They say I am not my hair, but I am. Through my defined curls and luxurious texture you can tell my tresses are a blend from the natives whose land was taken by a people who felt the need to claim their superiority by trying to oppress us. Destroying what they feared by creating rules meant to be shackles. Then came the strong roots of the motherland once fearless kings and queens now dejected and not even considered human. only property that could be bought and sold at will. Sun up to sun down building up a country from bleeding backs, blistered appendages and broken spirits yet considered not to even have made the largest contribution. Perhaps, I'm sure there was point when the fraudulent pale skinned "founders" of this country decided to take a dip into their prized possessions and dilute a once prominent ethnic bloodline giving way to the silk like feel through which I run my hands. But somehow like Maya Angelou said I rise, we rise. The bounce in my coils a hint at the bounce back spirit that runs through my veins. Though they don't want us to be great we're still here! Young, black & educated a force to be reckoned with. Breaking down barriers and walking in corporate offices proudly displaying natural roots. False Prophets The father that reaches out to his sons and daughters with promises of quality time, but always fails to show. The one time a year he facetimes them, pictures erupt on Instagram with "Dad of the Year" filters. The woman who lies to herself, saying she's gonna move forward remains stuck holding onto the grand illusion that a ring is imminent. The chronic career late bloomer who's now pushing 50 still telling everyone he's starting a business. This same speech a repetition of words spoken over the past 20 years. That one person sheltered whose built his walls 50 feet high saying I'm fine. A smiling facade hides the brokenness that explains his aversion to love and commitment. Politicians with drawn out speeches and overused words selling a dream of hope and change better than the hustlers on street corners. Celebrities with perfect lives portraying themselves as gods with 1 week post baby SnapBack that is seemingly inhuman. Coke bottle bodies with perfect smiles that the youth worships as much as the next pair of Jordan's. The images that give them an overwhelming sense of insecurity, bullying others for minor imperfections considered against the new norm of a false society. Behind the flashing lights 2 seconds from snapping and falling into an abyss of mental instability. Aren't we all false prophets projecting images of ourselves that are more confident than what we see when we look at the mirror at home?? #poetry #society #falseprophets

OBLITERATED

Circa 2013-That moment after I watched Love Jones & thought I could be the female version of Darius Lovehall @larenztate baby I dig u like a 6 ft deep grave. I smell you like flowers after a fresh rain. I wanna know you like the pages of an open book I've read a thousand times. I wanna reach new heights with you like we were born to fly. Because when I see you, my whole body becomes inflamed & butterflies are fluttering around so hard they break their wings. When you touch me it sends chills down my spine so deep I need therapy to regain use of my speech. And my feet, well they don't even feel like they're touching the ground. All sense of gravity is lost & can't be found. " The Lady Gemini" Her bleeding heart slowly healing The picture of a battleground she had conquered.Tears that were the essence of the salt filled ocean, now a happy sun bathed oasis .Fear of future battles hiding in plain sight, now a vision she can call home. A new beginning, the chapter where she can start her happily ever after. A space that could have bled her dry and decimated her very being.Created the image of who she is today.
