The shadow on the wall did not quite match the performer. Faint horns crowned his head—a mark of a bargain made in darkness. Threads coiled around the bow trailed backward into the void, guiding the violinist and drawing him ever closer to it. A lone string quivered with shifting notes—played not by hands, but by writhing strands of hair. Cracks lined the cup, and flakes of plaster had fallen from the walls, all born of the music's trembling force. His left arm hung rigid and distorted, obeying a performance no longer his own.

An Unfolded Note

I imagine there may come a day when you return here and chance upon this message—a conclusion to the research in which you, too, once invested such generous support. Since the day I came to Britain to pursue my studies, I have breathed not a word of my past to anyone. Even now, perhaps only you have ever grasped the merest fragments of it. As I set these words to paper, I am preparing to depart on an expedition back to Australia. Guided by the logs and tattered pages I have received, I seek the truth behind that which has been spoken of only as an omniscient presence, transcending time and space. I am under no illusions as to my health: it will not withstand such a foolhardy undertaking through desert and jungle, across desolate lands where no man sets foot. Death still watches me in silence. On many nights, drenched in cold sweat, my body is gripped by a chill like the depths of winter, even as my breast burns above the heart like glowing coals. In such moments of pain, I think of Edith and of the words my father spoke to me as a child that she had gone to a place far better than this world, or perhaps that she endures still, in some form beyond our perception. In any case, the ending of life is not a total annihilation, not a fall into a void stripped of past and future, of any anchor to existence. These talks became, for the rest of my life, a solace that could never be whole, and a curse that could never be undone. A man who will pursue the end of a matter must have an answer. Whether or not that answer grants me peace, its weight has grown far greater than that of my own life. I know that you, too, have sought, over many years, some answer. I trust you understand my resolve.

(The handwriting grows irregular, the strokes hurried) It may be only because my days are so few that I can plan this journey without hesitation. An unexpected encouragement: not long ago, I received from certain earlier investigators several pieces of basalt, whose markings are not of natural origin. Though the river's current has worn them faint in places, the inscriptions are unlike anything seen before, and, so far, entirely undeciphered. They bear a striking resemblance to patterns reproduced in that journal I mentioned. Some have judged the design grotesque; the curves contort and interlace in a manner that chills the eye. Yet to me, they are strangely familiar. I am certain I have seen them in dreams, and even, in some fashion, comprehended and employed them there. Further study suggests these stones may once have formed part of a great structure, fragments of what we provisionally deem an "edifice." Their original form must have been extraordinarily precise. The area explored by the expedition is, in fact, vast, though no surface ruins have been found. I now suspect that if we follow the course of the river, we may reach an underground portion. Perhaps beneath the earth lies some immense, awe-inspiring construction, one as yet untouched by human footfall, locked still in the planet's ancient memory, like a monstrous mouth yawning in the depths. And for one as small and as ignorant as I, measured against the cosmos, should I set foot within, the ecstasy of that moment would be enough to sustain me all my remaining days.

I have received no reply to my letter, nor have I found a proper moment to speak with that man. He is forever in the company of those two young ladies, as inseparable as a shadow from its form.I considered confronting him outright, yet when I attempted such a course, it was Emil who bore the "punishment."

It was shortly before nightfall that I seized a chance to speak alone with one of the girls, the younger of the two.

She had discovered Emil, and I, in turn, had uncovered her breach of the rules. Yet, she betrayed not the slightest alarm. On the contrary, after hearing my accusation against that impostor, her manner was peculiar, peculiarly so for one of her age. She asked me:

"Even if all you say is true, Miss Mesmer. What difference would it make?"

Her face was all innocence, her tone all confusion, yet the habits of my profession allowed me to glimpse, beneath this artifice, a gleam of barely restrained excitement.

I found myself at a loss for words, and she did not wait for my answer. Instead, she pressed into my hands the braille volume she had been carrying in her arms, and departed with a light, sprightly step, as though she had just heard a most delightful fairy tale.

Her words would not leave my mind, lingering there with an ever-mounting sense of foreboding.

At dinner this evening, that foreboding proved justified. Emil's medicine was absent from his plate. It is now plain to me that the younger girl is by far the more dangerous, and I fear I may have come to this realization too late.

With the medicine so suddenly withheld, Emil suffered another lapse during the night—inevitable, yet less severe than in the early stages of his treatment. Perhaps that is the sole thing in this journey for which I may feel any gratitude: painful beyond all reckoning though it has been, the man, at least in matters of the treatment's design, did not deceive me.

This discovery has compelled me to alter my original plan. I must obtain another sample of that drug and take Emil away from this place.
