MILITARY
Virtual reality has been adopted by the military – this includes all three services (army, navy and air force) – where it is used for training purposes. This is particularly useful for training soldiers for combat situations or other dangerous settings where they have to learn how to react in an appropriate manner. A virtual reality simulation enables them to do so but without the risk of death or a serious injury. They can re-enact a particular scenario, for example engagement with an enemy in an environment in which they experience this but without the real world risks. This has proven to be safer and less costly than traditional training methods.
Skin has become inadequate in interfacing with reality. Technology has become the body's new membrane of existence.

SURGERY
The main feature of this system is force feedback as the surgeon needs to be able to gauge the amount of pressure to use when performing a delicate procedure. Unfortunately, there is an issue of time delay or latency which is a serious concern as any delay – even a fraction of a second – can feel abnormal to the surgeon and interrupt the procedure. So there needs to be precise force feedback in place to prevent this.

The vital factor of virtual reality is immersion, the degree to which the user's senses are limited to the simulation and screened from a real world.

GAMING
Virtual reality has many uses, so it is no surprise that video gaming and electronic products companies have started to see the attraction in virtual reality gaming. Since the 1990s, gaming companies have created forms of virtual reality gaming. This includes VideoBoy by Nintendo, and racing and shooting arcade games. The designs for these were simplistic and limited. Virtual reality technology then developed to devices like Wii Remote, and Kinect, where the screen follows your eye and body movements. Now though there is being brought in a new wave of virtual reality gaming devices that intend to fully immerse the gamer into the game.
