I’ve seen a recent spark of people hating playcap because people are treating player like a tsundere and not acknowledging his npd when I’ve seen no one mischaracterizing playcap heavily? I’d just like to hear what you think about it because it’s kinda silly….
This has been on my mind lately, and while I understand the want for correct characterization, I do agree that it's pretty silly. 1) None of the GT characters have any canon mental illnesses, mental disorders, or anything of the sort (to my knowledge at least) and it's kinda crazy to expect others to take a popular HC as canon when it isn't. I'm not saying HC-ing characters is wrong in any way, but I am saying that you should not expect everyone else to also share the same HC as you.
2) To me personally, the whole "dere type" thing as just a silly little thing and, hot take, but people get way too pressed over it. People have been assigning dere types to characters since the early internet, and with this resurgence of the Tsundere memeing, I hardly believe that people are /genuinely/ saying that Player is a tsundere as a way to diminish his character. It's similar to when people would male characters in media "Baby girl", in the sense that it's not supposed to be taken seriously.
We have to remember that this fandom is full of children, and even if people actually DO see Player as a tsundere, I would just suggest you scroll and go about your day. Mischaracterization is bound to happen, and so long as it isn't harmful (for example, people HCing Captain as having BPD, yet villainizing him by using him 'splitting' as a reason for why you think he would be a crazy yandere) I don't understand why people treat these things as life or death. Though, to be a hypocrite, I will say that these characters are GROWN adults, and people are treating them like they are teenagers.
Also the whole "People always make things about the ship instead of focusing on the characters as individuals" thing is just annoying to me. I had been seeing this sentiment with Blime, and now it's being extended towards PlayCap. I understand not liking a ship, but you have to understand that you are in a fandom space. Shipping is the BACKBONE to fandom spaces, and expecting it not to be so prevalent is crazy to me. In the case of Blime, there is hardly any screen time for the characters, so it's really not that crazy that people would much rather focus on the hypothetical relationship off-screen, than what is seen on screen. I've noticed that people only really care about one character anyway, so it comes off to me as though it was never about them being individuals, but rather that someone was upset that their fave isn't getting talked about enough.
In the instance of PlayCap, there is TONS of content SOLEY about Player and Captain, to the point where I had to scour the internet for PlayCap crumbs, and even take the liberty of making PlayCap content for my own enjoyment, despite the fact that my AUS content would always do so much better. If you could point me to a large group of PlayCap fans, I would personally thank you.
Sorry this was so long winded, I am very passionate about PlayCap, and fandom culture in general. I have been on the internet for a long time and these types of things are the same things that happen all the time in every single fandom ever. I am in no way angry or upset, and I apologize if anything I said comes off as rude, I just wanted to make sure that I explained myself correctly, but I understand that I could've mis-worded some things, so don't be afraid to ask for clarification. I'm open to civil conversations, lmk what y'all think!
