LFS Internship Fall 2015: Reflection #3
This week's ED definitely changed my perspective about youth's roles in the community. Before the ED, I was very pessimistic about youth involvement in both the Philippines and here in the US. I felt as though there weren't enough people in our community who truly cared about the progress of the Philippines. I kept thinking about the revolutionary history of the Philippines and all of the leaders who organized and mobilized the people, in the INTEREST of the people. What surprised me the most was how young all of these leaders were at the time they began organizing. One of the reasons I believed youth did not involve themselves in the community was not only that they did not care. I believed the many who truly were educated about the current crises in the Philippines thought that involving themselves in activism wouldn't make "a difference." To be honest, I still sometimes think that me being a sister of Kappa Psi Epsilon or a member of LFS is not enough to make a change. But then I look at GROUPS of individuals in our history and in our present struggle for liberation: La Liga Filipina, Katipunan, KM, LFS, Gabriela-USA, etc. I remembered that a change does not start and end with its leaders. I felt very empowered after this ED. -Katrina Liwanag
