, who tended to him, who cared for him.
His human.
His mate, if Eddie will let him. Steve thinks he might.
"No, I feel safe with you."
Eddie's answering smile is blinding, and Steve has to kiss him, right here in the snow, sitting buck naked in Eddie's lap, the morning sun bathing them in its hopeful light.
Thinking about babygirl Steve and how he was somehow justâŠallowed to roam around looking like that in the mall.
Thinking about Steve babygirlifying himself on purpose, knowing full well what heâs doing.
Thinking about Steve being given a uniform after he gets through his Scoops interview, even though he doesnât start âtil next week. About how it feels ridiculous when he slips on the shorts and shirt and looks critically in the mirror.
About how he tilts his head, pauses. Considers his reflection and squints his eyes just a bit so he can ignore the awkward fit and the way the stupid hat flattens his hair. Because, other than a few flaws, the uniform actually looksâŠkind of good on him.
Now, I love a Steve who doesnât always realise heâs being flirted with, or the effect he has on people. But that boy knows, letâs be real. Just like he knows the sort of image he makes dressed up like this.
Itâs Eddieâs own fault, really, that things turned out this way (he says, as if heâs in any way displeased with the outcome).
Itâs just that once theyâd started dating, once Steve had realized that his touch was invited and welcomed, heâd become so open with his affection, whenever and wherever he could be.
He holds Eddieâs hand, he hugs him âhello,â he kisses him âgoodbyeâ (and, frankly, any other time he thinks he can get away with it), heâs always pulling Eddie up close to him when they sit (or pulling Eddie right into his lap, or, once heâs been assured that heâs not that heavy, sitting himself on Eddieâs lap), heâs forever orbiting in Eddieâs space, and Eddie is living for it.
Heâs never had anyone love him so openly before, so proudly. Itâs fucking marvelous.
Naturally, Eddie starts looking for ways to return the favor; little ways to let Steve know that heâs just as loved.
And it starts with his car keys.
He asks Steve to grab them for him because theyâre still on the counter and Eddieâs already halfway out the door. When Steve hands them over, Eddie makes sure to take a moment to lean in and peck him on the cheek with a quick, âThanks, babe.â
And after catching the pleased, pink flush that spreads over Steveâs cheeks at that, thereâs no way Eddie isnât going to do it again.
After Steve brings him a beer the next time theyâre watching a movie together, Eddie gives him a quick kiss on the cheek and tells him, âThanks, angel.â
After Steve pays for dinner on date night (they take turns, no complaints, no skipping, no matter how much one or the other might argue I can get it this time), Eddie takes a furtive glance around the empty restaurant parking lot before pressing his lips to Steveâs cheek with a quiet, âThank you, baby.â
After Steve brings him the towel heâd left inside the next time the kids are over to use the pool, he gets a big kiss on the cheek and a saccharine, âThank you, sweetheartâ (at which most of the kids groan and boo about PDA, which results in Eddie flipping them off while Steve kisses him full on the mouth, because they are mature adults).
If Eddie had stopped to think about it, he might have recognized it as a sort of (benign!) conditioning. He doesnât actually stop to think about it, however, until one afternoon when Steve brings him lunch while heâs working on a campaign.
âThanks, Steve,â Eddie mumbles, barely glancing up from his notebook.
It takes him almost a full minute to realize that Steve hasnât moved â and only then because Steve pointedly clears his throat.
Pulled from his plotting stupor, Eddie blinks up at Steve, who is staring right back at him. âWhat?â
âForgetting something?â Steve asks, glancing down at the sandwich and chips heâd brought in.
Eddie frowns, thinking back. âI said thank you.â
Steve raises his brows, clearly unimpressed that Eddie is still missing some kind of point, and then he tilts his head just slightly up and to the left, baring the side of his face.
Eddie stares, uncomprehending, for moment longer beforeâ âOh, shit, right!â
He pops up out of his chair and presses a kiss to Steveâs cheek, then another, and another, until Steveâs smiling at him and trying not to laugh.
âSorry, darlinâ,â Eddie murmurs against his skin. âWonât happen again.â
âBetter not,â Steve chides, but from the way his arms wind over Eddieâs shoulders, pulling him closer as he turns his head to catch him in a proper kiss, Eddie can tell that heâs far from displeased.

When Eddie sees her, sitting on the picnic table, her feet shuffling back and forth on the bench like that one dancing scene from The Breakfast Club (so what if he went to go see it? It's a good flick!), he almost runs back the way he came.
Because here's the thing about Robin Buckley.
While Eddie's status at the bottom of the social ladder is guaranteed, what with his hobbies and his music and his ability to irritate even the most patient of individuals (bar Uncle Wayne, blessed be the man), he doesn't fuck with Robin Buckley.
She was never anything to write home or gossip over coffee about, not when Eddie started his first senior year or even before that, when he was just starting up Hellfire and went to band to see if he could recruit any lonesome souls. Robin wasn't interested then, more keen to avoid his eye and fumble with her uniform, so he chalked her up as another lost to the masses.
Then all the shit with the Zombie Boy (a killer moniker, wouldn't that make for an awesome song title?! But he doesn't know if it'd be like, copyright infringement or whatever) went down and he got a little more protective of his circle, cloaking them from the unmerciful eyes of the Hawkins mob, pushing back when shit hit the fan and that mob tried impeding on his people.
And it worked! Nobody messed with him or his, not enough to be met with more than a snort - hell, even that asshole Hargrove stayed away after Eddie pulled a knife on him in the school parking lot. He wonders if all that wild anger the dick had to choke down went into the fight he had with -
Anyways.
Point is that Eddie knows his place, and thanks to a little intimidation and a lot of false-turned-true-confidence, nobody messes with him.
The thing is - he still doesn't mess with Robin Buckley.
Like he said, she was always another one of the masses to him, and he never expected any different.
But then something happened to her.
Some people say that she got trapped in the mall fire and it burned half her face off, she's just wearing enough makeup to cover it up, but it messed with her head.
Other people say she was always a little - uh, airheaded, he'll say, to be polite - and the Starcourt fire just made it more obvious, burned through the façade she'd wear in public.
One or two voices whisper that she's being haunted, that when she laughs to herself in the silence of the classroom, it's because of the spirits of Starcourt's casualties that lurk in her shadow.
(That last one was Jeff actually, and Eddie has to hand it to him for the poetic imagery.)
Any way he hears it, Eddie's instincts go red alert, telling him to give Robin a wide berth in the hallways, to avoid eye contact for longer than a single moment, to ignore her quiet snickers every time he ties his hair up.
So yeah, when he's about to head to his favourite picnic table and finds wacky Robin Buckley laughing to herself as the leaves around the table kick up without a hint of wind in the air, he almost turns around and shoves himself back into his van. Eddie Munson may be a freak but he's no -
"Oh, you're here."
He freezes in his steps, glancing back to see Robin smiling thinly at him, one legged crossed over the other as she leans back. Her eyes glaze over for a second before she barks out a laugh, making Eddie jump in place.
"Didn't expect you, to be honest." She tilts her head.
Eddie's throat is too dry. He starts a sentence, backtracking when the leaves stop kicking up and it's just his shaky voice in the silence between the trees. "Well, it is my spot, Buckley."
Her eyes glint and she uncrosses her legs just to spread them, leaning in and staring at Eddie with an untethered expression stretching across her face. "Is it?" Her raspy voice asks.
Blood roars in Eddie's ears. His fingers twitch, and he's ready to run.
"Don't." She orders and he freezes. "We need to talk."
"And what, pray tell," he says, raising his arms out with a confidence he doesn't feel. "Is it that you could ask of me?"
The leaves kick up behind him. He resolutely ignores it.
Sighing, Robin crosses her legs, shuffling back on the table (and they call Eddie a heathen, jeez). She looks to the right, where the leaves are swirling in a mini tornado. Her smile is small, and a little sad.
"We need your help."
Eddie gasps as the leaves kick up ferociously, the wind bites at his fingertips and Robin glares at him, at the chaos around them with eyes like nothing he's ever seen.
"Stop it."
"Wh -"
"I said stop," She glares at him and his jaw clicks shut. "We agreed - yeah, yeah, we did! Stop it, you're scaring him!"
"I -"
"I'd say the grown-ups are talking," Robin cuts him off with an eye-roll. "But someone's being a big baby."
"Look, Buckley -"
"I swear to god," Robin waves a hand towards Eddie. "Either you play nice, or we're never figuring this out! Do you wanna be invisible to everyone forever?!"
There's a heavy silence at that.
No leaves rustling, no wind, no nothing.
It's like the entire forest just went...dead.
Then Eddie feels a brush of something down his hand and he screams.
"Awesome!" Eddie jumps when Robin grabs his arm (when did she leave the table?!), staring at her smile as foul terror quakes his bones. "Don't be afraid, Eddie. We won't hurt you."
A rustle of leaves smack his shin and he shrieks, unable to jump (or run) thanks to Robin's steel grip.
"Well, not physically."
"Buckley, I have never messed with you before," Eddie whispers as the something trails down his hand, shoulders and face. He's frozen in the wake of the touch. "Fellow freaks of Hawkins and all, but -"
Whatever it is, it grips Eddie by the shoulders and his jaw clicks shut. Robin's grasp on his arm tightens and she nods, staring into space.
"Okay, so could you do it?"
Silence. Eddie's heartbeat races.
"Like what?"
The something ghosts over his fingers and he almost whimpers.
"Oh, like this!"
With that, Robin grabs Eddie's hand and takes off one of his rings. Before he can sputter or shout or cry, she replaces it with one of her own.
And then, like he was always there, Steve Harrington appears before his eyes.
A bloodied, ghastly Steve Harrington who's staring right into him.
"Holy shit," Eddie whispers and the spectre grins a sharp, toothy grin.
A Spot in My Life
T | 953 words
Prompt for @steddielovemonth: Love is keeping a spare sweater or blanket in the car because they always get cold
Steve Harrington is a bitch.
It's something that Eddie knew, all through high school, but he had thought that Steve had somehow became a new person- thanks to the Upside Down and constantly almost seeing the world end.
Steve isn't a bad guy, he can admit. He's still trying to keep an eye on everyone, make sure they're ok, even checking in with Eddie in his own way.
But he's very sly about it, hiding it being playful jabs, eye rolls and cocked hips.
It rubs him the wrong way. And it's only made worse by how much Eddie still likes him. It's as if the bitchiness only draws him in more, even as it makes his chest burn with irritation.
He tries to avoid Steve for as long as he can. He knows that finally befriending him like they both want will only end badly, but he knows he can't resist the temptation.
He enjoys the time before as much as he can, reveling in how often Steve will try to corner him so they can hang out, how much he whines and pleads and pushes. He enjoys the illusion that Steve could feel anything for him like he does for Steve.
And, when they finally do hang out, his fears are confirmed.
Steve is amazing. He's funnier than he comes across as at first too. He pays attention to what Eddie says and tries to get him anything he wants.
He's the type of friend that anyone would fight for, Eddie is sure. It explains how he ended up so popular in high school too.
If Eddie had known what Steve is truly like, he'd have been lining up for a scrap of his attention like everyone else.
"They're assholes," Steve explains, when Eddie finally asks about his old lackeys. "Tommy always took shit a step too far. I didn't need them. Probably shouldn't have befriended them in the first place."
"They were your friends," Eddie reminds him.
Steve sighs, leaning back. "Yeah, I guess. Just wish I'd realised sooner, how they were getting."
He never complains about the kids, not genuinely. In the quiet moments, when Steve is honest with an almost painful degree of vulnerability, he talks about how amazing the kids are. He talks about how honored he is to be friends with Dustin.
It only makes Eddies feelings inch ever closer to 'the L word'.
"You should talk to him," Robin suggests. "He really is amazing."
"I know, but... guys that are ok with lesbians still get weird about gay men, you know?"
"Yeah, but Steve isn't like that. Did he ever tell you the full story of how I came out to him?"
"It was after the Russian torture drugs, right?"
"We were in the bathroom, near the cinema. I thought we might have puked it all up, so we decided to test it, ask each other questions. So, I asked him if he was ever in love..."
"Oh... oh no."
"Oh yes. He liked me, told me so, and that's when I came out to him."
"Holy shit, Robin."
"But that's my point. He was a little surprised, sure, but he started making jokes, like, immediately. Didn't phase him at all. He got with it immediately. We're just friends, and that's not a problem for him."
Eddie groans, throwing his head back so it thumps into the wall behind him. "But that just makes him more hot!"
The story plagues his mind, to the point that it's the only thing he can think about when he picks Steve up for their next hang out.
In the dead of winter, Steve feels the cold worse than anyone else that Eddie knows. He runs hot, and the sudden temperature drops brings out the worse in him.
He's shivering when he climbs into Eddie's car.
"Fuck, why isn't your heating on?" He whines.
"It's broke," Eddie reminds him. "It's fine, don't worry."
"Don't worry? I'm gonna get hypothermia, Eddie! I don't want to turn into an ice sc- what is that?"
He takes the blanket that Eddie had reached back to grab, staring at it.
"It's a blanket."
"No shit, I mean... it's yellow."
"Yeah? You like yellow."
"You got this for me?"
"You see anyone else shivering in my van?"
"No, it..." Steve pauses, glancing at Eddie before slowly wrapping the blanket around himself. "Sorry, uh... thank you. This is, um, nice."
"it's nothing."
"It's not. Just- take the thanks, Ed."
"Alright, alright."
They're silent for the rest of the drive. It's so unusual for them that it has Eddie nervous, glancing at Steve every other moment.
When they finally pull to a stop, Eddie turns to Steve, who stays where he is. He stares out the front window for a moment, before turning to face Eddie.
"Are you alright?" Eddie asks.
"Yeah, I am. Enjoying the warmth."
"That all?"
"... yeah."
Eddie rolls his eyes. "You're a terrible liar."
"Wh- hey, I'm a good liar!" He tries to glare, but quickly backs down with a huff. "Alright, fine, but it's really sappy! Don't say I didn't warn you!"
"Oh, no, the horror."
"Shut up. I was just thinking about how, like... there's so many little things in your life that are for me. My tapes in your room, spare clothes in your closet, this blanket... I really appreciate it, man. You've made space for me in your life. It means a lot to me."
"Oh, right. That's... yeah. Of course, Steve. You're always welcome. I love- uh... spending time with you."
"Good. I love spending time with you too."
"Good."
"Great."
Steve's smile is wide and goofy. He's sure that his own is just as cheesy.

steddie childhood friends were on Steve's birthdays, Steve always gave the first cut of his bday cake to Eddie.
It would make Steveâs mom snicker and his dad frown but no one else knew why.
Eddie had wondered from time to time but when they were young he figured it was bff benefits and as it happened every year, it became a natural thing and he stopped thinking about it.
But then, as they grow up... they grow apart. In high school, Eddie realizes he's in love with Steve. Afraid of ruining their friendship, he becomes distant.
In his mind, it's better to keep the memories of Steve than to be rejected by him or worse, hated.
So he acts like they just drifted apart because they were too different.Â
Steve fights him all the way. He tries to keep them together, he tries and tries but eventually, he stops calling, stops coming over.
By senior year they are just acquaintances who politely nod at each other in the hall. Even if Eddieâs heart breaks every single time he looks into Steveâs sad puppy eyes⊠He knows it for the best.
Years later, Eddieâs band has made it, big time. He's the lead guitarist on an increasingly famous metal band and he's happy, he's fine.
So what if he's a little too obsessed with sweet and handsome action movie hero, Steve Harrington? Who is currently being interviewed about his latest movie⊠and Eddie watches every single interview, movie, show, or media Steveâs in.
Heâs torturing himself by watching Steve talk to a reporter who wonât stop flirting himself when something happens that changes Eddie's life forever...Â
While talking about Steveâs heritage on his mom's side, he mentions there's a tradition where sheâs from that you always give the first cut of your birthday cake to the person you love the most.
"And who would Steve Harrington give it to?" the interviewer asks.
"The same person I always gave them to, my best friend. The love of my life," Steve smiles, but the shine doesn't reach his eyes, "I mean I would... if they hadn't stopped showing up to my birthdays" he adds with a self-deprecating chuckle.
Three months later, after begging on his hands and knees to fellow musician and known Steve Harrington 'new' best friend, Robin Buckley for his address, Eddie shows up at Steve's door.

@steddieholidaydrabbles valentine's day prompt | read on ao3
tags: established relationship, fluff
âWait, how is it possible that youâve never had a Valentineâs Day date?â Eddie asks. âYou literally dated Nancy for almost a year.â
Steve shrugs. âShe was sick that week. I had something planned, but had to cancel. I brought her soup and stayed with her for a little while, but it wasn't really the date I had hoped for, you know?â
In the nine months he and Steve have been dating, Steve has gotten better about asking for what he wants, but he still gets weird about some things though. So Eddie knows heâs bringing this up a couple weeks before Valentineâs Day for a reasonâthat even though he canât really say it, he wants to have Valentineâs Day plans with Eddie.
So Eddie starts planning.
His plan starts with breakfast in bed because he doesn't want to take away from whatever Steveâs got planned for dinner â he knows Steve will probably plan something romantic for that.
His suspicions about that are proven right when Steve not so casually asks at the beginning of the week if he has âdinner plans on Saturdayâ as if Eddie wonât remember thatâs the 14th. He plays along and says he doesn't have any plans yet, watching as Steve tries to hide his small smile behind his hand. Heâs so fucking cute.
On Valentineâs Day, Eddie wakes up earlier than he has since he graduated high school and makes his way over to Steve's with his supplies.
He lets himself into the house with the key Steve had given him a few months ago and gets to work quietly making breakfast.
He mixes the waffle mix before he puts a pot of coffee on, fiddling with the coffee machine that heâs only used a few times because Steve tends to wake up before him and already have it brewed.
He hums quietly to himself as he cooks the bacon and eggs, the waffles cooking away in the waffle iron.
When the food is done, he grabs the tray he brought with him and arranges flower petals around the plate. He turns to grab a coffee mug and nearly has a heart attack at the sight of Steve leaning against the archway leading into the kitchen.
âHow long have you been standing there?â he asks, watching as Steve starts to walk forward towards him.
âA few minutes. I woke up and heard something and figured you must be down here,â Steve says, coming to a stop right in front of Eddie. Heâs smiling softly and his eyes are fond and happy and Eddie gets lost in them for a moment before he remembersâ
âWait, no, go back to bed! This is supposed to be breakfast in bed!â
Steve brings a hand up to push Eddie's hair out of his face and cup his neck. He says, âBreakfast in bed is a really sweet idea, but I don't think I could handle the crumbs,â and Eddie groans.
He forgot how much of a stickler Steve is for not having food in his room. âI wanted to be romantic!â he whines, sticking his bottom lip out. Steve swoops in and kisses it softly.
âIt was very romantic to wake up to the smell of coffee and come down here to see you singing and cooking me breakfast,â he says, thumb stroking over Eddie's cheek.
Eddie leans into the touch and says, âGo sit at the table and Iâll bring it to you. At least let me have that.â
Steve smiles wider and says, âOkay, love.â
Eddie pours them both a cup of coffee, adding sugar and cream to Steve's, repeating what heâs seen him do countless mornings, before he finishes plating the food.
He grabs the tray and his own plate and brings them to the dining room, setting the tray in front of Steve.
Heâs about to go sit in the chair next to him when Steve pulls him into his lap.
Eddie laughs and turns in his lap so heâs sitting sideways and not blocking the food.
âYou shaped the eggs like hearts,â Steve says, looking up at Eddie.
Eddie sets his plate down on the table and kisses Steve, soft and slow.
âI think this is the most romantic thing anyoneâs ever done for me,â Steve says when he pulls back. His eyes are shining a little.
âYou deserve romantic things,â Eddie says, kissing Steve's temple. âYou deserve all the romantic things, in fact. I have a whole day of romantic things planned just for you.â
âThe whole day?â Steve asks, surprised.
âWhat, did you think Iâd feed you breakfast and then just leave you alone the rest of the day?â Eddie asks with a playful scoff. âWeâre gonna eat breakfast and then weâre gonna watch the cheesy romantic comedy I rented. Then weâre gonna go to Loverâs Lake and have a picnic in the back of my van. Then weâll come back here and Iâll let you have your way with me before you whisk me off to whatever dinner plans you made.â
Steve has the nerve to look caught out at that last bit. âYou knew?â he asks, mouth pulled into a cringing smile.
âI know you, darling,â Eddie says, grinning at him. âYouâre a romantic.â
âThis is going to be the best Valentineâs Day ever, spending the entire day doing what you planned,â Steve says, nuzzling his nose against Eddieâs jaw. âBut I hope you know Iâm gonna woo you tonight. Sweep you off your feet.â
âOh, are you now? How do you plan on doing that?â Eddie asks.
âItâs a surprise,â Steve says, voice teasing. He picks up his fork to start eating.
Eddie hums. âNo thoughts about the having your way with me part of my plan?â
âOh I have thoughts. Many, many thoughts,â Steve says, leaning up and pressing a kiss to Eddie's jaw. âIâll try not to wear you out before dinner.â
Eddie raises an eyebrow at him. âIâm holding you to that, big boy.â
Eddie doesn't want to be making this call. Literally the last thing he wants to be doing is making this specific phone call, but he'll be damned if he lets his asshole of a roommate get away with this.
After a moment the ringing stops, and a voice says "Hello?"
"Uh, hi, is this Steve?"
"It is, who is this?"
"It's Eddie, Jake's roommate? I got your number from him." Well, from his phone when he'd left it unattended one day, but Steve doesn't need to know the details. "I really, really hate to be making this call, especially the day before Valentine's, but uh. Jake is cheating on you."
The line is silent for a moment before he hears a weak "What?"
Eddie's eyes squeeze shut at the heartbreak he can hear in that single word. He hates that he's doing this, but knows it needs to be done, for Steve's sake.
"I got home from work not too long ago, and heard him with some girl in his room. I took a video, if you want proof, but I just- I thought you deserved to know."
There's a bit of shuffling on Steve's end, along with a soft sniffle. "I, uh. I don't need the video. I believe you. I'm not all that surprised, if I'm honest."
He huffs a laugh, the sound so self-deprecating that it makes Eddie's stomach twist in empathy. "Guess that makes me three-for-three on my long-term partners cheating. I'm starting to wonder what the fuck is wrong with me."
That last part is softer, like Steve was speaking to himself, but Eddie hears it and frowns, because- because Steve is lovely. He can tell that Steve is beautiful inside and out, always kind with just enough sass to make him so fun to be around.
He's always makes sure to talk to Eddie every time he comes over, even if it's just a simple greeting or goodbye, and whenever he cooks at their apartment - because he's a great cook - he always makes enough for Eddie to have some as well.
It feels wrong to hear Steve talk like this, like there's something about him that needs to be fixed. Like his previous partners were right to abuse his love and trust, instead of treating them like the treasures Eddie knows they are.
Before Eddie can speak out to reassure him, the man continues. "Thank you for telling me Eddie. Spending Valentine's alone is gonna suck, but I guess that's better than spending it with someone who doesn't care about me."
"Spend it with me."
Eddie isn't sure where the request comes from, but as soon as it leaves his mouth, it's all he wants.
Steve gives a soft "Huh?" and Eddie repeats it, "Spend it with me. A boy as pretty as you shouldn't be cooped up inside on a day like Valentine's. Let me take you out, try to salvage it for you at least a little."
Steve goes quiet, and for a solid ten seconds, Eddie is sure that he's about to be rejected.
And then Steve says "Jake was supposed to pick me up at 6:30 tomorrow. I'll come by yours at six instead, so I can break up with him before we leave. Is that okay?"
A sigh of relief, and Eddie slumps into the wall behind him. "Sounds perfect, Stevie. Wear something nice, but casual, okay?"
"I can do that. I'll see you tomorrow, Eddie. And thanks again."
Jake comes across Eddie the next evening as he's packing the last of the food into a bag. He's spent the last hour or so getting it ready, making sure it's all perfect even though it's nothing too complicated.
A meat and cheese plate with some fancy crackers, a jar of the pickled asparagus he's recently become addicted to, a bowl of diced fruit and a box of fancy chocolates he'd splurged on.
He'd even dropped money on a bouquet of roses, and he already has a few comfy blankets and pillows packed into the back of the van. Everything perfect and ready to go. When Jake sees his preparations, he lets out a low whistle.
"Wow, Eddie. Trying to impress someone?"
Eddie shrugs, trying to be as nonchalant as possible. "Yep. It's our first date, so I want it to be special. Didn't wanna go the usual, boring, fancy restaurant route."
He's sure that's what Jake had planned for himself and Steve, and it's confirmed by the way his nose wrinkles. "There's nothing wrong with spending money on your date, Eddie. If you have the money to spend, that is."
Jesus Christ, Eddie can't wait to move out of this fucking place, and away from this fucking asswipe.
"Anyway, I've gotta go pick up Steve soon, and I'm planning on bringing him back here tonight, so maybe see if you can crash with your date, yeah?"
"Sure thing-" Eddie replies, though he's interrupted by the sound of a knock ringing through the apartment. He grins wide, knowing exactly who it is. "That must be my date. Can you grab that while I finish up here?"
Jake rolls his eyes but complies, and Eddie freezes in place, not daring to make a sound so he can hear whatever interaction is about to happen.
The door opens, and he hears Jake's confused "Steve? What are you doing here? I'm supposed to be-"
"Yeah, we're not doing anything anymore. Ever again, actually."
God, Steve sounds so bitchy, and Eddie fucking loves it. He grabs the bag of food and the bouquet of roses from the counter, glad that he got dressed beforehand, and makes his way to the entry.
"What are you saying, Steve?"
"I'm saying that we're over, Jake. Maybe you can call the girl you fucked last night and take her to dinner instead."
Eddie turns the corner in time to see Jake's stunned expression, clearly not expecting Steve to throw that at him. He takes a moment to bask in the fire burning behind hazel eyes, until they slide to him and that fire vanishes, replaced with something sparkling and delighted.
"Hi, Eddie," Steve says, his demeanor changing like the flip of a switch, and Eddie beams. He steps closer and offers the bouquet of roses, along with a "Happy Valentine's, Stevie."
The money Eddie spent on the flowers was worth it to see the blush that floods Steve's face as he reaches out to take them.
"Oh, thank you. That's really sweet of you."
"What the fuck is happening right now?"
Eddie and Steve both turn to look at a very petulant and confused Jake, and Steve just smiles. "Well, you just got dumped, and my Valentine is about to take me on a date."
It takes a moment, but something must finally click, because Jake's face goes red with rage. Eddie just grabs Steve's arm, guiding him out of the apartment before the man can actually do something.
"So what's the plan?" Steve asks as he takes Eddie's hand, lacing their fingers together as Eddie leads him to his van.
"Well, uh. The next town over still has a drive in theater, and they're showing some old romance movies tonight. The drive to get there is pretty nice, and we'll actually have some time to talk, and then- I have some blankets and pillows in the back of the van, and I brought food so we can do a picnic during the movies. I mean, if- if that sounds good to you."
Steve's eyes are sparkling again as Eddie rambles, and he squeezes their hands in delight. "That sounds perfect, Eds."
By the time Eddie gets home late that night, he's learned two things:
The first is that Steve had already been debating on breaking up with Jake before this whole fiasco, but the thing stopping him was that he actually likes being around Eddie, and he thought wanting to hang out with his ex-boyfriend's roommate would be too weird.
The second thing Eddie's learned is that Steve's smile tastes like dark chocolate and sunshine, and kissing him might just be Eddie's new favorite hobby.
(Eddie does eventually show the video to Steve, just to reassure him that he didn't break them up so Eddie could date him instead. The only comment Steve makes is "She's definitely faking, his dick game isn't that good.")
âSo you doing the usual tonight?â Robin asks as she digs into her scrambled eggs. âTake out and Terminator?â
Itâs Steve and Eddieâs Valentineâs tradition. Born during their last year of high school, both minimally bitter about being alone on V-day, getting high ordering take out and watching Terminator for shits and giggles. Neither of them really likes Terminator that much, but they like the tradition. Like each otherâs company, like getting giggly, and raising the middle finger to the commercialization of love.
Itâs not that Steve doesnât like the idea of flowers and candlelight dinner and cards and coffee in bed and giving each other thoughtful gifts. He had tried to do it when he had dated Nancy, but she hadnât been the type for it. Sure, it would be nice to have a traditional Valentineâs day. But his tradition with Eddie is nice too. Any time he gets to spend with Eddie is a nice time. Itâs why Steve feels a tad bad.Â
âNope, loverboy here has other plans tonight,â Eddie says before Steve can even open his mouth. He claps Steve on the back and while Steve usually welcomes every single touch from Eddie, this one feels weird. Forced and not natural. Distant. Itâs the kind of touch your dudebro friends give you at the gym. Itâs not the kind of touch that lies in every caress of Eddieâs fingertips, or the press of palms, the gentle brush of cold, pale skin, against freckled, warm arms. âStevie here scored a date with dreamy Ted.â
Eddie sounds like the host of an old school dating game show, like he is about to read out that the candidate behind door number three likes long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners and world peace. Itâs something he would do, Eddie loves doing voices and acting silly just to tease Steve. And maybe itâs just because Steve knows itâs a bad day, but it feels off.Â
Everything feels off, like someone moved all the furniture in their kitchen half an inch to the side. It still looks the same and everything is roughly where it used to be, but when Steve moves, the corner of the kitchen counter is digging harshly into his hip.Â
Robin looks up from her eggs and frowns.Â
âYouâre going on a date with Mikeâs dad?â
âEw, god no,â Steve gags, âplease do not make me think about Ted Wheeler in a romantic way.â
I finally read the three books about the lesbian necromancers in space, and what can I say... Don't know what's deader me after reading or the books themselves.

Vecna is dead. The Upside Down is gone. A thing of the past, really. Except... it's not, of course it's not. Enough time goes by for things to start settling down. But. There's always a but.
Steve disappears and no one notices. But not because no one cared. It's not the case of Steve the Rich Jock. Of Steve the Friendless. Of Steve with Big House and No Parents.
No one notices because no one remembers him ever existing.
Robin feels like a part of her is missing, like there's an itch she can't quite scratch. Her shifts at the bookstore that she owns seem dull and her eyes keep sliding over to the doors like she's waiting for someone to enter. Her flat feels cold. There's an empty room across the hall.
There's a guy Eddie's kissing in the back alley and it makes him feel nothing at all. There's an S tattoed on his hip. He doesn't remember getting it. He must've been drunk. Or high. He keeps wondering why he stayed so close to Hawkins despite all the trouble it brought him. Must've been Wayne, even though his uncle has more than once declared himself ready to move on.
Dustin mourns an older brother he never had. He stylizes his hair but can't remember where he learnt it from when Suzie asks. The Scoops Troops has always been three people; him, and Erica, and Robin, but no, that doesn't sound right. How would they get past that one guard? And those demodogs in '84? Jonathan? Nancy? They were busy with Will, weren't they?
Nancy hates pools. She can't remember why. There was a party of some sort and Barb...Barb got sucked into the Hell that lives and breathes under Hawkins. But...why would they go to a party in the first place? It makes no sense.
And so on, and so on.
Until, one day, Eddie and Robin stumble upon an abondanoed car in the middle of a forgotten road by the forrest. Keys still inside. And a bat full of nails on the driver's seat.
STWG Daily Prompt: missing an important phone call
âTommy!â his mom calls, shouting from downstairs. He can hear her, muffled through his closed door but he can still hear her all the same.
âWhat?â he calls back, tilting his head towards the door, but not making any motions to move. Heâs wearing sweatpants, reading a sports mag, and pretending his family doesnât exist. Pretending his homework doesnât exist. Heâs fucking chilling.
His mom doesnât respond. Because of fucking course she doesnât. If he could hear her, she could absolutely hear him but whatever. Sheâs the one with selective hearing in this family, no matter what she says about teenage boys and him hearing only what he wants to hear. Whatever. Groaning, he throws his magazine down, heaves himself off of his bed, and leaves his room.
Throws the door open, and shouts down the hall, hoping the sound echoes down the stairs. âWhat?â
âGet down here!â She hollers back, Tommy stomping down the stairs with a roll of his eyes. Heâs barely been home and sheâs already nagging him. Dinnerâs not ready, is nowhere near it in fact â dad isnât even home. So what the hell does she want from him?
âFine,â Tommy grumbles, letting his annoyance radiate off of him. He finds his mom in the kitchen, glass of wine in her hands, pointing at the phone. He raises his eyebrows at her, widening his eyes as if to say Iâm here now, what do you want? Because thereâs no way sheâd let him get away with saying that out loud.
"Message for you,â she says, waving her hands in the general direction of the answering machine, before leaving the kitchen.
âWho the hellâs ringing me?â He asks, speaking aimlessly at her retreating back. She doesnât answer. Whatever, itâs fine. Probably just Carol, ringing as soon as she got home or something. Itâs not like he has anyone else calling him on the regular. He turns the volume nob, rewinds the tape, and presses play.
Tommy sighs as he listens to the clunk of the machine, the gentle whirring of the tape. And then the message starts.
âHey Tommy, Itâs Steve, um, but you probably knew that.â The message starts, and Tommy freezes. Feels himself halting in place, right there in the middle of the kitchen. They hadnât spoken in months. Not since all that shit with the Wheeler chick last year. When she ruined everything. He forces himself to inhale, to breathe again, and listens to the rest of Steveâs message. âIâm just uh, ringing from the hospital. Itâs not bad, Iâm mostly under observation.â
Fucking hell. How the hell did Tommy miss this? They didnât speak at school, not unless Tommy was teasing him. Poking and prodding and aiming for a reaction. To see a hint of the old Steve. His Steve. But Tommy had eyes. He was watching Steve. They were best friends since they were fucking kids, he couldnât just drop that. Not like Steve dropped him and Carol.
âI probably shouldnât be calling.â Steve continues, his voice wavering but clear. Almost anxious. Tommyâs breath hitches in his chest again. They used to call all the time, were constantly hanging out, and now Steve shouldnât be calling him. Itâs fine. Tommyâs fine. âIâm uh, in the hall right now, and the nurses donât want me out of bed. But I wanted to⊠I just⊠I missedâŠâ
Steveâs voice trails off. Gets softer, just breathes into the phone. If Tommy listens carefully, he swears he can hear Steveâs voice hitch. In that achingly familiar way when he tries to hold his emotions back. Tommy knows that sound. Steve clears his throat.
âI needed to call you, I think.â Steve continues, and Tommy ignores the way his hands starts shaking. Clenches them into fists, and shoves his hands into his pockets. The only one home is his mom, but he canât let her see him like this. Fuck, did she listen to the message? Sheâll ask him questions, Tommy knows she will and heâs really not ready to hear them. âMy parents donât get home âtil next week, and my brain feels like mud, and I just, um, yeah. Missed you.â
The beep of the answering machine cuts off any goodbye Steve would have had.
Tommy inhales, lets the air cool his lungs, steady his heart. Scrubs a hand across his nose and turns away from the answering machine. Wipes his hands across his stinging eyes. Heâs still shaking, he absently realises, as he lets Steveâs words wash over him. Heâs in the hospital, is fucking stuck there alone while his parents travel all over the fucking show and he missed Tommy. Even if he still thinks Tommy is a miserable asshole.
Steeling himself, he snatches his keys off of the bench, shoves his feet into his sneakers, and storms out the front door.
