Sea stacks in the bud

Crossing Fox Island River, and heading west into the Lewis Hills with the tops in the clouds, and a wind strong enough rip your pants off.

I spent most of the afternoon just under the clouds.

Like Vermont, Newfoundland had a cool spring, and there is still plenty of July snow in the north facing pockets.

At twilight the sun started to poke through creating a pleasant cloudscape to end the day at Hines Pond. This lake is quintessentially alpine, and hiking around it is an enjoyable stroll.

The trek out next day on the east side of Fox Island River featured plenty of sunshine and just enough wind to keep the bugs away. 

This side of the river is remarkably greener with rolling grasslands that are loaded with aquatic life.

Caribou hair, sedge, sundew, pitcher plant, blue flag, sheep laurel, grass pink orchid, Labrador tea 

The mossy cascades and isolated headwater lake of Soapstone Brook, a tributary of Cape Breton’s Clyburn River. In places it was a frustrating ascent but the pristine beauty of this lake and its surrounding acres of fern fields laced with moose trails made the arduous effort worthwhile.

Sending down the roots. A good exercise in stability we could all benefit from.

The flowerpot rocks and squishy mud flats of Hopewell Rocks, New Brunswick

Building preservation at Poland Spring Maine. Unlike the flamboyant Maine State Building (upper photos), the nearby All Souls Chapel (lower photos) has a more modest presence. The stained glass windows and vaulted oak ceiling are eye catching, but what captured my focus was the irregular shaped granite stones mated so perfectly and surrounded by raised beaded mortar joints.
