LEGO Minifigures Series 14: Monsters (71007)
So I heard my local LEGO store already has them in storage and will put them out September 1st the latest. Not too long of a wait and the possibility of an even earlier release has me even more excited.
When I first heard that Series 14 was going to be single themed I was not too thrilled, but seeing them now the skepticism was not justified. There are just as many creative ideas, new parts, exclusive colors and amazing designs as for a ‘regular’ series and there was no better topic to choose then this especially in terms of timing. Halloween will be just around the corner when these 16 hit the streets and they also work so superbly with the recently released Scooby-Doo sets – it almost makes me not miss Monster Fighters… almost.
So let’s have a look at them:
Monster Scientist He is probably the mastermind behind this series, as the fly in his flask suggests that he is currently busy creating the Fly Monster. He somehow reminded me of Professor Norton Nimnul from Chip n Dale Rescue Rangers when I first saw him, although the size of the head doesn’t match him at all. I wonder if the top part comes off and what he looks like underneath, if it does.
Plant Monster I just finished building the Scooby-Doo Mystery Mansion and it features a brick-build flesh eating plant that can become friends with this guy. Apparently his creation was an accident by the Monster Scientist, which explains his uneasy facial expression.
Monster Rocker Frankenrock’s Monster – is the name I picked for him. There have been other incarnations of him in the Monster Fighters theme and in Series 4, but he is the most Rock’n’Roll. Although with many Rock-related minifigures out there, maybe his design should have been pieced together from them.
Gargoyle Whovians here you go: Bok. I was wondering when a Gargoyle would show up in the Minifigures line, as I assume many of the designers at LEGO should be familiar with the animated TV show I liked back in the mid-90s.
Fly Monster The main idea behind this guy probably originated from the classic horror movie The Fly in which Jeff Golblum slowly transforms into a hideous monster. Luckily, this one looks a lot less disgusting.
Spider Lady There is a Star Trek episode in which Captain Janeway plays Queen Arachnia for a holodeck program and this looks exactly like her.
Banshee Translucent hair! What else do you nee to know. I hope it is not the last we see of this. There is no accessory to this figure, but with the hair and lower part of the Ghost Warriors from Ninjago but in a different color she is still out-standing enough.
Square Foot If you own the Swamp Police Station (60069) you might have notice this fellow on the computer screen in the office as it has his file opened. Basically he is a recolored version of the Yeti from Series 11, which makes him a bit less interesting.
Zombie Cheerleader We have seen two cheerleaders before, but of course this one is unlike the other. First thought of many is probably „Harley Quinn Custom“ as the hairpiece is perfect.
Wacky Witch This series would not be complete without a witch and she actually looks really original, not re-using any details from the Series 2 Witch or taking anything away from the Wicked Witch of the West that will be featured in the LEGO Dimensions theme
Zombie Pirate Obviously something went wrong with the Pirate Captain from Series 8, because he turned into a zombie – and with even more details to his outfit that is (although strangely enough his eyepatch is on the other side).
Wolf Guy There have been three different LEGO werewolves over the past years and in my opinion the one from the Monster Fighters theme looked a bit better than this fourth one. But the fun part is, that his clothes are the ones of the Lumberjack from Series 5.
Tiger Woman This figure beares a striking resemblance to Julie Newmar’s Catwoman from 1960s Batman TV show as well as Marvel’s Tigra. A lot of super hero potential here.
Skeleton Guy This guy really got me confused. Apparently he is the only one that is actually wearing a costume, while the others are actual monsters. Earlier I thought it would be the other way around, but especially the Spectre and Banshee left little doubt that the monsters are the real deal. Now we know, he just accidentally ended up in the monster world and is trying his best not be recognized.
Spectre Looking a bit like the Dementors from the Harry Potter (but more likable and cute), this Spectre uses the the lower part from Ninjago again – someone at LEGO seems to really like this.
Zombie Businessman I love his hair. Other than that there is not much to say about him, which isn’t a bad thing as a zombie apocalypse should also feature some regular everyday normal guys.
I might have to get all of these.
LEGO Dimensions Coming September 27th
LEGO amazes once more with its unique ability to bring worlds together. Not only will LEGO Dimensions merge physical and digital play experiences, but also IPs of Lord of the Rings, Batman, Back to the Future, The Wizard of Oz and LEGO’s own The LEGO Movie and Ninjago.
Joel McHale seems just as stunned as me:
Here is the press release:
For the first time in any LEGO videogame, characters from iconic entertainment franchises join forces and battle in worlds outside of their own. In addition to the game, the LEGO Dimensions Starter Pack will include the LEGO Toy Pad, which allows players to transport special LEGO minifigures and other LEGO objects into the game, bricks to build the LEGO Gateway, three LEGO Minifigures, including LEGO BatmanTM from DC Comics, LEGO Gandalf from The Lord of the Rings and Wyldstyle from The LEGO Movie, plus the LEGO BatmobileTM. In addition to the three minifigure heroes used to start the experience, LEGO Dimensions will allow gamers to customize their experience with additional expansion packs. Highly collectible Level Packs, Team Packs and Fun Packs will provide new buildable characters, vehicles, tools and gadgets, as well as compelling game content with new mission-based levels and unique in-game abilities. All expansion packs will feature well-known properties and provide gamers the opportunity to use everything interchangeably, anywhere throughout the game – with no limitations. A small sample of packs available in 2015 include the Back to the Future Level Pack with a LEGO Marty McFly minifigure, a LEGO Ninjago Team Pack with Kai and Cole minifigures, three Ninjago Fun Packs with Jay, Nya and Zane minifigures, two DC Comics Fun Packs with Wonder Woman and Cyborg minifigures, three The Lord of the Rings Fun Packs with LEGO Gollum, LEGO Gimli and LEGO Legolas minifigures, four The LEGO Movie Fun packs with Emmet, Bad Cop, Benny and Unikitty characters, and a The Wizard of Oz Fun Pack with a LEGO Wicked Witch of the West minifigure. Additional packs to round out the 2015 assortment will be announced in the months leading to launch. Further waves of expansion packs will be released regularly following the launch of the game and into 2016.
