For the Halloween prompt, I absolutely adore your Buttons and Les and think them teaming up on Davey would be so chaotic and funny, so maybe them coming up with a plan to spook Davey at a haunted house or after watching a scary movie or something along those lines?
Maybe this time will be different, Buttons thinks, crouching around a turn in the corn maze. Maybe this time, miraculously, David's startle response won't be to try to deck him.
It isn't likely, but it's worth a shot. They can't ever go to haunted houses, because David worries he might hurt someone by accident if they're too close when he jumps, but Les asked Buttons really really nicely to help him scare David and Buttons cannot say no to Les.
"I could've sworn Buttons was right ahead of us," David's voice says, somewhat muffled. Buttons would guess he and Les are still back around the turn before his.
"He must be," Les says helpfully, a little bit closer. "There hasn't been a fork in the path in ages. Maybe we should yell for him?" There's a pause, and then at the top of his tiny little lungs he shouts, "BUTTONS!"
"Okay, maybe we don't yell, because we're in a public place and we don't want to disrupt anybody else," David says gently.
"But-tons," Les sing-songs, a little bit quieter but not much. "Where are you?"
They sound like they're close enough that they might be about to turn his corner, now, so Buttons goes for broke and hopes for the best.
"Boo!" he shouts, jumping around the corner.
David shrieks and his arms flail wildly, which Buttons has just enough warning to mostly dodge. David's fist lands solidly on the side of Buttons's shoulder.
"Oh my god, Buttons, I'm so sorry," says David. And then, "What the fuck was that for?" punctuated with another (lighter) punch in the same spot.
"David swore!" Les says, delighted. David ruffles his hair up and shoves him away.
"Les put me up to it," says Buttons.
David rolls his eyes. "Of course he did. But you should know better than to say yes."
