I should have stayed home...

To be fair, Kuro found that the more he stood next to Shiro, the more wildly different they were. Shiro had this pretty pretty hair all soft-like and gentle black eyes. Kuro was wild and greasy, with his hair that was all patchwork black and white and yellow eyes that scanned every inch of every room all the time. He also stood all hunched over himself, too used to cramped quarters and having to run at a moment’s notice.

Though he hadn’t seen Shiro fight much, he heard that he was more… unforgiving during training. Probably because fighting to the death was all he ever experienced. 

Kuro flopped back onto the floor, arms folded behind his head. “I guess. It’s weird though. I don’t wanna really be better I jus’ kinda wanna be me. Whatever me is. Haven’t had much time ta figure that one out though. All I know’s that plants’re cool, Monsters an’ Mana’s fun, an’ that ‘m not good at names.”

“Yeah, plants are cool. When you know enough about them, you can use them for healing or adding variety to your food. And sometimes, even if you can’t do either of those? Just the sight of something living and pretty can help lift spirits. Least, that’s what they told us  back at the Garrison.”

“I mean, I guess.” Kuro gave a light shrug of his shoulders. “I like bein’ different from Takkyun, but he’s like… I dunno. The reason I look the way I do. ‘m a copy whether I like it or not. Nothin’ I can do about it.”

His fingers found their way to the edge of his sleeve and he started fiddling with the fabric. “Like, I get it. ‘m not Takkyun an’ I don’t wanna be Takkyun. But some things I can’t change. So why bother pretendin’ they aren’t there? Won’t do me any good wastin’ energy like that. ‘m just glad that… I dunno. It sounds weird to say this.

“But ‘m glad I got all those tests done on me. ‘Cause that means that my scars’re different than his.”

“He’s the reason you started the way you did -- after that, the rest of it is up to your environment, and yourself.” Hunk folded his hands in front of him, arms resting on his knees as he leaned forward. “‘cause, yeah, some of it is gonna be stuff beyond your control like the scars. But some will be things you can choose. You can change your hair color, your hairstyle, how you dress. You can either work yourself harder, or less, and that will change other aspects of your appearance. Even just whether you go out in the sun or not when we’re planetside can change your skintone some.”

At the poke, Kuro laughed. This was a conversation he never imagined having, but then again, he didn’t imagine having any of this in his life.

“I’m probably hot ‘cause Takkyun’s hot, Honeysuckle. But ‘m glad you’re bein’ kind ‘bout it.”

Well, at least Kuro was laughing. Now Hunk felt a little bad.

“Alright, scoot on over, I’m sitting next to you, Kuro.” And, naturally, he did. “Alright so, yeah, he’s hot. You’re hot. Every single person that lives on the castleship? Hot. Except me, but y’know, that’s how the cookie crumbles.”

Still, he scootched closer, reaching over to gently poke Kuro.
