jiah thinks sheโs progressing steadily and at an okay pace as it is going. she has been with lgc for a little more than eight months, and while some skills have improved nicely, there are others she has been neglecting for some reasons. either because she doesnโt want to focus on certain specialties (like rapping) or because sheโs straight-up scared sheโll suck big time (like dancing).
she didnโt mind the โpunishmentsโ since january. not until march came up, and they had to start working on their weakest skills, which meant jiah had to face that putting off dancing classes might not have been the smartest choice. โhereโs the thing, though,โ jiah finally straightens up her after stretching. she speaks quietly not to bother the other trainees and also because she wants to avoid anyone else overhearing them. โideally, i know weโre supposed to know how to dance well. howeverโฆโ she lifts her finger and takes a dramatic pause before continuing, โi wish i could debut just as a singer. no synchronized dances or anything. i could be like younmin sunbaenim. i would be the happiest, then.โ
until stella had moved to seoul, dance had never been on the "agenda." she felt it in her very bones now, sweat running down the curve of her spine as she bent, bowed, twisted, until her body felt as though it was moving more naturally with the music just barely drowning out the squeaks of their sneakers on the wooden floor.
jiah was welcome company as stella stretched this weakest muscle of her performance repertoire. the two had connected quickly when they'd realized they'd shared a native language, and although sometimes stella wished she had a volume button that controlled the other's energy levelsโ ใ คใ ค"i'm listening," stella piped up even before jiah finished describing the ideal situation. they somehow always managed to be on the same wave length when it came to their careers, their goals, the way they navigated the standards and rules and compliance to them. ใ คใ ค"if i really thought i could get away with sitting on a bar stool or at a piano and crooning, i wouldn't be here," stella snorted out a laugh, pushing herself up from where she'd been resting between their practice. ใ คใ ค"i hated dance when i first got here. don't mind it s'much, now. would just be more fun if it was natural for me," she drawled in lazy english, slipping into the comfortable with someone who understood. "how do you think they decide who has to do the intense choreography and who doesn't? is it a skill thing, or a charisma thing?"

haley can feel eyes on her even still, day in and day out. she wonders when it will stop, when people will stop whispering when she walks by and trying to make assumptions about what she could have done to be punished in front of the entire group of trainees and lose her spot at a chance to debut with legacy's new girl group. she hasn't felt this way since high school and the more she stresses out the harder it is to eat, to breathe, to exist.
there are at least a few people who are okay with being seen talking to her, one of those being stella, a fellow american. haley hasn't eaten yet today, making shoveling snow a particularly difficult task. the sun is warm even though the air is still bitter cold, making doing any kind of physical activity outside miserable. but no one will hear haley complaining, not once. legacy wants haley to believe she deserves this and the more she is branded with that red a, the more she does.
"i think we're almost done," haley says quietly, her eyes looking around for any managers or company staff, paranoid that they're around every corner now. "i didn't think it snowed this much in seoul. we've been at it all morning. it's a nice day at least," she says shielding her eyes from the sunlight with her hand as she looks around the street. she looks back at stella with a small smile. "right?"
the weather certainly wasn't suited for this sort of manual labor, and stella was realizing now that the way she'd been carrying the snow shovel was putting an ache in her lower back that was sure to linger. everyone else's lingering gaze, fixing on her only by proxy after she and haley had agreed to do this work together, was a different kind of ache. it curled around stella's stomach and made her think, was the public lashing not enough? leave her alone. stella had always liked haley well enough, though perhaps should have tried talking to her more becauseโ ใ คใ คใ คใ คholy fuck, how do i make her feel better now? stella understood that this was a cultural gap, and one that she hadn't grown into yet. in her mind's eye, it was silly to allow people to have the particular standards of 'appropriateness' that they were held toโ maybe haley was the same, and that was why she now found herself in this position, looking in stella's view like a statue of the longsuffering madonna as she blocked the sun from her eyes and offered a small smile. ใ คใ ค"yeah," stella's own smile came slowly, just a quirk at the corner of her mouth as she wiped sweat away from her hairline. despite the cool january air coloring their faces red, stella could see the pallor of haley's skin and offered, ใ คใ ค"you doing okay, there?" ใ คใ คใ คใ คoh, my god. stella. you idiot. ใ คใ ค"i mean, you know. today. let's make sure we got that curb and then, we could get something to eat?"
he smiles as she grabs his arm and pulls him into the nearest club. "you got it," he says giving her a fond smile and moving his way past the bouncer and into the thriving, loud pulsing club. "what d'ya want?" he wonders as he leans against the bar and making eye contact with the bartender, keeping her hand in his so that other's know to back off while they're together.
ใ คใ คi knew i should have googled cocktails before coming here. her knowledge was limited enough to make her lack confidence in the drink names she did think that she knew. stella took one look at the bartender, then sejun's face, and back again before calling out, ใ คใ ค"let's do a shot together. um, a green tea shot? can you order it?" it was a drink she'd had back in the college town in california, and stella was now relying on sejun to bridge that wide communication gap ( doesn't drink, hasn't ordered any drinks in korean ) between her and the man standing behind the bar. thank god he was able to. the drinks were fast, as one could expect of a place that managed to stay as busy as this one. stella manhandled sejun's arm to lock elbows with herself, so that their arms were linked when they lifted the glasses to their mouths. ใ คใ ค"you take a shot like this, i swear. my friends back home showed me." it was a lot harder to pull off with someone taller than said back home friends, but stella threw the shot back (and only made a slight face ), dropped the glass onto the bartop, and โ ใ คใ ค"come on, we didn't come all this way not to dance." maybe the liquid courage was instantaneous, like a placebo. taking ahold of sejun's hand again, she pulled him into the mix of bodies on the dance floor, the crowd packed almost too tightly for her to identify the features on any of the faces around them, giving her hope that they were under the guise of anonymity as well. ใ คใ ค"i can barely hear myself think!" she damn near shouted at sejun over the bass, tipping her head back to fix him with a toothy grin.

the camera smash cuts to stella moaning and groaning about the extra workโ she is never less of a socialist than when someone else's mess means more on her plate. and now, for the notes on plots that could be related to this:
for the weakest skills training (1/2): stella's weakest skills are dance (#1) and performance, with singing being a close tie but less a priority since rap is already at 50. korean could also be chosen.
for the volunteer work (1/1): stella would work hard, and wouldn't show a negative face to any of the people they interact with, but would probably be a crank behind the scenes.

having finished her final look, minji spritzed a hint of perfume on her wrists, before putting her black boots on and heading out the front door. sheโd put on the black jeans to match with stella, along with a white off-the-shoulder button up and a black bomber jacket. she exited the doors of her dorm building, her pink and white purse in tow (which was quite a contrast from the rest of her outfit, albeit more in-line with her personality).ย
โstella!โ she walked over to the trainee, ready to have fun, but also feeling a bit nervous. she wasnโt used to going out to experience nightlife like this, even if it was just to a low-key lounge. what do you even do at a lounge? she was going to find out. anyways, she didnโt plan to do anything serious while she was there. she may have a drink, but just one. and she was definitely not going to talk to any boys while she was out. yet, anyways.
โi mean... as ready as iโll ever be...โ she lifted her leg to play with the backs of her low chunky heels, before she began to walk towards the metro station nearby.ย โso...โ her voice trailed off, not knowing exactly what to say, but wanting to avoid any awkward silence.ย โwhat do you think youโll do there? are you planning on drinking?โ
drinking. could stella remember the last time they'd had more than a casual sip over dinner? their eyes flicked to minji, over what she was wearing, down to the shoes clacking on the sidewalk as they approached the station platformโ was she going to drink? would it be rude to drink if minji wasn't? or, vice versa, rude not to if the other was planning on it? god, this was probably why neither of them had been particularly successful in 'getting out.' ใ คใ ค"i'm going to drink," stella finally announced, perhaps too resolutely. ใ คใ ค"at least one glass. maybe they'll have music playing? it's not like, a club," because that would have probably been too much, "but, i dunnoโ we have some drinks, maybe find a karaoke, pick snacks up and head home?" two slow blinks and a cock of her head later, and stella was realizing it sounded like she was making all of the plans. ใ คใ ค"what did you want to do? what sounds fun?" the train arrived just then, and stella wrapped her fingers gently around minji's forearm so as not to lose her amongst the evening crowd as they boarded. head down, eyes politely on the scuffed toes of their boots, they felt a sudden bubble of laughter rise up in their chest and leaned in to whisper, ใ คใ ค"i can't believe we're actually doing this."
Awareness came in short bursts that faded before he could embrace them and grasp reality. He felt the ground shift around Stellaโs presence, and in his delusions, in the colours that swirled and the dark that consumed them, Minkyu might have thought he was flying or falling. But, even in his tired state, Stella standing before him was too obvious to ignore.
He was still smiling, with his gaze dropping to his fingers, which he wrung together, hooked and weaved into delicate embraces that he quickly broke. There wasnโt really supposed to be guilt or regrets, he thought.
Each decision they made was conscious ( it was, wasnโt it? ), and perhaps the breakdown came too late; maybe none of them had been preparing for this moment. Either way, he was here, she was there, and to start pointing fingers and taking responsibility was ludicrous.ย
A fun night between two adults should not have been anything to be ashamed of, โฆright?ย
โWhat do you mean, what am I here for? Iโm here for etiquette class, duh. Just like you.โ His eyes shot up as he thought, his eyebrows furrowed, and his lips pushed forward as though about to pout. โIโm still stuck in this building and have not yet moved to Legacy Agency. Iโm afraid youโre stuck with me for a little longer. Is this a problem?โ
her face lit up red, teeth biting down on her inner cheeks, before she was even conscious of the fact that she was doing it. ใ คใ คno shit, she thought to herself. their schedules had usually overlapped for classes like thisโ ones that crossed the border between their two interests. now forcing her to cross the invisible border built between them.
ใ คใ ค"right. no, i knew thโ of course it's not a problem," and the words felt like guilt curling around her tongue, the edges of her teeth, settling high in her throat. stella glanced down at her watch, and then exhaled in a huff. there was still a bit of time before they needed to go listen to someone teach them about how to behave nicely for the cameras, which meant they possibly had enough time to start getting things off their (stella's) chest. ใ คใ ค"hey, minโ" their eyes met (because she finally looked up from the floor), and stella had to stop herself from giving into the sneaking desire to avoid this. it was easy to let memories of how the last time they'd seen each other had gone, and to feel again that sensation of, what if he doesn't even want to see me right now? it was harder to accept that stella didn't like how the present felt. she wanted to be normal, again. a thousand benign questions came to mind, and she knew none of them would get to the heart of it. ใ คใ ค"how have you been?" stella took the coward's way out, anyway.

it didnโt go through. sympathetic color suddenly rose in stellaโs face, because theyโd been there more than once, with a card declining. ใ คใ คmaybe all those fancy clothes are from the company? maybe he just carries himself like that? damn, iโve been such an assholeโ

but before stella could make a plan to offer an out for the sake of his pride, jinyoung was already pulling out cash. a lot of it. all large bills of it. stella couldnโt help it, it was just so ridiculous, and so perfectly in tune with what they already thought about himโ they started laughing. the kind of laughter that scrunched up the whole face, eyes rolling back to the ceiling. ใ คใ ค"sorry, justโ like, of course. itโs just a few snacks, you donโt need all that.โ
if there was one thing jinyoung enjoyed still doing like a normal person it was getting groceries. especially snacks- snacks that he was out of and thus needed to restock before starting his well deserved chill down evening with his favourite anime. the new episode had dropped yesterday and he hadnโt had time to catch up on it yet, attempting to dodge spoilers left, right and center so he could peacefully freak out about it at home.
the person greeting him wasnโt someone jinyoung was particularly ready to see. He had a feeling Stella wasnโt the biggest fan of him but as always Jinyoung didnโt exactly let it bother him. you win some, you lose some.
grabbing some tissues as well just in case along with his favourite chips and maybe a few other snacks just in case to stock up, the male found himself with an array of rather unhealthy food that the lone bottle of organic, sugar-free tea didnโt quite make up for.ย
he just flashes stella what he hopes is his most non-threatening smile, quietly asking if they accept apple pay. itโs clear they donโt want to interact with jinyoung more than they have to but unfortunately it seems the update his phone made messed up his settings because the noise of a declined card is not one jinyoung is necessarily used to. he is used to technology messing up though and so the male made it a habit to always come prepared.
before stella can feel bad, jinyoung already raises a hand to calm them down.ย โoh donโt worry, itโs okay uhโฆ,โ he mumbles under his breath while looking for a smaller bill to pay for his snacks without making him look even more like the rich bastard they probably think he is.
โdo you uhโฆ can you change a 50K bill,โ he asks timidly when he comes up short on any other measure of payment. the coins are too few for him to dig out and he hasnโt really had to use cash for a while now.
flipping through the mental rolodex of customers, stella tried to remember the last time they'd even seen a 50k noteโ and came up empty. their nostrils were flared as they stared at jinyoung, visibly trying not to laugh. again. ใ ค ใ ค"justโ" you don't even like him, their internal monologue reasoned. which, was mostly true...but they also knew if they opened their till, they'd be counting small bills for way longer than they wanted him to watch them do math. ใ ค ใ ค"keep it." in a show of what probably looked like generosity ( which stella was already internally denying ), they punched in their employee ID and fished around in their own pocket for enough small change to cover jinyoung's assortment of snacks. they pushed the till shut, stared him down for a few seconds, and then dramatically puffed their cheeks out. on the exhale, stella breathed, ใ ค ใ ค"i'm off in a few. i've just decided that you're not busy, either. you can make it up to me by sharing that," and they jabbed their finger at the chips he was carrying. stella was particular about snacks, but, they weren't about to let him think he was getting off scotch free. ใ ค ใ ค"now, umโ go, like. do something else. we've got chairs." they really just didn't want him to watch them finish stocking the shelves. the minutes ticked by quickly ( perhaps because they were stressed about their impromptu audience ), until stella was approaching jinyoung with a quick tap on his shoulder. when their eyes met, stella's brows arched before they extended a hand. "chip. and, c'mon, i've gotta lock up."

sena had an eye for fashion. she had always considered herself a lover of all things clothing. when she was little, it was playing dress-up in her motherโs fancy closet of beautiful evening gowns. it eventually developed into her gawking at models in magazines, keeping up with all the latest trends, and almost weekly sunday shopping trips.
however, she felt fashion was a lot more than just aesthetics. she believed in practicality in fashion. sure, you could look great in a red satin evening gown, but is that what you should wear when youโre just going to a party of fellow high school graduates? should you wear leather leggings to pilates? unless it was specifically for a photoshoot or music video, sena didnโt see a need to dress impractically for the place.
thatโs why she couldnโt help but stare at stellaโs feet during training. chelsea boots? this practice wasnโt being filmed or anything, so why would that have been their footwear of choice for the day? her suspicious were confirmed when she heard the coach talk to stella after practice, and it was just that thought that she was in when stella approached her.
was that really what stella thought of her? and better yet, is that what stella was really worried about in this moment? but still, she nodded.ย โuh... yeah, i didnโt plan on it...โ that was a lie. she typically told her fellow fashion-minded friends about the various faux pas she saw throughout the day. but if stella had specifically told her not to, she wouldnโt.ย โto be fair though,โ she saidย โit was a bit eye catching to see those moves in those boots,โ she said, letting out a small laugh.ย โbut hey, at least youโre prepared to dance in any shoes legacy tells you to wear, right?โ
anyone with working eyes could see that sena knew how to present herself. stella felt every hair out of place, every chip in their nail polishโ she hated it, but the knee-jerk instinct when faced with a pretty girl who seemed to have her shit together was to feel like she would be looked down on. that and the preceding reputation of the girl before them was why their metaphorical hackles were raised. stella let sena speak but felt vaguely like she was about to grind through her own back molars just listening to her, waiting for an appropriate moment to interject in her own defense. there's no way 'eye catching' is a good thing. there's no way she wasn't going to tell someone. there's no way. ใ คใ ค"look, i jโ" sena laughed. stella blinked slowly at the sound, as if reflecting their brain booting back online. their gaze flicked down to their ( stupid ) shoes and then back to sena's face. the smile there looked genuine, and without really thinking about it, they smiled back, nervous energy curling at the corners of their mouth. maybe they needed to recalibrate their expectationsโ sena looked nice. not just in the way her hair sat, but nice in the might-not-humiliate-you-like-you-thought way. ใ คใ ค"i thought i had left my sneakers in my bag," stella blurted out, looking almost embarrassed by the admission, brow knitting together in near comical seriousness. ใ คใ ค"so. it wasn't on purpose, or anything." another slow blink. her face turned pinker. ใ คใ คoh, my god, stella. she didn't ask. "i don't know how anyone does it, in taller heelsโ you're lucky, you're tall enough you might not get the platforms." it was an attempt at a peace offering, after the initial way she'd come at sena. to lean into the girl's joke.

when the bell had rung above the door, stella's voice called from amongst the boxes of snacks that needed to be stocked onto the shelves. ใ คใ ค"just a minute!" it was late, and they hadn't been expecting to see someone so close to the end of their shift. so, when they rounded the corner and saw who exactly it wasโ ใ คใ คyou've gotta be kidding me. ใ คใ ค"let me know if you need help finding anything." thankfully, stella had a little more practice keeping their thoughts to themself than when they'd first met kim jinyoung, who was now shattering some kind of well-curated fourth wall that separated this position from stella's work with legacy. ใ คใ คhas he ever come in here? how could we have always missed each other?

something about this day felt like it was "too much" from the moment stella left the dorms. lessons had felt particularly challenging, picking what to eat had felt insurmountable, there was a pinch in the right heel of her shoe that certainly hadn't been there beforeโ it was like the universe was shaking her awake, she just couldn't tell why. then, stella rounded the corner, and all of the signs came to a head, like god was waving her giant foam finger right at the figure now standing no more than a few feet away.
ใ คใ ค"oh." it was remarkably ineloquent, but whether the sudden flush of color to her cheeks was from embarrassment over the knee-jerk exclamation, or from the way her brain made a quick hop skip and a jump down memory lane the second their eyes met, it wasn't immediately clear even to her. ใ คใ ค"hey, minkyu."
minkyu. there was a face she hadn't been expecting, but should have known would turn up eventually. stella suddenly became aware of the phone clutched in her hand, which she knew contained text messages that had either gone unanswered to or gotten a generic reply back. it had been like thatโ god, how long had it been? she had an inkling that it was largely her fault and so found herself staring down the narrow gap between a rock and a hard place. ใ คใ คit would definitely be weirder if you didn't talk to him. "are youโ what are you here for?"

pocketing her phone, stella sucked in a gulp of air before exhaling to make sure it wasn't cold enough to see her breathโ which, subsequently, meant the weather couldn't be an excuse for wriggling out of the freshly laid plans. truthfully, she had been ready for a hot minute, now. but, that had given stella time to agonize over whether or not to follow through with asking minji if she wanted to follow through with something they'd danced around not infrequently. "this could be fun...it's supposed to be fun," stella grumbled to herself as she checked her bangs for the nth time, as a way to give her anxiously fidgety fingers something to do untilโ ใ ค"minji!" she spotted the other girl as soon as she'd appeared (though, honestly, who else was heading down at this time of night?), waving a hand as if she wasn't also obviously the person minji would be looking for. ใ ค"you look good," her voice sitting at a soft hiss, as if they needed to be secretive, "you ready to do this?"
