Diana Ross & the Supremes (Mary Wilson and Cindy Birdsong, who’d recently replaced Florence Ballard) perform the song Forever Came Today on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1968. One of the most glamorous acts of the era, The Supremes started out wearing simple cocktail dresses hand-made from Butterick patterns by Diana Ross and Florence Ballard with imitation pearl jewelry purchased at Woolworths, quickly moving up to spectacular shimmering gowns with matching earrings designed by Michael Travis (a former apprentice of renowned Hollywood designer Bob Mackie), some of which weighed 35 pounds due to the number of sequins, beads and rhinestones that were sewn on.
