The  fall  from  that  cliff  should  have  KILLED  him .  For  the  entire  walk  back  to  the  motel  he  was  sure  that  it  HAD -  that  he  wouldn’t  last  beyond  the  next  hour .  But  he  was  stubborn  [...]  &&  so  was  Karter .  So  here  he  was  ,  still  hanging  on  -  bruised  from  head  to  toe  in  the  hospital  bed  ,  but  STILL  here .   Deep  down  inside  of  his  heart  he  knew  that  it  wasn’t   MEDICINE  that  had  brought  him  back ;   not  that  he’ll  SHARE  that  with  Karter  ,  knowing   that  he’s  not  the  kind  of  man  to  have  a  firm  GRASP  on  the  faith  that  Sam  held  inside  of  him .   

He’s  still  out  of it ,  mostly  NUMB  ;  pain  seeping  in  around  the  edges .  He  tries  his  best  to  swallow -  hand  inching  across  the  sheets  toward  Karter’s  hand ,  seeking   out  that  warm  touch .  He’s  yet  to  actually  NOTICE  the  ring  on  his  finger  ,  more  focused  on  reassuring  his  partner .  ❝    I  love  you  too     ❞   he  breathes .   The  words  CRACK  &&  rustle ,  his  throat   sore  from  the  tube  that  had  been  pushed  down  it  to  keep  him  BREATHING  while  his  lungs  were  trying  to  fill  with  blood .   It  sounds  weak  &&  HORRIBLE .  Sam  winces  &&  coughs  lightly ,  clutching  at  Karter  as  though  he  might  slip  away  again .    ❝    gotta  keep  you  on  your  toes  with  [...]  ❞   he  coughs  a  little  harder ,  pain  SLASHING  through  his  ribs .  ❝  [...]  with  a  near death  experience ,  every  now &&  again ,  huh  ??  ❞

The  suit ,  (   most  likely   STOLEN  )   fits  him  almost  PERFECTLY  &&  he  pulls   gently  at  the  shoulders  as  he  moves   FLUIDLY  through  the  crowds  of  the  function  &&  toward   the  open  bar .   He  doesn’t  order  a  drink ,  but  leans  his  elbows  down  on  the  COUNTER  top  as  he  watches  the  bartender  work  on  a  couple  of  glasses   of   champagne .    After  a  moment  his  gaze  is  drawn   STEADILY  to  the  woman  perched  a  couple  of  seats  down  &&   he  pauses .  Brow  lowers .  He  moves  himself   across  until  he’s  right  next  to  her .     ❝    Boa tarde ,  linda senhora     ❞   he  says  softly ,  watching  her  side  profile  carefully .   ❝    excuse  me  If  I’m  wrong ,  but  you  don’t   SEEM  like  the  kind  of  lady  that  frequents  antique  collections  ,  or the  collectors   PARTIES  for  that  matter   ??   ❞

❝     oh   SHIT   !!   ❞   Sam  glances  up  at  the  stranger  ,  one  hand  coming  out  as  if  to  touch  at  their  shoulder  but  STOPPING  just  short .  He  was  used  to  it  by  now -   the  CRAZINESS  that  seemed  to  follow  him  wherever  he  went .  What  he  WASN’T  quite  used  to was  explaining  it  to  STRANGERS .   ❝    Are  you  good ??   He  didn’t  hurt  you  right  ??   ❞   He  glances  in  the  direction  of  the  alley  to  which  the  mugger  had  fled .  SURE   it  had  been  SAM  that  he  was  plucking  the  wallet  off  of  [...]  but  he’d  given  the  other  person  quite  a  SHOVE  in  the  process .  

❝     hey  ,  hey  HEY  H E Y  !!   ❞   his  tone  gets  louder  &&  ROUGHER   with  each  word ,   chin  thrown  BACK  as  he  calls  across  to  the  group  of  men  TUSSLING  in  one  of  the  booths  of  his  bar .    ❝    you  know  the  RULES  guys ,  this  is  neutral  ground .  Calm  down  or  take  it  elsewhere .  ❞   There’s  a  pause  as  the  patrons  settle  &&  then  Sam  turns  his  attentions  back  to  the  woman   at  the  bar .   ❝    Sorry   about  that .  What  can  I  get  for  you  ??  ❞

❝   Here .   ❞      The  book  is  pushed   across  the  table  in  the  coffee  shop.  The  METALLIC  lettering  on  the  front  cover  is  half  faded .  His  fingertips  dance  over  them  for  a  second  &&  then  he  makes  a  soft  sound in  the  back  of  his  throat .  Eyes  then  LIFT  to  give  Evan  an  almost  amused  glance .   ❝     This  is  my  favourite .  You  don’t  have  to  READ  it ,  it’s  just a  token .  to  show  you  i’m  grateful  for  your  time  &&  company   ❞

He  makes  a  soft  sound ,  leans  over  &&  adjusts  his  denim  jacket  where  it  sits  on  his  husband’s  shoulders .  The  fur   lining   DUSTS  against  rough  fingers  &&  then  the  hand  goes  back  to  pull  the  cigarette   from  between  his  lips .   ❝    it  used  to  be  THERE   ❞    there’s  pride  in  his  eyes  as  he  POINTS  to  the  plot  across  from  them  .   He  IMMEDIATELY  feels  as  though  the  trip  has  been  worth  it .  There  stands  a  RESTAURANT  now .  ❝     The  Watery  Grave  1.0  .  I   started  working  there  when  I  was  [...]  ❞  a  puff  of  SMOKE ,  narrowed  eyes   as  he  thinks .   ❝    Sixteen  ??  ❞

It’s   been  a  long  while  since  they’d  even   BEEN  in  the  same  room  ;   Sam  finds  himself   leaning  against  the  wall  in  the  corner  -  eyeing  his  brother  with  a   CAREFUL   gaze .      ❝    you  should  drop   by  our  bar  sometimes    ❞   he  murmurs ,   distance  between  them  feeling  like  an  OCEAN .   ❝    Karter  &&  I  we  uh  [...]   we  bought  it  together   ❞   &&  that  was  another  river  to  cross.   How  did  one  explain  to  his   brother  that  he’d  gotten  married  without  letting  him  KNOW   ??
