Your cat died on a Tuesday.
Minhoâs heart stopped the same day.
You didnât know that yet.
All you knew was that Misoâs body had gone still in your arms, warm fur slowly cooling beneath your palms. Twelve years of loyalty. Twelve years of sleeping on your chest like he was guarding something fragile inside you.
You buried him behind the clinic garden.
You didnât expect him to come back taller.
When Lee Minho walked into your veterinary clinic three weeks later, he was still technically married.
You knew that because everyone knew.
The accident had been everywhere â headlines, interviews, dramatic footage of the wreck. âMiraculous Recovery.â âSecond Chance at Life.â His wife crying at the hospital bedside. His best friend standing beside her, looking grief-stricken.
They looked convincing.
Minho did not.
He moved like someone wearing a body that didnât quite fit. Like his limbs were borrowed. Like gravity felt different.
He brought in a stray kitten.
âI heard youâre good with rescues,â he said.
His eyes locked onto yours and didnât blink.
You felt something twist in your ribs.
He smelled faintly of antiseptic and rain.
And something else.
Something achingly familiar.
The first time you touched his hand, he froze.
Not in surprise.
In recognition.
His thumb rubbed against your knuckle without thinking â a slow, repetitive motion.
Kneading.
You pulled away quickly.
He stared at his own hand like it had betrayed him.
ââŚSorry.â
âItâs fine,â you lied.
You didnât sleep that night.
His wife came in once.
Perfect hair. Perfect posture. Perfect grief.
She smiled at you as if you were furniture.
âMinhoâs been different since the accident,â she said lightly while he filled out paperwork across the room. âHe forgets things. Wanders off. Sometimes he just stares at walls.â
You glanced at him.
He was staring at you.
Not the wall.
You forced a polite smile. âNear-death experiences can cause personality shifts.â
She laughed softly. Too softly.
âWeâre just grateful heâs back.â
Her hand rested possessively on his shoulder when she left.
He flinched.
It was subtle.
But you saw it.
Cats donât like being grabbed.
He started coming alone after that.
At first it was about the kitten.
Then it was about nothing.
Heâd sit in the corner of the clinic after closing, claiming he was âwaiting for traffic to die down.â
Youâd pretend to organize files.
The silence between you wasnât awkward.
It was heavy.
Like something unfinished.
One evening, you dropped a pen.
It clattered to the floor.
Before you could bend down, he was there â fast, almost unnatural. He picked it up, then paused.
His nose twitched.
ââŚDo you still use the same lavender detergent?â he asked.
Your stomach dropped.
âIâve used the same brand for years.â
He swallowed.
âI thought so.â
His best friend started appearing more often too.
Jae.
Sharp smile. Designer shoes. Eyes that lingered too long on Minho.
You saw them together once outside the clinic.
Jae adjusted Minhoâs collar intimately. Fingers brushing skin like theyâd done it a thousand times before.
Minho didnât lean in.
But he didnât step away either.
Later that night, Minho showed up at your apartment in the rain.
You hadnât given him your address.
âYou told me,â he insisted.
âI didnât.â
He looked confused.
Then his gaze drifted to the window ledge.
The exact ledge Miso used to squeeze through when you forgot to lock it.
âYou used to leave it open,â he murmured.
Your heart began to pound.
âFor who?â you whispered.
His lips parted.
And thenâ
âI donât know.â
The controversy hit weeks later.
A photo leaked.
Minho and Jae in a car together at midnight. Close. Too close.
Comment sections exploded.
His wife released a public statement about âsupporting her husbandâs healing journey.â
But youâd seen her that same morning in a cafĂŠ.
With Jae.
Across the table.
Hands touching under it.
Smiling like conspirators.
You shouldnât have felt betrayed.
He wasnât yours.
But something animal inside you bristled anyway.
He started sleeping badly.
Showing up with dark circles under his eyes.
âI dream about being small,â he admitted one night.
You were sitting on the clinic floor after hours, backs against metal cages.
âI dream about warmth. And your heartbeat.â
Your breath caught.
âI think I belonged somewhere before,â he continued quietly. âSomewhere safer.â
Thunder rumbled outside.
âYou do belong somewhere,â you said before you could stop yourself.
His eyes flicked up.
Slow.
Intense.
âWhere?â
The air thickened.
You didnât answer.
It escalated the night his wife threw a âcelebration dinnerâ for his recovery.
You werenât invited.
But Minho left halfway through.
He showed up at your door again.
No rain this time.
Just trembling.
âThey were laughing,â he said. âI walked into the kitchen and they stopped.â
His jaw tightened.
âI remember something,â he added.
Your pulse quickened.
âWhat?â
âI remember a loud crash. And before that⌠an argument.â
Your stomach dropped.
âWith who?â
He hesitated.
âMy brakes had been checked that morning.â
Silence.
âAnd Jae was the last one who drove my car.â
You felt cold all over.
âThat doesnât meanââ
âI know,â he snapped gently. Then softer: âI know.â
He looked exhausted.
Lost.
Instinctively, you stepped closer.
He leaned down without thinking and pressed his forehead against your chest.
Exactly where Miso used to sleep.
Your hands hovered before settling in his hair.
And thenâ
He purred.
Not fully.
But a low vibration in his throat.
He froze.
You froze.
âOh my god,â you whispered.
His ears turned red.
âI didnât mean to do that.â
You started laughing through sudden tears.
âYou used to do that when I scratched behind your ear.â
His breathing hitched.
Behind your ear.
Slowly, experimentally, you brushed your fingers just under his ear.
His eyes fluttered shut.
His knees nearly buckled.
âThatâs not fair,â he breathed.
The realization came in fragments after that.
The blue blanket.
The tuna incident (he denied running; he absolutely ran).
The way he hissed â actually hissed â when Jae grabbed your wrist during a tense encounter outside the clinic.
It happened fast.
Jae sneered something about âmeddling.â
His hand closed around you.
And Minho moved.
Quick. Precise.
He shoved Jae back with a sharp, feral glare youâd only seen once beforeâ
When Miso faced down a dog three times his size.
âDonât touch whatâs mine,â Minho said.
The words stunned all three of you.
Jae laughed nervously.
But his wife, standing behind him, wasnât smiling anymore.
Her eyes were calculating.
Cold.
The slow burn finally snapped on a quiet evening.
You were sitting cross-legged on your apartment floor, old photos scattered between you.
Miso as a kitten.
Miso stealing your pillow.
Miso glaring at your ex-boyfriend.
Minho picked one up.
His fingers trembled.
âI remember this,â he whispered.
It was a photo of you asleep, Miso curled under your chin.
âThatâs impossible,â you said, voice barely there.
âI remember being safe,â he replied.
His eyes filled.
âI remember you crying the day I got sick. I wanted to stay. I didnât want to leave you alone.â
The room felt too small.
âYou died the same day my heart stopped,â he continued.
Three minutes.
âI think I found my way back.â
You were shaking now.
âThis is insane.â
âProbably.â
His gaze softened.
âBut tell me Iâm wrong.â
You couldnât.
Because he was kneading the blanket again.
Because he knew things no one else did.
Because when he looked at you, it wasnât new love in his eyes.
It was twelve years of it.
Slowly remembered.
He hasnât left his wife yet.
Thatâs the controversial part.
The world still thinks sheâs the devoted partner who saved him.
She still smiles for cameras.
Still meets Jae in quiet places.
But Minho doesnât sleep in their bedroom anymore.
He sleeps on your couch.
Curled toward you.
Guarding.
Healing.
Remembering.
And every time a can opens in your kitchenâ
He appears instantly.
Some instincts survive death.
Some love does too.
He lost one life.
Heâs not wasting this one.

I kinda need an AU where your cat of 12 years passed away and reincarnated in Lee Know's body after he flatlined due to a car accident caused by his evil ex wife and the man he's cheating on him with who also happened to be his best friend.
I suck at writing i think. I can only come up with scenarios. Kzkxkdkzjzsk

If the texts yesterday afternoon weren't nerve-wracking enough, it was the downtime in between the texts and seeing San that had you ready to curl up in a ball out of anxiety; fetal position, rocking back and forth as an attempt to rid the feeling. San hadn't texted much after deciding the two of you should talk the following day, and you never questioned why he couldn't just see you the same night he had told you he needed to talk.Â
you:Â đ you didn't even look my way when you walked back into the office and i haven't heard from you all day.
you:Â i hate how all my papers and presentations are due this week. plus ppl have been weird, idk. i just wanna cuddle đ
san:Â i'm sorry. it's just been a day.
you: that's never stopped you before... âšď¸ what's wrong, san?
san:Â we should talk, baby.
you:Â oh.. okay. so let's talk tonight? i just need to finish up a few things, and i'm halfway done on most of my papers and presentations. i think they can wait a bit.
san:Â no, you should finish up. i've got a ton of things to catch up on so tonight won't work. can we do this tomorrow? i'll come pick you up once we're both done in the lab.
you:Â are you sure?
san:Â mhm. i'm sorry again, it really just has been kinda all over the place today.
you:Â it's fine, san. as long as you can promise me we're okay?
san:Â we will be. i'll talk to you tomorrow, okay? try to take breaks and rest well.
You accepted it, even if it felt excruciating and painfully long.
These things never turn out well, and you knew your case wasn't gonna be an exception. You were afraid for it, you were nervous and you were wondering what San might do to try and lessen the blow of whatever was coming.
He wouldn't hurt you, right?
He meant it when he said you two would be okay, right?
Even if he tried to be as reassuring, everything about it felt off and cryptic. None of it felt like sunshine and rainbows, none of it felt like the San you felt in love with. None of it felt like the giddy excitement, the comfort, the safety you had come to know and love.Â
You hated automatically assuming the worse, but nothing was preventing you from doing soâ not even San.
Today was actually pretty uneventful, nonetheless. Despite the wait and silence from San, you felt like you managed to get by in one piece. It still felt like everyone was looking at you; like they had all known your deepest, darkest secrets. Like they had been following your every move, especially while you were with San. It still felt awful, but you had learned how to push aside because people could talk and assumeâ but they would never know the true story.
And who knows? Even if you tried to explain yourself, they wouldn't get it.
You didn't really owe that explanation to anyone, you think.
The only other weird part about your day was when you had tried to help Belle earlier since you had some downtime and she brushed you off completely. She had been avoiding you, and it was pretty obvious she was letting the talk get to her head. She didn't maintain eye contact with you, she didn't acknowledge you, and she didn't talk to you the way that she used to.
âFLASHBACK
You walk into the lab, passing by a few of your labmates with a tiny, toothless smile etched on your lips. There was no Sunwoo around, but there was Belle; yet, she still hadn't turned to acknowledge your presence. You had gotten through your to-do list for Sunwoo's project, leaving you with extra time to spare today. You hadn't been able to dedicate a lot of your support to Belle lately due to all those technical issues you needed to troubleshoot for your project with Sunwoo, and you figured this would be a good time to make up for it.
Unless she had other plans.
"Hey Belle!" You come to her desk, pulling the courage from deep down within you to approach her first. She looks up at you, a brow cocked up before returning her attention to her laptop. "I have some time to helpâ"
"No thanks, I'm good." She doesn't look at you. "Just so you know, I don't really need extra help anymore. I've got everything figured out already."
"Oh, okay." You step away from her desk, fiddling with your fingers while you stand there looking dumb. "Are you sure?" She pauses her typing before finally looking back up at you with her brows knit tightly together.Â
"I just said it, didn't I?"
"I-I'm sorry, I just wanted to make sure since I had the time and I haven't been able to help you out as much cause of Sunwoo's project."
"Why don't you go and use your extra time with Professor Choi since you've been doing that anyway?" She gives you a look that settles in the pit of your stomach. You don't say anything to her, even as she shuts her laptop close and standsâ brushing past you to get to one of the behavior rooms. You feel a bit hurt, and your other labmates aren't even paying attention to the whole thing; or, maybe they are, and they just don't wanna say anything to dig deeper into the wound.Â
So, you turn on your heel with your head down, returning to your desk to continue your data analysis in silence.
âEND
You try to tell yourself that it doesn't really matterâ that you didn't need anyone's reassurance or validation. It hurt despite not being super close to Belle, but you knew she thought of you in a different light now and that wasn't really fair. You could see how it'd look problematic on the surface, but you thought she knew you better than that.
Guess it's also your fault for assuming.
When it's time for San to pick you up at your usual pick-up spot, you grab your keys and head outâ still not having changed out of your outfit for the day. You try to take slow steps to not seem too eager, but you can't help it when you see San parked in his usual spot. This time though, he isn't watching for you in the rear view mirror.Â
"Hey." You swing the door open and slide in. San gives you a small smile, followed by a:
"Hey." He watches as you dip forward to kiss him on the lips like you always do, and he surprisingly takes it. You were getting ready for the rejection or some kind of pull back; but, to San's own knowledge, he did it because he knew it'd be the last time he could savor it.
"You okay? Were you able to finish everything you needed to?"
"Uh, yeah. Think so." He says with a subtle chuckle before driving off.Â
"Are we going to your house?"
"Thought we could sit at the view and talk, if that's okay with you?" You slowly nod, keeping your eyes trained on San as he drives.
"Okay. You're scaring me, Sannie." He shakes his head.Â
"Please don't be."
"Then why couldn't we just talk about this like normal at your place?"
"Y/N, you trust me, right?" He quickly looks at you as he comes across a red light. You silently nod, just in time for him to drive off and continue onto the destination. "Okay, so trust me." He's still being so cryptic and distant that you don't even know how to respond. You quietly sit back in your chair and watch the surroundings pass you by, trying to settle the queasiness you feel building in your stomach.
These things never go well, and your case doesn't seem to be a one-off.
San continues to remain silent as he drives the rest of the way to the view, the music softly filling in as background noise that's enough to distract you. When he pulls into the small empty side lot and parks his car, he lets out a sigh and sits back.
"How was your day today?" He asks softly, still avoiding contact with you.
"It was okay, I guess. Better than yesterday."
"That's good."
"San." You adjust your position so you're looking directly at him, body facing him. "What is it that you wanted to talk about?"
"I don't know where to start."
"You have to start somewhere." He sighs again. "You know, whatever it is, you can tell me. We can figure this out together." You raise your hand to cup his cheek, almost somewhat of a gesture to force him to look at you. And for a minute, you feel him relax under your touch. You can tell he wants to turn and kiss the palm of your hand like he usually does, but he doesn't. "Sannieâ"
"We should stop this." Your mouth slightly drops even though you don't know what to say. Your eyes widen, your touch turns cold. You retreat your hand while you let the response sink, San still keeping his gaze out of the window because he truly can't dare to look at you right now.
He'll fold.
He'll forget all about this and risk everything for the both of you.
He shouldn't.
"W-what?"
"We need to stop this, Y/N." He finally looks at you and his gaze feels like an icebox. Everything feels so cold and distant, even if it's supposed to be a front; it's working, and it's fucking you up completely.
"All of a sudden? I-I thought we were fine, what happened? What did I do wrong?" He shakes his head.
"Nothing. It's not anything you did, I'm just trying to be realistic here."
"Realistic? I thought you didn't care about the outside noise?"
"We're only prolonging the inevitable, don't you get it? Everything is going to come crashing down on us whether we like it or not. No matter how hard I try to stop it, this is what it'll eventually come to." You don't really understand where he's coming from or what he's getting at, but it's too lateâ you feel the tears steadily streaming down your cheeks.
Then, you're sobbing into your hands and you feel pathetic. But San feels terrible, he hates this. He doesn't wanna do this but he's conflicted between right and wrong, between being selfish and letting you go.
"San, why?"
"Y/N, please hear me out on this, okay?" He's barely able to answer.
"Why? You ask him again. You cry in his passenger's seat, wiping it away with your sweater sleeves. "You said I could trust you, a-and that you wouldn't hurt me because you didn't care about anyone else."
"I need you to understand that I'm doing this because I care about you."
"But, I love you." San shakes his head as tears streak his own cheeks.
"We're being too selfish." He looks at you. "I am. I'm being too selfish and I don't need this to ruin things for you more. I need to put you firstâ"
"Why do you get to decide what that looks like for me, San?" He doesn't respond. "So, you don't want this?" He lets out a shaky sigh. "Us?"
"That's far from how I feel and you know it."
"Why can't you just say it back? Why can't we just let this be? I don't careâ" You tug on his arm and he grips your hand before shaking his head.
"Because this is already hard as it is. Y/N, listen to me." He pleads, cupping your cheeks. He finally looks deep into your eyes, his thumb gently caressing the surface. The life in his eyes are gone. The glow, the stars. Now, his eyes are dull. They're holding back. They don't show you anything. "We should stop. We need to. Namjoon and the dean are discussing your future at the school, and I need you to keep going in this program. I need you to keep going forward even if that means I can't be right there with you every step of the way. You deserve to be here and you deserve to finish this until the very end. You've worked so hard to get here, and I refuse to let them lose out on you simply because of me."
"This makes no sense to me. Why do we have to do this? We can just be more careful and plan better. We can justâ"
"I'm trying to protect you."Â
"Protect me? From Namjoon and the dean? Or are you trying to protect yourself?"
"I don't give a damn about me, Y/N!" He's a little angrier with this response but you know it isn't directed towards you. It's towards Namjoon. The dean. Yunho and Iseul. This whole fucked up situation. "I'm always gonna put you first. It's always been about you and it'll always be about you." You cry a bit harder at his answer, unsure of what to make of this entire thing. You don't know if San really means this or if he is just trying to protect you. You don't know what to do, you don't know if you should keep trusting him the same way.Â
You don't know if you can, and that's probably because you're blinded by all the overwhelming emotions you're feeling right now.
The both of you sit in this thick silence, your cries now filling the space while San tries to muster up the last bit of his energy to try and make you feel betterâ to get you to understand this better.
It's not that he wants to, he has to.
"I don'tâ" He swallows thickly. "I don't wanna do this but I have to. You have to understand." He says at a whisper, more tears streaming down his red-stained cheeks. "You have to understand, baby. Please." He begs. "I don't want them to do anything to you and I don't wanna jeopardize your future. Just listen to me. We have to do this." He leans forward to cup your cheeks and wipe your tears away with his thumb.
"No, we don't." You almost whine, but all San can do is shake his head and sit back in his seat.
"I'm sorry. I never meant to hurt you, but I have to do what's best for you." His voice shakes. "I really am so sorry, sweetheart." He answers lowly, wiping his remaining tears before retreating back into his shell and showing off his cold demeanor for the remainder of his time with you. "I should get you back."
"I should've never trusted you. I should've known this was all too good to be true. You didn't care." You cry, repeating all this nonsense to try and get him to hurt the same way as you somehow. Because he'll never understand. Everything had led up to this and you were still unprepared for this. Even though you knew you'd be here at some point, nothing would have ever prepared you for the way your heart drops to your stomach; the way you feel nothing but thunder and rain.
Blue and grey.
He does, though.
In fact, he's probably hurting the most because he had to pull the trigger and let you go.
He hates it. He fucking hates it.Â
He's trying to drown out the rest until he gets you back to your building because he can't take it. He can't take hearing you cry anymore, he can't take hearing you say these awful things because you're angry at the moment. He hopes that you'll see where he's coming from eventually because all he's ever wanted to do was protect you and keep you safe.
All he's ever done was care about you, and you only.
All he's ever felt was love for you, and you only. You showed him what love was like again and he'll never take that for granted.
This was him showing you love. He needed to put you first.
"I care about you more than anything. I'm trying to do what's bestâ"
"Without involving me? Deciding for me? Yeah." You wipe away at your cheeks once more before unbuckling your seatbelt. "Whatever San, save it." You tell him before swinging the door open and stepping out. "You were just trying to protect me. I get it."
"Baby, don't be like that. Please don't make this harder than it already is. I would never intentionally hurt you. You know this." He tries to reach for your hand, but you move it away.
"You don't get to call me that anymore." You roll your eyes. "Anyway, goodluck, San." Is all you say before slamming his door shut and storming off. You begin to cry to yourself again, feeling sorry for yourself and stupid. You know deep down that San was only trying to do the right thing and that he was trying to protect you. But, right now, you're angry, you're sad, you're upset. You feel empty and betrayed and you just need to feel this out in order to let it pass.
This too shall pass.
When you head upstairs, you quickly pack up a few things, along with your laptop and other school-related necessities before locking up and heading to your car. You feel a migraine coming on, which definitely means you should take it easy and stay behind; but, all you can think about is getting to your mom and being away from school for a few days.
Nothing's better than a mother's love and comfort, even though you aren't entirely sure how she's gonna react to this, how she'll feel about San.
In the end, you don't hate him.Â
You can't.
You could never.
âFLASHBACK
"That was a good girl's date, wasn't it? We got massages, our nails done. Now we're eating a banana split under this nice weather." Your mom chuckles. "You need to come home more often."
"I know, I know." You scoop up a good helping of the banana split, internally conflicted on when is a good time to let your mom know about what's been going on. She would probably be surprised and scared for you, but your mom had a good way of choosing her words. She had a good way of being there for you but making her concerns known without pointing fingers or putting any blame on your actions.
"How has school been? Your friends?"
"They've been good. We've all been busy with our labs."
"Jiung's been good? You think you guys are all gonna stay in the labs you're currently rotating in?"
"He's good, yeah. And I think so, they all seem to be enjoying it."
"How about you?" You poke at the banana before scooping another helping. Your mom can already tell there's something else on your mind, but she's gonna let you take the floor and open up about it when you're ready.
Which is now.Â
You just don't know if she's ready.
"Uh, yeah. It's been good!" You give her a small smile. "I'm still deciding on my route, but it's been good."Â Pause. "There's actually something else I've been meaning to tell you."
"Okay, try me!" She chuckles. "What is it?"
"I've been seeing someone."
"Oh?" She laughs. "Well, isn't that great?! I mean, you never needed a man, okay. But, as long as they make you happy and add value to your life. I just want you happy." She laughs. "Who is he, where did you meet? Tell me everything!" You sigh and take a deep breath before starting.
"We met at school. In the lab. Because.. he's my rotation professor." You give her a look, afraid of what she'll say. She stops mid-bite and almost chokes, setting her spoon down before looking at you with knitted brows.
"Your.. what?! Y/Nâ"
"Mom, please. Just hear me out before you start assuming and saying things. He didn't abuse his power, I didn't throw myself on him, okay? It just happened." You immediately say and look at her with puppy eyes. "We just happened. We grew feelings for each other and just clicked really well. We've been keeping things lowkey."
"But, Y/N. Honey, I say this sincerely. What if people find out? Not that I want them to, but they will." You shrug.
"I don't know, we'll figure it out."
"H-how old is he?"
"32."
"Oh, okay. He's young."
"And handsome." You rest your chin on the palm of your hand and smile. "His name is San. Choi San. He's pretty popular in the bioengineering and neuroscience world."
"That's good." Your mom is slightly shutting down and you know it's because her thoughts are traveling at 100mph and she doesn't know what to think or do.
Or say.
"Mom, I'm sorry. I know you're worried but I'll be fine, okay? I promise. It'll all be fine." You add to break the silence and reach for her hand.
"I just don't want him to hurt you and then you lose everything you've worked so hard for over him."
"I just don't know where this is gonna take us. Things feel too overwhelming. Like.. I just don't want any talk getting into his head about us."
"It could really ruin things for the both of you, Y/N. Please be smart about your actions. Don't throw everything away because of him. That's all I ask. Just by the looks of it, I know he makes you happy and you're riding cloud nine, but you need to remember who comes firstâ yourself."
"I know. I hear you. I don't mean to cause any unnecessary worry or anything."
"No, you're not. Lovey, I'm your mom, I'm always gonna worry regardless. But, I trust you enough to make the right decisions and to take care of yourself. I know you'll be smart and I know you won't be completely reckless. I'm not gonna lie, thisâ this isn't a 'conventional' relationship and I'm not sure how I feel about it yet." She sighs and looks at you with a hint of concern in her eyes. "I'm trying hard to see this from your side, not from my side, and I think it'll take me time to get used to. In the end, I just don't want you to get hurt. I don't want people to think bad about you, and I don't want you to lose everything you've worked so hard for."
"I know, but it's all okay. I promise." You promise her, but you don't even know if you believe the promise yourself. "You can trust him." She doesn't say much, and you can tell she's trying her hardest to swallow her true emotions.
"Just becareful."
âEND
San picks up the phone to call Namjoon, hands slightly trembling. He's still sitting in his car, still sitting in the same spot because it's his turn to cry and let out all his feelings. He hits the steering wheel before running a hand through his hair, second-guessing all his decisions.
Why did it have to come down to all of this? Did he really have to? How long before he folds and comes back to you?
Before he says fuck this all together and chases after you?
He keeps trying to remind himself that he needs to protect you and let this blow over. He keeps trying to remind himself that it'll all be worth it and you both will find your way back to each other again.
In time.
"San."
"It's over with." Is all he is able to say before Namjoon lets out a small sigh on the other end.
"I'm sorry, San. Look, just give this timeâ" Quite frankly, he doesn't wanna hear it anymore. Not today, not tomorrow, not for awhile.
"It's fine." He cute him off. "You don't have to say it. Just please make sure nothing happens to her."
"You got my word. I'll figure this out. Don't worry." San ends the call before he's digging his head into his hands and cries.
And cries.
And cries.
Because now his days are going to blend back to the black and white filter he used to have on. He'll never experience that warmth, those colors, without you around.
He'll never witness where the sea meets the sky, when the sun sinks below the horizon. When dawn meets dusk.Â
His days will be monotone and dull, lifeless and cold. Gloomy. Days he had prayed to get past and never return to.
But, he's here again.
And somehow, this pain feels worse this time around than the first time.
âFLASHBACK
San sighs when he pulls up to his parents' house, aggressively shifting the gear to park before taking a moment to himself. He wasn't happy when his father left him a voicemail, scolding him for the rumors going around about him dating his student. He was quick to call him names and demand him to make things right before his name could be tainted in the industry. San isn't gonna lie, he's always looked up to his father. Things changed when San started making a name for himself in the academic industry, creating some kind of competitive tension between the two. Well, San never felt that way. His dad strongly did though, for whatever reason.
He never understood it. It's whatever.
What San wasn't having was the fact that his father kept calling you a little girl who only wanted to use him to work her way in and up.
He slams the door to his car, adjusting his hat and his jacket before tapping the code into the keypad on the front door.
"San, is that you?" He hears his mom's sweet voice call out to him. He smiles softly when she comes into view in the hallway, opening her arms for a hug. "Please don't mind your father, you know how he is. He's just concerned." She gives the back of his neck a reassuring massage.
"Mm, yeah. I can feel the concern especially when he starts calling me out my name."
"San." His mom gives him a look before his dad looks up from the paper he's reading on the couch, forehead crinkling when he sees his son walk in.
"Why are you here?"
"Hi to you, too." San says while his mom steps in the middle.
"Honey." She turns to his father.
"So, what was up with that voicemail?"Â
"Why don't you tell us what's been going on with you and your so-called girlfriend? Do you even care about yourself or what this could do to your career? You're so carelessâ"
"So what if I'm careless! You don't even know her so you don't have a right to do that!"
"Are you actually that stupid, San? Do you know how damaging this could be for you, for us?"
"What does this have to do with you?!" San's voice raises.Â
"It has everything to do with us! Everyone thinks you either forced that girl into a relationship or she threw herself on you and you stupidly took the bait!"
"Even if I said it wasn't like that, you wouldn't listen anyway!"
"Are you serious about her?"
"What makes you think I'm not? We're two grown adults who are capable of making our own decisions and knew the consequences from the very beginning."
"And you think she'll stay? Someone that young and who is just getting started with her life, basically. You think she'll stay and be there for you when times get rough?"
"Absolutely." His dad scoffs.
"Is that so? Wishful thinking. You couldn't even keep Iseul and now you're downgrading to a stâ"
"Hey!" San's mom cuts off his father's statement. "That is enough from you. Don't finish that sentence."
"You have no idea what Iseul put me through!" San's tone is louder to match his father's energy. "I found somebody who genuinely and truly cares about me and who I am. That isn't enough for you? Just because she's a student, but a grown adult at that?! You can't even be happy for a second? You still find a way to be on Iseul's side even though she cheated with my bestfriend!"
"Maybe it's time you realized you pushed Iseul away. That was your own doing. And this girl? Don't come to me and make me tell you 'I told you so' when she leaves after she's gotten everything she needs from you." San's dad is fuming in front of him. "How could you be so sure things will be smooth sailing with her, hm? What makes you think this can work?"
"This is fucking bullshit, I'm not explaining myself to you. If you don't wanna be happy for me and support me, then so be it."
âEND
San thinks maybe his dad was right; maybe this wasn't meant to be, and was just supposed to be another fleeting moment, another lesson.
Even though deep down, he knows it's far from it.
As he sits in his home office, he scrolls through old pictures of you and him togetherâ you, pictures you've sent him. He feels the rush of sadness hit him like bricks, his chest almost physically hurting from the ache. He has this sudden urge to text you and call you, tell you how much he misses you.
But, he stops himself.
What if you stopped caring? What if you were so mad at him that you hated him?
He couldn't bear with it.
If only he knew how much you cried and yearned for him every night, if only he knew how much your head hurt while you laid on your mom's lap while she ran her hands through your hairâ gently cooing you and shushing you to help you get some sleep.
If only he knew.
"Mom, I'm sorry." You cry and cry, laying your head on her lap as you let everything out. "You were right, I messed everything up. This was all so stupid. I'm so stupid."
"Don't say that." She shushes you and tries to coo you. "Don't ever say that again." She looks at you. "What happened?" You gather the strength to tell her everything that's been going on. How deep your relationship went with San and how well he took care of you. How you weren't always the most careful but the only reason why things blew up was because of Hae-jin, Iseul and Yunho. How Iseul and Yunho just keep trying to get in between, how Jiung even went to Professor Kim about all of this.
How San broke this off claiming he wanted to protect you and put you first.
How utterly sad and betrayed you feel.
"I'm just so tired of feeling this way. I hate how alone I feel. I hate how much I miss him. I hate how this unfolded the way it did."
"I'm so sorry, honey. You need to let things be for now, okay? I know that's not what you wanna hear, but you need to. Especially for school and yourself."
"Why does anyone care? Why does it matter?"
"People have nothing better to do, and I'm sorry it had to be those two and Jiung."
"I'm so tired, mom. When will this pass? What did I do wrong? Why did he leave so quickly?"
"Lovey. You did nothing wrong. It wasn't you at all, and it wasn't San either. The circumstances are just tough. You didn't know it would play out this way and I'm sure he has his reasons."
"What if he's just using that as an excuse? What if he really doesn't want this anymore?"
"If he really cared about you, why would he lie, Y/N? I'm sure he was doing his best to protect you both, especially you. I know it hurts right now, hun. But, maybe this is for the best." You don't wanna hear it even though your mom might be right.
Maybe this is for the best. Maybe this was just telling you this could never work between you two.
No matter how hard you both tried.
San's urge to text or call doesn't lessen as the next few days go by, especially when he notices he hasn't seen any trace of you. He'll usually see you walking towards the biology building for Yunho's class or making your way to the dining hall with the girls.
If San hadn't overheard Sunwoo telling his lab mates that you were sick, he would've gone crazy.
It still doesn't help that you're feeling unwell and he can't do anything about it.
"Sunwoo." San pokes his head out of his door, causing Sunwoo to lift his head from his laptop and shift his attention towards him. "Can you meet really quickly?"
"Yeah, sure thing. Be right over!"
"Thanks." San heads back to his desk and lets out a breath, waiting for Sunwoo to come. It takes him less than 5 minutes to finally make his way into the office, rubbing his hands down his jeans. "Hey." San looks up at him. "Thanks for coming in on short notice."
"No prob! What's up, Professor Choi?"
"I wanted to talk to you really quickly because I wanted you to hear it from me directly. Starting next week, we'll be losing Y/N's support. She'll be heading to Professor Kim's lab."
"O-oh. Okay. Damn." Sunwoo ticks his head to the side. "Professor Kim with the steal." San chuckles a bit.
"Yeah." San can't even hide his sadness when he looks down at the papers beneath his hands that Sunwoo catches on and he feels bad. He still doesn't know the details and he never will, but if it's one thing he can gather right now, it's the fact that the room feels cold and empty.
It's the fact that San literally has to force himself to smile and deliver this news like all is okay and no big dealâ when in fact, it fucking is.
Sunwoo feels so bad.
"So, I know she's out sick right now, but will I still get to see her before she goes? I wanna talk to her to wrap things up, too."
"When she returns, we'll make sure she has time to close loose ends with you and gather her things."
"Hm." Sunwoo nods slowly. "Okay."
"I'm sorry this came up so suddenly, but I had to make a few changes around here. We all thought she'd be a better fit with Professor Kim."Â
"I see. She's super smart and incredibly great at what she does, I know she'll do well in whatever she does and wherever she goes." San nods.
"Yeah, she will." He sighs. "There's another rotation student that I might bring in next quarter that might be a good fit to work with you, too. His name is Baehyuk."
"Cool. Down to meet whenever the time is right."
"Thanks, Sunwoo."
"No, thank you for always giving me some help and pushing me forward." San gives him a small smile. "Everything will work out."
"Yeah." Is all he could say in response. Because he hopes it will.Â
Right now, it seems like a far reach.
All San wants to do is love you, rather than hiding just how deeply in love he was with you.
âFLASHBACK
"Here, baby." He turns to hand you a plate with a smile on his face. "Think you can help me dry the last of these dishes and put 'em up?"
"Course, chef." He chuckles, watching as you tip-toe with nothing but his shirt on to reach over and place the dry dishes into the proper cabinet. You follow suit with the last three dishes, setting the towel aside while San wipes away the water droplets around the sink. "We did it, babe! All clean."
"Sure did." He laughs, caging you in against the counter to kiss you sweetly. "Thank you, baby."
"You're welcome." You giggle. "Thank you for making dinner."
"As long as you enjoyed." You nod.
"What do you wanna do for the rest of the evening?"
"Mm, we can watch a movie and fall asleep here on the couch without any worry."
"That's fun." You smile.
"Or, we can do other things that I have in mind." He brushes the hair away from your face while you wrap your arms around his neck.
"Ooh." You reply in a sing-song tone. "Care to indulge?"
"Absolutely." He says just as he swiftly carries you and wraps your legs around him. You squeal as he walks over to the couch and gently plops you down onto the soft cushions, wasting no time to attach his lips to every inch of skin he can. He slowly hovers over you, hands roaming up your shirt and tugging material along with it as he continues to move upwardâ exposing your cute pink panties from beneath. He sinks to his knees and pries your legs open after fixing your position to the edge of the couch. "Let me make you feel good, love."
"Yes please, Sannie. Please." You beg, watching as San slides down your panties and tosses them aside. His hands caress your thighs, giving them a good squeeze while laying open-mouth kisses along the surface. You continue to watch him, biting on your lip when he hovers over where you need him at most. He licks a stripe up your folds, causing your head to cock back against the cushion. He begins to gently kiss and suck at your heatâ a satisfying, breathy moan leaving your lips as you let San relish being in between your thighs. He laps away at your clit, tonguing down your pussy as if he had been deprived of you for years.
You love/hate how good he is at this.
"Babeâ" You moan loudly, hips now working on their own terms against his mouth. He subtly nods as he continues to suck and lap away at your heat, tongue keeping you wet and filthy; just the way he likes it. "God, right thereâ" You whine, hips rolling upward and grinding against his mouth, his tongue.Â
You used to be so shy.
Now, you're not afraid to tell him what you want and he fucking loves it.
"OhâSanâ gonnaâ" Your statement comes out broken as you continue to work against his mouth, orgasm crashing down like a harsh wave against the shore. You grip his hair, body twitching as San continues to latch on and groan against your pussy; incredibly hard while watching the way your body surrenders all. "Fuck." You whisper, still twitching due to the aftershocks from your first orgasm of the night.Â
"That's my girl." He's back to kissing your thighs, hands gently rubbing up and down your leg as a way to soothe you.Â
"Need you." You tug him by the shirt to plant a messy kiss against his lipsâ shirt soon to be discarded on the floor, along with his sweats.
Now you're on his lap, slowly riding his cock just the way he likes itâ the couch's throw blanket resting against the small of your back and draped along San's lap.
It's his favorite position after all.
"Mmâ just like that, baby." He whispers against your lips as you continue to ride him slowly on the couch. "Just like that." He repeats. "You're my good girl, right? Just mine?" He asks lowly and you nod, letting out a sweet moan as he pinches your nipple and watches your head tilt back in pleasure. "Oh, fuckâ just like that." His head rests back against the couch, feeling your walls brush against him and drag against his rock hard cock. "All mine."
"Mm'fuck, Sannie." You keep your head back, intense pleasure bubbling at the pit of your stomach. You take him slowly, deeply; his cock hitting all the right spots every time you do a 'lil tug and pullâ hips carefully rolling against him.Â
"So fucking sexy." He groans. "God, you're everything." His lips drag against your skin, tongue swirling around your perky nipples as your hands tug on the ends of his soft, black hair. "Everything to me." He whispers as if your skin could hold all of the universe's secrets. The blanket is barely keeping up with your movements. San's hand comes up along the base of your neck, bringing you back down to envelope your lips with his.Â
The kiss is full of hunger.
The kiss is slow and steady.
The kiss is messy.
You break the kiss first, body slowly crumbling in his grip when you feel your high approaching quick. You moan loudly, breath ragged as you pant; hips slightly picking up the pace to push yourself further and further until you reach the edge.
"Ohâ" San matches your moans. "That's it, sweetheart. Cum for me." He praises you, voice deepâ tone sending vibrations all the way down to your core. "Give it to me. Wanna feel you cum all over this dick, angel." Hearing San talk the way he's talking is enough to make your coil snap. He continues to coo you as you come undone on his lap; stuttering in your movements and trembling in his grip. He places his hands on your hips, fingers digging deep into the flesh while he fucks up into youâ reaching his high shortly after you with a loud groan and hiss. "Fuck, that was so good, baby." You giggle, forehead against his while his hands gently caress and your back. You leave a tender kiss against his plump lips, and he chases with a few repeated kisses before bringing you down with him on the couch. The both of you lay underneath the throw blanket, now properly covering most of your bodies while San holds you from behind. He has his propped up by an arm while you both watch the show on TV, but San finds his thoughts wandering elsewhere at some point. He begins to look around the house and notices how different it feels since you've been around.
Good different.
A space that used to he so grey, so lifeless; now has remnants of you everywhere.
Your polaroids.
Pictures of you and San in frames.
Your little stuffed animal keychains and rings thrown onto the kitchen island, or the room. Or even his desk in the office.
Your little post-it notes. Your favorite chips and snacks littered around the pantry.
You were there everywhere he turned, and he finds it's one of his biggest blessings.
Especially when you lay here on the couch with him, completely not minding the idea San proposed of just falling asleep on the couch together while sorting through movies.
You agreed so quickly and so happily.
No matter how big or small, most ideas just seemed silly in his last relationship.
But, now he has youâ someone who is happy to just be with him and spend time with him. No matter how big or small the idea, the plans.

San used to think it did, but as he's been sitting in his old room at his parents' home, he's realizing that wasn't the case for him. He tries, and he tries. He tries to make himself believe that it still can conquer all, and that it still can prevail. He tries to tell himself that it wasn't him, that he did no wrong. That this was just a fucking dream he's waiting to wake up from.
He tries to believe what he has is still love.
He tries to believe he is still worthy of receiving love and being loved; of not sitting in this heartache for long.
âFLASHBACK
San is exhausted, but he's excited to be coming home a whole day earlier than planned to surprise Iseul. He caught the next flight out as soon as his commitments during the conference had wrapped up, ready to come to his wife and be in her arms. He couldn't wait to hold her, kiss her, and shower her with love especially because they had been arguing lately. It's like that was the only form of communication they knew.
All he wanted was to stopâ to make up and to give her everything, to have her back and to just be.. happy.
Why were they even fighting so much?
Iseul felt distant and he wasn't sure how to bring her back. But, he'd try his damn hardest. She was his wife and he loved her so. He would never give up no matter how hard it got.
It never used to be this way.
San picks up Iseul's favorite perfume from the Duty Free and stops by a quick flower stand to grab a small bouquet of roses. He calls an Uber that comes in less than 5 minutesâ San gently setting his carry-on bag in the trunk before plopping into the backseat with the roses and perfume sitting on his lap. He texts Iseul as if he hasn't returned, trying to keep the surprise under wraps as much as possible. He's trying to see what she's up to and if she ate for dinner, but she hasn't responded.
Which, again, wasn't entirely uncommon behavior from Iseul.
But, since they had been fighting and arguing so much recently, the pauses and breaks in between texts seemed to be getting longer and longerâ a tiny detail he refused to look at because it would unravel the rest of the problems he had been brushing under the rug;
Problems he stuck at the back end of a book.
He texted her close to three hours ago.Â
San didn't really know why Iseul was so angry with him sometimes. She argued and she would say things that made him feel like something deep within her resented him more than loved him. He's aware he's not the best with his time management, he's aware that, sometimes, he makes her feel like she comes after everything else.
He's aware.
He'll acknowledge his mistakes and short-comings, but he'll always make up for it. He isn't perfect, but he'll always try. Always.
When the cab pulls up to the house, nothing feels unusual. He feels like he sees Yunho's car parked on the side street a house down, but that wouldn't be too unusual since he's always around. But, it does feel a little weird that he would be here when San wasn't home. The two had been really close as of lately, and it felt like Yunho had gotten closer to Iseul than he had been with San.
Yet, another tiny detail he refused to look into because of all the possibilities.
They could never.
San felt so naive, but they could never.
He gets inside the house and the living room TV is still on. Kinda loud, actually. There's two wine glasses sitting on the counter, both empty with remnants of red wine pooling at the bottom. San sets his work bag down before carrying his carry-on duffle upstairs with him, along with the flowers and perfume.
Funny that they aren't down here.
He climbs up the steps, wondering if Iseul was in the room and Yunho was busy doing something else? He can't come up with anything because there isn't really anything to do up here.
They're still nowhere to be found.
He feels his heart beating out of his chest.
Because he nears their door and Iseul is making those sounds she makes when San makes love to her. Except, she's a little louder this time. Throws in some giggles. At first, San thinks he's dreaming; that there's no way she could be doing this to him right now.Â
There's no way. She was his wife.
She would never.
They would never.
Then, the door creaks open from the harsh breeze that comes in through the cracked window of the room. San gets a glimpse of the bed and the sheets are different. Things feel different.
And that's because they are.Â
Everything is different, and everything will be different from here on out.
If only San knew that, if only he caught on earlier.
Would've saved his ass from the heartbreak that was about to be catered to him on a silver platter.
The sounds are indeed leaving Iseul's lips, and as soon as San pushes the door open, he almost wished it could have been anybody else if this were literally the circumstances that were meant to find him. If this was going to happen either way, he really wished it was somebody else. Because why is he watching Yunho grip Iseul's hips the way he normally would when she's on top?Â
Why is he looking at her the way he isâ like she's everything to him, like she holds all the answers he's been looking for, like he.. loves her.
San doesn't even know what to say at first, he doesn't even process this. He just drops his things to the ground, along with Iseul's perfume and the flowers. The thud is enough to make them turn their attention towards the door, immediately pulling on the sheets when Iseul hops off of him.
They look at him in shock.
What was he doing here?
Ironic, San has the same question.
"You two actually can't be serious." He says close to a whisper, a pathetic chuckle leaving his lips because what in the actual hell is going on? "You can't be serious." He repeats, but this time, his tone is laced with disbelief, confusion. Anger. "You can't be serious!" His tone rises.
"W-why are you here? I-I thought you weren't coming home for another day."
"Oh, so that's how you'd be filling in your time while I'm away?" He scoffs angrily. "I should've known, I should've fucking known!" He's yelling now, and he hasn't yelled like this ever. "You couldn't even save me from all this fucking mess?!" He aggressively runs his hand down his face, hands placed on his hips as he paces around. Not even sure where the fuck to look while Yunho and Iseul are scrambling to get themselves together and out of the damn bed.
The damn bed he shares with his wife.
"Sanâ I canâ"Â
"What the fuck can you explain?!" He grabs the closest thing to him, which happens to be the tiny vase full of fresh lavender that Iseul bought recently and throws it against the wall in pure rage, frustration. "Huh?! What the fuck can you possibly explain, Iseul! Do you think I'm stupid? Do you take me as a dumbass?" He pounds his hand against the wall near the doorway.
He scares himself.Â
He has never been this angry.
He has never felt himself feel so different and worked up, almost borderline toxic, in a relationship. It feels so wrong, it feels so unhealthy. Unlike him.
"How long?" He mutters.
"It was justâ"
"How long!" He yells again, and it startles Iseul and Yunho.
"A month or so." Maybe he shouldn't have asked. There's so much uncertainty in her tone, she can't even remember the exact time this all began.
It all blended.
It was a blur.
It could've been more. Feels like. Yunho gives her a look and it's obvious.
She's lying.
"I should've known. I should've known. I should've known." San keeps repeating to himself, tears are streaming down his cheeks even though he's more livid than anything.
"I'll just goâ"
"No, you stay. I'll go." He almost growls lowly at Yunho.
"Sanâ" Iseul calls for him. All of a sudden.Â
"No, don't. Don't call for me because you weren't doing that before. This is it, Iseul. You don't get to call me, you don't get to ask me to do anything. You don't need me! Stick with him since that's what's been happening all along. Aren't I right? You two really deserve each other."
"San." Yunho sighs, slipping into his shirt as San is about to head out of the door.Â
"We should really just talk about thisâ"Â
"What the fuck is there to talk about?! What is wrong with the both of you, wasn't that enough of an explanation?" Yunho mistakenly places a hand on his shoulder to try and get him to turn back, but San pushes him with so much force that Yunho stumbles against the drawer and causes a frame to tumble and fall to the ground. "Don't touch me." He glares at Yunho, eyes glazed over as hot tears brim his lids. "Do not touch me ever again. I don't need any explanations, I don't need anything." He swallows the lump in his throat. "I'm done with the both of you." He slips the ring off of his finger and tosses it near the bed, letting it land on the floor as it slips down the sheets. "Have it, Iseul. Take it all. That's what you do best." He is barely able to get out. "I'll come back to grab things when you aren't around."
"San!" She cries for him, slipping on her robe to chase after him. Yunho grabs her by the wrist and tries to stop her, shaking his head as a way to tell her to let it go. She quickly eyes the roses and the perfume near the bed, causing her to snatch her wrist out of his grip. She heads down the stairs and continues to call for San even though he's already in his car and about to pull out of the garage.
She cries as she frustratingly runs her hands through her hair, unsure of how she could try to salvage her marriage.
How could she bring him back?
âEND
He checks the time and realizes Iseul won't be around the house right now due to some lab dinner she's attending. He still sees her calendar linked to his and he's close to deleting it, but he needs to grab the rest of his things before he can do so. They haven't really talked about that night because she's good at playing her game. She's tried, and she's tried.
She keeps crying for him, calling for him.
She came back running right after the whole thing. Then, they fought. She ran back to Yunho.Â
Came back.Â
It makes him so confused and so, so tired to be dancing in circles. He might be dumb for falling for it every time, especially when things clearly haven't changed. Why does he have to fight for a spot with Yunho?Â
He was her husband.
He shouldn't have to.
What else could she possibly want from him?Â
He was done with this. He was tired, and he was done.
His parents aren't home either [thank god, he can't take another second of them nagging and prying], so he swipes his keys off the counter and leaves with haste. He's trying to avoid a run-in with Iseul because all he wants to do is grab his shit and leave in peace.
He doesn't even know what's gonna happen to the house, he's not even sure if he would want it should she give it up in the end. Every corner is gonna be painted with her face, even Yunho's, when it was meant to be a happy home for two people.
Them.
San sighs heavily as he makes the trek down to the house, which is kinda far but he doesn't mind the drive. It's peaceful, it's relaxing; it calms his nerves. He blasts his music through the speakers, zipping through the highway and the streets before pulling up to the garage. The house is dark and Iseul's car is nowhere to be found. He quickly slips out of the car and unlocks the door, stepping out of his shoes before climbing up the steps to the room. There are some unwashed dishes in the sink and the flowers sitting in the vase have wilted away.
The candle hasn't been replaced with a new one.
The throw blanket on the couch is falling off the edge.
When he gets upstairs, some of Iseul's drawers aren't completely shut. The closet door isn't closed. Her laundry is still unfolded and at the end of the bed they once shared. Sheets are different again, but this time, they're a dull pale baby blue. The extra sheets her mom gifted them when they had first moved in.
Since that night, Iseul hasn't placed flowers in the room. Their pictures are gone.
The shutters remain close.Â
All signs of a broken and cold home.
He tries not to pay attention to the feeling settling in his stomach right nowâ after all, he's on a mission to grab some things and go. He throws a few things into his duffle bag, making sure to grab some extra socks and boxer briefs to last him until his next trip to the house. He's got enough clothes that he could mix and match with so he thinks he's good.
He thinks he's set, and he thinks he managed to slip by unnoticed again.
Except, he hears the front door shut when he heads down the steps.Â
"San?" She asks for him softly. He slowly heads down the rest of the stairs and turns the corner to see her standing there. She doesn't look too happy, nor does she look like she's been able to sleep well recently. But, he doesn't think it's fair to put the blame on him for all of that. She did this to them. "Hey."
"I'm done grabbing clothes, I'll be out of your wayâ" She stops in front of him and he tries to take another step to the side, which was also unsuccessful.
"Wait, why don't you just stay? Aren't you tired of doing this?" He furrows his brows and subtly shakes his head.
"Aren't you, Iseul? I don't know what you want from me."
"San, I'm sorry." Iseul starts to cry to him, making him tear up in return. But, he can't. He's done. He doesn't wanna do this anymore. He deserves better. He's crying because he's exhausted, not because he wants her back or because he misses what he had with her. It's too much of painful memory to even reminisce about. He is just tired. "Please. I'm sorry, I just want you. I don't wanna do this anymore, Iâ we can fix this, can't we? We can go to counseling and fix this."
"Iseul, no." He pries her off of him, tears streaming down his cheeks. "No, we can't. There isn't anything to fix."
"Don't say that." She almost whines. "I'm sorry, San. Please justâ please don't do this. I'm not gonna give this up."
"What makes you think you haven't already? No." He repeats. "You chose that night and you made your decision. You decided to start that whole thing with Yunho, and you decided to let him stay. You let me go, and I don't deserve all of this bullshit, Iseul." He places his hand out to keep his distance when she tries to grab for him once more. "Why can't you stop? Don't you see how fucked up this is?" He cries. "I don't wanna do this anymore. I'm so fucking tired. So please, no. I don't want this, please stop putting me through this." He begs. The tears continue to stain his cheeks even as he licks his lips and swallows dryly. He watches as Iseul sobs into her hands and falls to her knees on the floor, but he has nothing else to say.
Nothing left of him to give.
"San."
"I'm gonna go." He whispers, gaining the courage to step aside her and slip into his shoes, walking out as the pain burns him deep in his chest hearing Iseul continuously sob into her hands. When he plops into the driver's seat, he tosses his duffle bag off to the side and lets out a shaky sigh. He continues to cry to himself, digging his own head into his hands before he gathers himself and turns on the car. He doesn't think he should drive right now, but he just wants to go home and be in his own peace. So, he speeds off; though, the world feels like it's caving in on him.
For a second, San thought he deserved all of this. He felt so fucking sorry for himself because he thought he deserved every bit of the hurt, the betrayal, that came his way. Every time he thinks about it, it slices his wounds open all over again, and he feels sick to his stomach.
âsummary: assistant professor in bioengineering, incredibly attractive, lonely and divorced; thatâs how most people describe san. but despite the events that have happened in his life, san has a lot going for himself. heâs a successful, sought out professor due to his brilliant contributions to science at just an early age of 32. he worked hard to get where he was now; head deep into his research, his publications, building his lab and creating a name for himself. everything was good and smooth sailingâ until it wasnât. because when he meets you, a bioengineering grad student interested in rotating in his lab, he finds himself ready to risk all the blood, sweat and tears he put in throughout the years just to keep you closeâ his need for you spiraling out of control like a wildfire.

Today, it feels like everyone is staring at you.
Today, it feels like everyone knows, and everyone is projecting their assumptions about you and San out into the world.
"You okay?" Eunchae looks down at you as you walk and avoid contact, keeping your eyes down on your feet below or your phone. "You're awfully quiet today." Maybe word hasn't gotten to Eunchae, Jurin or Felix yet, but you know it'll eventually make its way over.
Or, maybe they have heard and they're just waiting for you.
All you know is that you wanna hide under your blankets to prevent all this overthinking, this anxiety from feeling like everyone is watching you.
"Yeah. Just tired."
"You sure? I'm all ears, you know."
"Mhm." You give her a small reassuring smile as you tug on your bag. "Thank you."
"Course."
"Have you heard from Jiung today?" You ask. You haven't really talked to Jiung since your fight at the happy hour event, and he hasn't done much to talk to you either. It's a bit awkward, but whenever you and your friends are all together, you try to keep the peace and act like nothing is wrong. You do hope he's okay, and you do hope to have your bestfriend backâ but you're still upset at the fact that he jumped to conclusions about San and accused him of forcing you into this.
"No. But, he did say he probably wasn't gonna grab lunch cause he needs to take care of some things."
"I see."
"I'll see you for lunch though, right?" You nod, just as the Biology building comes into view. "Goodluck with class today."Â
"Thanks." You squeeze her hand before heading inside for class. Luckily, Yunho said he wouldn't be able to join class today. You weren't really in the mood to deal with him, and you're more so worried about getting through class in one piece before your mind tears you apart with all this overthinking.Â
"Morning Y/N!" A student already sitting in the classroom says. You're instantly comforted as you greet them back and start getting set up at the front of the classroom. But, that instantly goes down the drain when two more students walk in togetherâ eyeing you as they pass the front table before talking amongst each other.
Fuck.
You haven't heard from San either.
The world truly felt like it was swallowing you whole.
âFLASHBACK
"Hey! I'm back." You smile at Sunwoo as you place your things down at your desk. It instantly fades when you get a chance to look around the basement office, a few of your lab members talking amongst themselves while looking in your direction. You slightly furrow your brows, wondering what exactly they were talking about or why they felt the need to be doing all of that in your face.
Was everyone in on you and San?
Is this what everything has come to?
"Hey you!" Sunwoo looks up, noticing the shift in your mood. He turns to look at everyone, shaking his head before returning his attention towards you. At this point, everyone has returned to their desks or left the room to head into the behavior or wet lab rooms. "You good?"
"Hm." You hum. "I guess."
"You guess? How was the conference?"
"Good! It was chill. Jotted down a few presentations I wanted to share with you and Belle. Is she around?" He shakes his head.
"Haven't seen her."
"Hm, okay."
"You can tell me, I'm all ears." You look at your watch.
"I gotta run behavior soon."
"So, let's grab something quick to eat before you run behavior?"
"I'm down. Kinda starving anyway."
"Yeah, let's get something in you. You won't be able to focus otherwise." He stands and stretches before nodding towards the door. "So, what was the most interesting?" You follow behind him with your wallet clutched in hand, lingering eyes watching as you leave with Sunwoo.
"Maybe she's trying to get around the lab?" You overhear one of the guys say just as you walk out of the room with Sunwoo, pausing in your steps.
"Sunwoo."
"Huh?"
"Actually, you know what. I think I can hang on until dinner. I should get started on behavior. We can talk about this another time."
"Huh? No, let's get something really quick."
"You can go ahead without me. Sorry. I just realized I'm more strapped on time than I thought I was."
"Okay? But, I'm grabbing you a snack and you better eat it." He slowly starts walking backwards down the basement hallway, glaring at you.
"Thank you." Sunwoo watches as your head falls when you walk back into the basement office. Truth be told, he's been hearing the talk go around, but he's not one to meddleâ especially if it has something to do with his good friends. He'll always be on your side, regardless of what people say or think.
And he feels awful it's starting to be more obvious around you. The talk. The looks.
He wishes he could do more as your friend to help keep it away from you.
âEND
Namjoon is already having a rough start to his day despite it being one of the lighter days meeting-wise. He was woken up to an urgent, sensitive email from the dean about an anonymous tip that came in overnight about San:
Namjoonâ
Please get to the bottom of this; we received this tip last night about San and his student.Â
'Hi. I'm not sure who to direct this concern to anonymously, but I believe Y/N Y/L/N and Professor Choi (San) are in an inappropriate relationship. I think she might be using it to her advantage to move forward in the program and secure her spot in his lab.'
I'd like to resolve this before the end of the week. This should not be taken lightly if this is true...
And the thing isâ he's just frustrated that this has been taking up this time lately. He hasn't even gotten his own time to think properly. He could only sigh in disappointment as he got ready for his day, unsure of what else it could bring him.Â
He should've known the storm was coming.
Iseul tugs on her jacket as she heads over to the Panama Building, the wind cooling her cheeks as she made sure to clear her hour for this particular meeting. Most students are in class right now, so the halls are quiet, still. Iseul takes the elevator up to the second floor and steps out, rushing down towards the left end of the hall.
"Namjoon." Namjoon turns over his shoulder to see Iseul. His door is wide open since he doesn't have any important meetings for awhile, and he always tries to foster a welcoming environment by letting students [and faculty] know they're always welcome to pop in if they need him.
He did not mean her though, especially today.
"Iseul."
"Can we talk?" Namjoon quickly sizes her, realizing she's already inside his office. He doesn't necessarily have a choice, but he knows this talk was gonna happen sooner or later.
He knows Iseul always has something to say.
"You're already in my office so I don't think there's necessarily a choice." He says it in a slightly playful manner just so he doesn't come off entirely rude. "What's on your mind?" Iseul shuts the door and crosses her arms before looking at him. Namjoon sits on the edge of his desk, hands loosely clasped together.
"I think you might already know." He shrugs.
"Enlighten me."
"San."
"What about him?"
"Can you let him know how dangerous it is to be dating his rotation student? He's being stupid."
"He's a grown man."
"And you're the chair."
"Thanks for the reminder." He furrows his brows. "Respectfully Iseul, this is not a discussion for you, that's why I'm not trying to indulge."
"How is this not? He's putting his reputation on the line, along with the school's. Including yoursâ"
"I don't see where you're involved. You don't have anything to do with him directly or the bioengineering department." He crosses his arms and stands. "I appreciate you bringing this to my attention, but this wasn't your place to do so. I'll handle it and I'll take care of it, so you don't need to worry." Namjoon glares at her a bit.Â
"You're being so casual about something pretty severe." Namjoon pauses as he maintains his eye contact with her. She wants him to shrink and fold, but he won't.
"I think we both know that's not the reason why you're bringing this up." Her brows are knit tightly as they sit in an awkward, tense pause. "Aren't you tired of treating San this way? Why exactly do you feel so strongly about calling him out?"
"I'm not even doing anything to himâ"
"You're right, you're not. You don't respect him, you don't acknowledge him, you don't know how to be civil with him. Yet, you don't see me calling you out on your behavior towards your ex-husband who has done nothing but try and keep the peace. I only ever hear San's name come out of your mouth when you've got something bad to say about him." She glares at him. As much as Namjoon equally tries to be there for all of the faculty and to not choose sides, one thing that can surely piss him off is when people act this way unwarranted.
So no, he won't sit back if he feels the hostility. He understands the severity of the situation and he has yet to gather his thoughts and his information, but he won't take this.
"So, you're gonna let this go? Do you even actually understand the situation, Namjoon? If you won't take care of it, I'll have no choice but to escalate this to the dean."
"I do, plenty. You don't have to tell me twice or how to do my job, Iseul." He walks over to the door. "I already said I'll take care of it. On my own terms and in my own way. Not the way you want me to." He places a hand on his hip. "And what makes you think we haven't already discussed this?"
"Fine. If that girl ruins everything for the schoolâ"
"She won't." Namjoon cuts her off just as he swings the door open. "This will be taken care of, end of story. Is there anything else I can help you with that doesn't involve San and his personal matters?"
"No." She huffs a bit before walking out of the room. At this point, Jiung is cutting the corner and almost running into Iseul as he makes his way to Namjoon's office. Jiung does a curt bow to Iseul as she storms by, heels clicking away on the linoleum floor. Her feet are heavy, Jiung feels every step even as she gets further and further away.
"Oh, Jiung. Nice to see a friendly face." Namjoon lets out a breath and gives him a toothless smile.Â
"Professor Kim." Jiung gives him a bow. "Are you free right now?"
"Mhm." He steps aside. "Just finished with Professor Lee. Come on in." He welcomes him inside, a bit relieved to see his face and to be welcomed by his gentle aura. It's nothing like Iseul and he's grateful; although, it does make him a little nervous to see Jiung in his office when he doesn't necessarily belong to the department.Â
And just like Iseul, the buzz around campus, everything that's been going downâ Namjoon already feels like he knows what this is about.
The only thing he can do is confront it and take care of it just like he told Iseul he'd do. But, how? He's not sure. He's gonna have to take the time today to sit San down and poke at his brain because he's just not understanding how all of this went down and why his name and your name are being tossed around together.
Maybe he just didn't wanna believe it was true; not with San, no. He couldn't. Both as his friend and colleague.
"What can I help with? I'm a little surprised you're popping into my office since you're in the electrical engineering department."
"Ah, cause.." Jiung slowly sits in the chair and sets his bag down. "It doesn't necessarily have anything to do with me." Namjoon cocks his head to the side.
"Okay, no worries. I'm all ears."
"I-I don't really know how to say this, but I'm mainly concerned about a friend. She's in the bioengineering department."
"I think I might know what you're talking about." Namjoon says, giving Jiung a nod to proceed with his explanation.
"Yeah, it's that. I feel like Professor Choi might have forced her into it, though. It just seems really out of character for Y/N, and I don't know. I guess it just feels like he might have said something or tried to take advantage of her."
"I understand your concern for your friend, but can you let me know why you think Professor Choi is taking advantage of her or forcing her into this?"
"I just.. it just seems off, is all."
"But, what if this is also Y/N's choice?"
"It's not like her."
"I'm not saying you don't know your friend, Jiung. But, there are things people are fully capable of doing that can come off as unexpected from your point of view."
"I talked to her after the whole happy hour thing went down and I found Professor Choi kinda cornering her against the wall. She didn't look scared or anything, but she did get defensive while I was talking to her and asking her about it."
"I see." Is all Namjoon says because one, he just doesn't know. Just like he told Jiung, there are probably things he doesn't know San is capable of doing. He needs to talk to him and that's the only way he'll get the proper story. The only way to get to the bottom of it is finally confronting San about the issue at hand.Â
Face to face.
To be honest, he's been putting off the conversation because it's not a conversation he wants to have. It's not easy, nor will the decision at the end be something he wants to doâ but he has to.
"I'm sorry, Professor Kim. I don't mean to add to your plate, but I got worried."
"Is Y/N doing okay otherwise?" He nods.
"Think so. She hasn't been saying much. We got into a fight after I confronted her so we haven't been talking."
"Sorry to hear that. I'm sure things will smooth over sooner or later." Namjoon says. "Is there anything else you'd like to let me know?"
"No, that's all. I'm sorry I don't have much details, I'm just worried about her."
"All good, I understand. I'm sure she appreciates it, too. She's lucky to have a friend like you by her side."
"Thanks, Professor Kim. For hearing me out."
"Sure. I'll take care of it and see what I can do, okay?" Jiung nods and stands, slipping his bag strap over his shoulder.
"Can we keep this between us? Please don't mention that I stopped by."
"Of course." Namjoon says softly as he stands to walk him to the dior. "Of course." He repeats.
"Thanks."
"I just can't promise you I'll have any updates cause it'll be pretty confidential moving forward."
"It's fine. I get it." Jiung stops right before he steps out the door. "Thank you again."
"No problem. You know how to reach me if you have any other concerns." Jiung nods before slipping through the door and taking his exit. Namjoon exhales heavily before pulling out his phone to text the person he needsâ
namjoon: can we talk in my office? i'd rather much do this today, not later.Â
namjoon: i'm free for the next hour and half.
san: yeah. i'll be there in 15 minutes.
namjoon: thanks.
He sighs again, pinching the bridge of his nose as he tries to gather his thoughts. It's the hardest thing to approach this as a colleague rather than a friend because as a friend, Namjoon would let this go. He knows San deserves to be happy, and it sounds like he is. That's all he's ever wanted for him especially after all the hurt and pain he had gone through with Iseul and Yunho. But as a colleague, his 'higher-up' even, it's wrong. San's happiness is wrong because it's with his student. A student who is a grown adult who can make decisions for themselves. It's wrong.
So, what does he do?
He feels a migraine coming on, so he tries to busy himself with some emails, making sure deadlines and reports have been submitted. Luckily, the dean is giving him some time and isn't pressing him for answers right this second even though he knows it's on his mind. If he was, Namjoon wasn't sure what he'd say.
He's not sure how he'll get San out of this.
"Yo." San appears in his office, softly shutting the door behind him.Â
"Take a seat." San immediately picks up on the vibe in the room and how stressed Namjoon looks. He knows they still need to talk about things, but something tells San it's become much deeper than that and he's not prepared for it whatsoever. No matter how hard he tried to prepare, there's no proper way to be fully prepared.
"You okay?"
"Honestly, I don't know." He sits back a bit, hands clasped on the surface of the table. "But, I'm just gonna get right to it because I think this is way overdue."
"Okay." San manages to respond softly.
"We need to talk about what happened at the happy hour event the other day, plus that whole thing with Iseul and Yunho." Namjoon pauses before he cuts to the chase. "San, why do I keep getting wind of you being in a relationship with your rotation student?"Â Silence. "Y/N, to be exact." He looks at him. "Is that what the whole happy hour thing was about? Is that what you three were discussing in the conference room yesterday?" He sighs. "I was try to push this off a little longer until I could figure out how to get you out of this, but word keeps going around and it definitely didn't help that you three had a screaming match about it." San sighs heavily as he sinks into the chair.
"Well, as far as I know, I wasn't planning on discussing my personal matters with Yunho and Iseul. They trapped me into the fuckingâ"
"San." Namjoon stops him. "Is it a yes or no?"Â Pause. San just looks at Namjoon and it's enough for him to put the final piece together. Everything had been about you from the get-go, but San still won't say it. He's doing everything to protect you, but this might be it; there's no way he can lie to Namjoon about this, or hide this from him any longer.
It's far too late for that.
"San." He repeats. "This is not the time to try and lie to me. I had two people talk to me about it and an anonymous tip came in that was sent my way."
"Who?"
"It doesn't matter." Namjoon furrows his brows and lets out a heavy exhale. "I need the truth from you. Now." The exasperated sigh that leaves San's lips is full of emotions; fear, anxiety, protectiveness, even.
"I'm sorry." Is all San can respond with. It comes out low, barely above a whisper.
"Why?" Namjoon cocks his head to the side, hands on his hips. "Why? I just wanna know why!" His voice is harsh, but he keeps his tone low. "A student, your student? It's damn near everywhere, you know that, right? I don't know how I'm gonna fix this for you, but you know they'll take action against her and probably youâ"
"Namjoon, please." San pleads. "Please don't do this to her. Don't take her out of the program. Do whatever you need to me, but don't take it out on her."
"San." Namjoon pinches the bridge of his nose before letting out an exasperated sigh. "You should've known better." He looks at him, but San can't even respond. All he can do is shrug and shake his head because he did know better, he just didn't wanna do better and chose to be selfish. "I need to figure this out before end of the day and report back to the dean. I can't force you to act a certain way or do things you don't wanna do. But, for this reason in particular, I'm gonna need you two to stop. You're not interacting with her on campus, you're not going to be involved in anything having to do with her moving forward." Namjoon shakes his head. "You both couldn't wait until graduation or something? I know it's years ahead but you know how this looksâ"
"Iâ no. Things just happened. That's really the only way I can explain it. I'm sorry. The hell am I supposed to do? I can't help but feel how I feel for her." Namjoon sighs heavily, feeling torn between wanting his friend to be happy, but concerned and disappointed for his colleague.
"That isn't gonna fly. You knew better than to get involved with a student in your lab. You can't just risk everything you've built for yourself, San. You have no idea how much trouble you could get into if the school finds out just exactly how deep your relationship has gotten with herâ let alone, your own rotation student!" His tone slight rises, but it falls when he sees San visibly shrink and lose eye contact with him. He paces around for a bit, hands still on his hips as he tries to figure out a way to brush this over before it gets way too messy and complicated. "I get you. I do. You deserve to be happy, and who the hell am I to police your actions? But, I can't have you do this to yourself or her. The both of you are grown so I expected you to do better."
"So, what's gonna happen?"
"Well, I'll need to let them know this isn't true and that you two aren't in a relationship. I'll have to remove her from your lab and I'll need to figure out where I can place her or what I can do for her."Â
"They won't kick her out, right?"
"Honestly, I can't even be sure. I don't think so, but you two will definitely not be allowed to be near or around each other." Namjoon looks at him. "Are you not even worried about yourself?"
"No, I'm not."
"She's worth it to you?"
"More than anything." San says softly. "Look, it's clichĂŠ but you really don't understand." Namjoon shrugs.
"Maybe I do, maybe I don't. I don't wanna take your happiness away, San. Believe me. That's the last thing I wanna do and this is already difficult as is. But, it just had to be her?"
"It did, yeah. And there's nothing I regret about it." Another small silence falls between them before Joon speaks up again.
"Do you get where people are taking this?"
"No, quite frankly, I don't."
"Favoritism, like you two are taking advantage of each other for benefits. It's becoming so noticeable that people are talking."
"You and I both know how great of a student she is. If she's received opportunities, it's because she earned them herself, not because of me."
"That's not how it looks. And perception matters. You know this. Relationships like this are literally a ticking time bomb for your career, the bioengineering department." He's gonna use the excuse that Iseul pulled because for him, as department chair, as someone who needs to keep the glue together for this department, it's true.Â
"I don't even see how we're doing anything wrong when we're both adults. She and I both know what this isâ"
"That doesn't matter in this situation. There's a power dynamic here you can't ignore. Even if this is real, you hold her future in your hands. Do you understand?" Joon exhales, brows tightly knit together. "What about her fate in this whole situation? Do you care about that?"
"Of course I do. I care about her more than anything." San responds almost exasperatedly.
"Do you love her?"
"If I say yes?"
"Then, tell me. If you had to choose between your relationship or keeping her here, then what?" San sighs and runs his hand down his face. "Think about it. You deserve to be happy, but that girl also deserves a chance to keep going."
"Why can't we just keep it on the low, why do I have to choose? W-we can be more carefulâ"
"San, don't be stupid. I'm sure 'being careful' is how this all started, right?" Silence. "You know people are going to find out one way or another. It won't matter how real this is to you, to the both of you. She'll be branded as the professor's pet. Is that what you want for her? And you'll lose everythingâyour job, your reputation, ability to work at other institutions. Plus, the dean is still thinking about your program with Jongho and the real estate. This is going to trickle onto Jongho, too."
"No, of course not. And I don't want Jongho to take a fall because of me. But.." San sighs, his heart breaking the more this conversation goes on. He wasn't prepared to be here today, no. And he wasn't prepared for his mind to start thinking otherwise about your relationship, you. He was always sure of you, but now he's starting to feel like he's been too selfish;
Neglected you and your future plans. Your dreams, your goals.
"You're asking me to break this off. To break off my relationship with someone I truly care about and someone that genuinely makes me happy. Something I haven't felt in a long time."
"I'm sorry, San. I already told you how difficult this is, and it's not my intention to take your happiness away. I just need to protect you two from everyone, especially the dean. Please understand me and hear me. I'm asking you to protect her this way. If anything happens, it'll be the both of you going down and you know she doesn't deserve that either. "
"And If I don't do this?" San asks just to put the question out there.
"Then, can you call it love? Or is it just you being selfish?" San leans onto his knees, head falling into his hands. "I'm trying to come from a good place. Help me help you." He feels a headache coming on, thoughts running at a thousand miles per hour. He hates the thought of losing you; it makes him sick to his stomach. But, he can't even lie and say there isn't a piece of truth behind Namjoon's words.Â
Can San really say he loves you if he isn't doing the right thing for you? Is he being too selfish, assuming he could keep this on the low? Assuming he could be 'more' careful with you?
Is he selfish for wanting you by his side no matter what? Is he selfish for saying fuck it?
Is he selfish?
The last thing he wants to do is ruin your career, ruin you. Even if this will hurt like hell, he understands where Namjoon is coming from and knows he needs to put you first.
He's so conflicted. He has no idea what to do or how to move forward. Because as much as he knows he needs to do this for you and the sake of Namjoon, he doesn't want to.
He is scared.
"I need to head back to my office." San sighs and stands, but Namjoon follows closely.
"I don't have much time. I need to let them know that something is gonna be done and I need to prove it to them. You do hear me, right?"
"I do. IÂ just.. give me a little bit of time to think, Joon. Please." Namjoon just nods, meeting San's expression. He feels bad, he really does. And as his friend, this isn't something he wants to doâ but he has to. He could easily tell San to keep this on the low, to keep this a secret until things blow over but at some point, he doesn't trust himself to continue along with the story had anyone asked about it out of the blue.
Namjoon watches as San sadly walks off back to his office, eyes trained on the phone in his hand. San sees your texts, and usually, that'll be enough to put a smile on his face. He'll text back right away so you know he's been thinking about you; but today, he's thinking about you in a different light and he's not sure how to stomach it.
When he gets back to his office, he sees a few people from the lab lingering aroundâ even you. You meet his eyes and his eyes meet yours, but he doesn't give you a smile.
His eyes don't glow like they used to.
His cheeks aren't threatening to glow that cute, rosy tint they do when you're around.
He just steps in without doing anything to acknowledge your presence and that already feels way off.
you:Â đ you didn't even look my way when you walked back into the office and i haven't heard from you all day.
you:Â i hate how all my papers and presentations are due this week. plus ppl have been weird, idk. i just wanna cuddle đ
san:Â i'm sorry. it's just been a day.
you: that's never stopped you before... âšď¸ what's wrong, san?

Please get to the bottom of this; we received this tip last night about San and his student:
This should not be taken lightly if this is true...
âsummary: assistant professor in bioengineering, incredibly attractive, lonely and divorced; thatâs how most people describe san. but despite the events that have happened in his life, san has a lot going for himself. heâs a successful, sought out professor due to his brilliant contributions to science at just an early age of 32. he worked hard to get where he was now; head deep into his research, his publications, building his lab and creating a name for himself. everything was good and smooth sailingâ until it wasnât. because when he meets you, a bioengineering grad student interested in rotating in his lab, he finds himself ready to risk all the blood, sweat and tears he put in throughout the years just to keep you closeâ his need for you spiraling out of control like a wildfire.

san:Â goodmorning my love. i hope you slept well. i'm sorry to upset you last night, and i'm sorry i put you in that position. i wasn't thinking and acted impulsively. let me know if i can get a few mins with you at some point - i still wanna talk to you. i miss you, baby. have a good day today, okay?
You wake up a little later than expected, and it has you rushing out the door before you can even respond to San's text. You do feel bad for not responding right away but truthfully, you just needed to get your mind together and be in your own space to try and figure out what the hell was going on.
You were starting to get scared and you weren't sure where this would lead you and San. You knew what you were getting into, but the last thing you wanted was for San to get in troubleâ especially him, not you.
"Hey ma." You answer the call on your way to class, tugging your bag strap up on your shoulder.
"Hi lovey." She says cheerfully even though she's coming off of a shift.
"Did you just get off of work?" She sighs as she slams her car door and hops in, the call being picked up on the bluetooth.
"Yeah, we're a bit short-staffed so I picked up another shift. I came in around 7pm last night." You nod.
"Well, try to take it easy."
"I will. Are you on your way to class? How's it all going?"
"Um." You pause. "It's alright. But, yeah. I'm on my way over."
"Uh oh." She teases. "Wanna come home this weekend so you can tell me all about it while we get our nails done?"
"Actually, yeah. That sounds nice."
"Okay, babe." She chuckles. "You sure you're okay?" You nod even though you feel your heart drop, tears threatening to spill this early in the morning.
"Yeah, I am. I just have lots of stuff to update you on."
"Okay. Can't wait. Have a good day, hun. Make sure you take your breaks properly, eat and hydrate well."
"I will, mom. I love you."
"Love you too!" The call ends and you suddenly feel alone although the campus has moving parts, bodies floating around to move from point A to point B. You tuck your phone into your bag, fully deciding you'll get to San in between classes today. You do plan to stop by the lab to wean your mice really quickly at some point; maybe you'll deal with San then.
Which is crazy to think about cause that's exactly how things unfold.
Your first class of the day drags on, the lecture today being packed with a ton of overwhelming information. You've already got a few assignments for this class alone, causing you to huff out a heavy sigh when you write it all down in your planner and try to organize your to-do list. When class finally wraps up, you take your time packing up before heading to lab to work on the mice. You grab a parfait to go, quietly eating away as you make your way to the basement. The very back door to the west wing basement is the closest to the cafĂŠ you grabbed the parfait from, so you easily make your way over and toss your empty cup into the trash just as you tackle the steps and head downstairs to the door. When you pull out your badge and get ready to tap it against the reader, the door swings open and causes you to jump aside to prevent yourself from getting hit.
"Oh, I'm sorryâ" San stops in his steps. "Y/N?"
"San." You breathe out, clutching your bag tighter. You weren't expecting to run into him now, but you suppose the universe had other plans for you.
"Hey." He fully steps outside and lets the door shut close. You can't help but automatically glance at him from head to toe; he's wearing denim on denim, and you realize he's the only person who could truly pull off the look. He's got on a denim button-up and jeans, chucks. Sleeves are rolled up halfway. He digs his hands into his pockets, soft black hair framing his face. You can smell his cologne from where you stand.
You're not standing very far from him when you should be creating more distance.
"Hi."
"Going into lab?"
"For a second, yeah. I gotta wean my mice before my PI gets mad at me." You look up at him and he chuckles a bit, biting onto his lip.
"For the record, I could never be mad at you." You slightly scoff and playfully roll your eyes.Â
"Sure, Professor Choi." You pause. "I'm sorry I haven't responded to your text. I was meaning to come see you later, but I guess now is a good time, too?"Â
"Uh, yeah. I gotta meet Jongho and Namjoon to plan out this proposal for the space in the new building." You nod. "But, it's not for a bit. Was just gonna grab some food before heading over."
"Goodluck."
"Thanks, love." He clears his throat. "Wanna give me a quick run down of what happened yesterday? With Yunho and Iseul?"
"Don't let me get in the way of you getting food."
"You're not. I can always grab some after."
"Are you sure?" He nods.
"You're more important." He lets out a breath. "So, what happened?"
"Yunho said he thought he saw me at the conference, that's all. I know he was gonna try to get it out of me, but students started walking into class."
"I didn't even know he was there."
"Well, I clearly didn't either. He said he stopped by last minute cause he was in the area." San sighs. "Iseul knew about it, too. I saw the way she looked at me when I walked out." You look up at him with innocent eyes, and it makes him weak. "San, we need to be more careful and this isn't helping."
"Well, that's why I wanted you to come over so we could talk about this in private. Why haven't you texted me back, angel? I know there's a reason. Are you still angry with me?" He asks so gently and so sweetly it makes your knees buckle. But at this very moment, Iseul is passing by the stairway, on her way back to the office after a meeting in the west wing of the Harvey Center. She doesn't typically pass this way but today, the conference room was closer to the back end, and she wanted to stop by the nearby cafĂŠ to grab another cup of coffeeâ excited to try the seasonal flavors on the menu that just arrived.
As she passes the stairway that leads towards the very back west wing basement door, she hears muffled talking echoing from below and can't necessarily help herself.
"IÂ just.. don't know right now, San. It feels like everything is crumbling and I don't know how to feel. Jiung knows, and he thinks you forced me into this for the labâ"
"What? You told him that wasn't true, right?" His tone rises slightly, but it's enough for you to remind him to keep it down. It's also enough for Iseul to just slightly peek over the edge to confirm who is speaking near the back end basement doors;
And of course it's you and San.
No one ever passes through this way, and of course San would be taking that opportunity.
"Obviously." You sigh. "I'm just saying, people are onto us. The happy hour thing was probably the cherry on top."
"I got angry and I acted on impulse, I'm sorry." He reaches for your hand and as much as you wanna hold onto it tightly, you can't. You just let him take it in his, his lips lightly grazing the surface of your hand. "Can we take this to my office?"
"I thought you were on your way out."
"And I told you I've got a few minutes to spare. Please?" He pleads and you simply nod, removing your hand from his hold just as he badges in and leads the way to his office. Iseul lets out a breath as she continues on her way, texting her husband the exact scene that just unfolded in front of her.
iseul: i just saw san and y/n talking by the basement doors. he was holding her hand and kissing it.
yunho: so what now?
iseul: i told you i'm gonna try to catch san later. if he doesn't wanna admit to it then i'm going to namjoon.
yunho: iseul.
iseul: yunho, no. i can see the look you're giving me already. they're being way too obvious on campus now, and he better be grateful that i'm just trying to look out for him.
yunho: okay.
That's all Yunho replies with because what else can he say? He knows Iseul is stubborn, and he knows she won't change her mind. He agrees that it's wrong but he's not sure if they're overstepping.
Maybe Iseul really was looking out for him. He'd like to give her the benefit of the doubt because she's right.
This is wrong.
He's convinced this is all wrong because of her.
When you get to the basement, it's as empty as can be and you couldn't even be more relieved while trailing behind San. He looks down at his watch again, fiddling with the door lock and handle before he swings it open.
"Are you sure you even have enough time to spare?" You ask as he locks the door and makes his way over to you.
"Swear."
"We should make this quick before people come back to the basement."
"You know people are always in and out of here."
"Still."
"Why are you upset, love? Talk to me."
"I just don't know what to do. Your ex seems to be onto us the most, and they probably saw the whole thing go down yesterday. You were like.. angry-angry, San, and it was obviousâ" You don't even realize you're going on and on about the same thing until San cups your cheeks, softly shushing you; trying to keep the peace by easing you.
"Baby." He says softly, his eyes looking into yours. "Baby, don't worry about this right now. I'm sure it will all blow overâ"
"And if it doesn't?"
"Then, I'll face it when the time comes butâ"
"San."
"We'll figure it out." He reassures again, even though truthfully and honestly, he's not sure what that means. He's not sure what he'll do if it actually unfolds out of hand, he's not sure what he'll tell you if things do go wrong. He's not sure how he'll be able to salvage everything even if he wants to more than anything in this worldÂ
He just doesn't work on empty promises like that.
"I'll never let anything happen to you. I'll take care of this." He adds.
"I don't want anything to happen to you, though." He sighs and shakes his head.
"Nothing will. Justâ just trust me like you've already been doing, okay?"
"Okay." You respond softly, hands resting on his wrists as he continues to cup your cheeksâ thumb caressing the surface while his eyes roam over your features.
"I'm sorry for yesterday and I'm sorry you've been upset."
"It's alright."
"I missed you."
"I'm sorry, Sannie. I just needed a moment."
"You don't have to apologize, sweetheart." He kisses the tip of your nose before chuckling. "Although, I'll still beat his ass for trying to put his hands on you the way he did."
"He was such a dumbass." You roll your eyes. "I am grateful for you being there in time, though."
"Yeah, well. Couldn't really do much, but I'm glad you ended up okay." He's still looking at you, his thumb now lightly tracing your bottom lip. He looks deep into your eyes and he can't help but feel like mush; knees getting weak, heart melting at the way he looks at you. He prays to God nothing happens with all this going on because he's afraid to lose you.
He's afraid he can't lose you.
When he looks at you, he feels a sense of calmness. He sees the affection and adoration swirling in those orbs of yours. Your entire being radiating warmth and love. He'd hate for Iseul and Yunho to take away the one thing that has finally kept him grounded. But, he wouldn't put it past them and that's what scares him the most.
They hadn't stopped to think about their actions before. And for someone like San, who loves so hard and trusts wholeheartedly, he just didn't think the love of his life and his bestfriend would ever do that to him.
This is how everything has unfolded and he'd hate for them to be the reason behind all of this, too.
"Baby." He calls for you, and you don't respond verbally. The way he's looking at you, the way he's holding you, caressing you and keeping you close, is enough for you to dip forward and meet him in a sweet kiss. You hear him exhale as he cups your cheeks and takes the kiss, deepening it as you stand in the middle of his office. Your hands grip at his sides as your tongue fights for dominance with his, the kiss easily turning into a sloppy, wet mess. "Fuck, baby." He sighs. "Need you."
"Here?" He nods. He rushes over to his chair, bringing you onto his lap. His eyes are full of desire, lustâ pleading for you to give him all of you. "Sannie."
"We'll make it quick." He smirks, hands coming up your thighs to hike up your maxi skirt just enough; thumb immediately finding your clothed core. "No one's around. Just us." You shut your eyes in pleasure, already aching, craving, for him bad. "You do know how to keep quiet, right?" He teases, watching as you continue to react to the way he's touching you.
"Mmâ shouldn't I be asking you?" You tease back, fiddling with his belt and undoing his jeans to release his heavy, hard cock.Â
"Brat." He chuckles. "Ride me."Â
"So demanding." You playfully roll your eyes the moment you position his cock at your entrance, shutting them close when you ease down his length. He lets out a soft, breathless groan, head cocked back against the chair as he tries to adjust to the feeling. "Fuck, San."
"Yeah, baby. It's all yours." He whispers, looking at you through hooded lids. You pick up your pace, working your hips back and forth; dragging your walls against his member. You let out a quiet moan against his lips, San whispering a string of cuss words as you roll your hipsâ
Driving him to insanity.
"Missed you so much. My perfect girl." He mutters. He can't even help himself when he feels you tighten around him, letting out a moan that might be a little too loud for your liking.Â
"Sannie." You whine a bit, covering his mouth with your hand as you continue to push and push towards the edge, clit rubbing against him so deliciously you feel like you'll come undone sooner than later. You watch as San's face contorts in pleasureâ pretty brows knitting together, tightly as his eyes shut close. He's murmuring small moans against the palm of your hand, whining and begging for you to cum first because you always come first.
And it doesn't take long before you do.
Your movements become sloppy while San continues to grip your ass in an attempt to help guide you; his cock filling you up perfectly as you bounce up and down before resorting back to rolling your hips against him. It takes two, three, four turns before you press your forehead against San's and unravel in his hold.Â
"Ohhhhâfuckâgonna cumâ" You gasp just as San fucks upward into you once, twiceâ releasing his load into you and filling you up with every last bit. He lets out choked moans against your hand, panting and heavily breathing when you feel like it's safe to finally remove it.
"Good god, sweetheart." He breathes. "I'll never get tired of this." You giggle, kissing him sweetly on the lips before slowly removing yourself from his length. You both let out small breaths, San keeping you near so he can wipe you down with a napkin before tending to himself.Â
"Hopefully no one's in the basement still." You fix your skirt and get yourself together.
"Uh, not like you had anything to worry about. You seemed to have that under control the entire time." You laugh.
"Taking precautionary measures since we need to."
"That was kinda fun, though." San smirks. "Maybe we should do that more often." He stands to adjust his jeans and fixes his belt.
"Did our little fight just go over your head?" You joke and he sighs.
"Fine." He playfully rolls his eyes. "We'll just keep it to the bedroom."
"You're so annoying." You smile. "You should get to your meeting before you end up being late."
"I will, boss lady." He puckers his lips. "Just one more." You shake your head and meet him for another kiss.
"Bye Professor Choi."Â
"Bye baby." He smiles, subtly biting onto his bottom lip as he watches you sway your hips and walk out. As soon as the door shuts, he feels empty. He misses you already and he can't wait to spend time with you again.
"Oh shitâSunwoo!" You almost shriek just as you come out of San's office. You're afraid he might've heard something, or that he might even sense it, see it on you, with the way he cocks a brow up and tilts his head to the side. "You scared me." He laughs, though it's obvious he's kinda confused as to why you're so startled by his presence.
"You okay?"Â
"Mhm." You hum.
"Meeting with Professor Choi?" He gives you a look again and you feel like your ass is on fire. Sunwoo has probably gotten wind of the whole thing and now he's trying to read you.
"Just a quick last minute check-in."
"Oh, that's nice he let you pop in. Everything all good with your progress and stuff? Think you'll stay so you can continue being my right hand?" You laugh and shrug.Â
"Maybe. We'll see. But yeah, all is well!" You look at your phone. "Anyway, gonna run off to wean the mice before class." He nods, watching as you hurriedly drop your things off at your desk and scurry along without looking back.
âFLASHBACK
"So, did you hear about Professor Choi getting hella angry over some postdoc at the happy hour event? I guess he was getting handsy with Y/N and was being a total dick."
"Okay? So, he deserved it."
"Yeah, but people there said it was weird."
"How is sticking up for someone weird?"
"No like, guys. He was angry. Like the type to get angry over your girlfriend, angry."
"What are you insinuating?" Belle cocks a brow up.
"I'm so surprised you guys haven't heard about it. It's like the talk on campus right now. People think Professor Choi and Y/N are a thing. Professor Lee and Professor Jeong are also apparently fueling hella shit behind it."
"That's ridiculous, Y/N would never. That'd never happen." Belle tries to laugh it off until she sees Sunwoo sitting quietly in his chair. "Right?" Sunwoo looks at her and shrugs. "Sunwoo."
"Dude, I don't know. I've just seen Y/N go into his office a few times and I thought they were meeting about projects. But, now that I think about it.."
"Are you serious?" Belle furrows her brows. She's slightly annoyed that you'd actually take it this far, and she's not sure how she feels about it if it were true. "Is she trying to secure her spot in lab that bad? She wanted him to like her so bad she had to sleep with him?" Sunwoo knits his forehead at her.
"Yo, hold on. You don't even know if it's true. Even if it is, I'm sure there's a story behind it and not just that. Y/N wouldn't do that."
"We didn't expect her to be wrapped up in rumors like this, too." Belle scoffs. "Wow. If their so-called relationship ends up being true, bet it was because Y/N threw herself on him."
"That's fucked up. She's your friend, Belle."
"Not really, we just knew each other because of school and now we work together."
"Belle."
"What? You really can't tell me you don't think that? You're lying."
"No?! Belle, what?" Sunwoo's tone grows. "I'm saying they're two grown ass adults who are capable of making their own decisions. I'm not dismissing it or saying it's right, but I'm saying there could be more to it than that. Why are you assuming that so quickly?"
"Whatever, Sunwoo. It's gross, regardless. Especially for her as his rotation student." She rolls her eyes. "God, can't wait for it to be over so I don't have to deal with her." Sunwoo starts packing his things and shaking his head.
"That's crazy." Sunwoo chuckles a bit. "She was your friend before anything, bro. I'd expect you to at least have her back." He scoffs a bit. "I gotta go, I got shit to tend to with Y/N. Cause you know, I don't just switch up on people without having my facts straight." He almost mocks Belle's attitude as he throws the peace sign up to his other friend and starts walking off.
âEND
After you tend to the mice, San gathers himself and heads out of the basement to head to the bathroom and freshen up before grabbing a quick snack on his way to Namjoon's office. On his way out, he didn't see anyone in the basement; Sunwoo must have gone to hide in one of the rooms to do some work. He's able to whisk himself away without any issues, prancing into Namjoon's office in a better mood.
Jongho definitely picks up on it, but doesn't comment on it. So doesn't Namjoon, but he needed to make use of his time wisely since he's got a busy ass schedule today.
They have a good conversation and are able to draft out some very good points about letting Jongho and San take some real estate in the new building. Namjoon is always good with words and although he's taking quick notes on his laptop, he's making a mental note on how they should present this to the dean. He has a good feeling about it, and he thinks it's perfect timing because the dean has been wondering about other ways to foster good collaboration between schools and departments and how to make their programs a little more unique and prestigious compared to others.
San is coming out of his day way better than yesterday, way better than he expected this morning.
Too bad it's all about to go out the window again.
When San heads back to his office, he powers through his check-in meetings with a select few postdocs and grad studentsâ discussing different avenues they could take with their projects and what their goals should be by the end of the quarter. Afterwards, he finishes the remaining items on his to-do list before sending out his last emails of the day and packing up.
you:Â can i come over tonight?
san:Â course you can, baby. you don't have to ask. lol
you:Â yes, i do. lol. okay, see you later? i have office hours then i'll wrap it up for the day.
san:Â sounds good, beautiful. i'll have dinner ready for us, k? just come over as soon as you can.
you: âşď¸
He smiles to himself as he slings the bag strap over his shoulder, excited to tell you about how the meeting went today and how optimistic he's feeling about everything despite the chaos that has ensued.
Maybe things will be okay after all.
Right?
"San. Can we talk?" Iseul catches him as he steps out onto the first floor of the Harvey Center from the elevator. He furrows his brows at her, unsure what in the hell she could possibly wanna talk to him about right now.
Well, scratch thatâ he knows, but he's also not sure why she's the one doing the talking on this. It's kinda ironic coming from her. But, San isn't gonna be rude nor is he gonna be a dick to her, especially on campus grounds.Â
So, he lets out a sigh and shrugs.
"Sure." He plainly says, leading the way to one of the empty conference rooms down the hall. He sets his bag down on a chair before crossing his arms to his chest, distancing himself from Iseul on the other end of the room. "What's up?"
"You're seeing her, aren't you?"
"What are you talking about?" Is all he can defend himself with because he's truly appalled she's doing the talking on this when it shouldn't be any of her businessâ
"That's crazy. All this time and effort to keep her around and you couldn't even do that for me." San's brows knit together so tightlyâ he's not sure what the fuck he's hearing right now.
"We're bringing this up because why exactly? Even if we hadn't worked out, you still found your way with Yunho." She rolls her eyes.
"You're being so stupid, San. How are you so comfortable dating your student? You could lose everything if anyone found out."
"I don't see why this is any of your business."
"Because if you aren't gonna get your shit together, I have no choice but to go to Namjoonâ"
"You can't actually be seriousâ"
"Ask yourself that! You're so hung up over her that you're willing to give up everything for your little relationship." She pauses. "She's young, she's got the doe-eyed look going on. Seems sweet, but she probably doesn't even actually care about you. Get real, San. Wake the hell up!"
"Iseul, you're treading on very thin ice." He warns. "You still haven't told me what any of this has to do with you." He steps forward.
"It has nothing to do with me. It has to do with the fact that I'm trying to do the right thing. You know this is wrong." San scoffs and pathetically chuckles, hands dug deep into his pants.
"Does it make you happy, Iseul?" San almost corners her. "Does it make you that fucking happy to keep destroying everything for me?"
"No one destroyed anything for you, you continuously do that for yourself!"
"You're the only person who has ever painted me as a failure and disappointment. You don't get to do that now, you don't get to have a say in any of this!"
"She's a fucking student, San. What's wrong withâ"
"And he was my bestfriend!" San finds himself seeing red as his tone grows. All of the happy, good luck shit he was feeling today went out the window in one swift motion. He should've known Iseul would've taken this road. He should've known she would've done this.
For some reason, Iseul continues to be the reason why he can't be happy.
"Hey." Yunho walks into the conference room. "You two are gonna need to keep it down." San can't help but roll his eyes because of course.
Of fucking course.
"Great to see you've been invited to this unnecessary discussion." San looks at the both of them.
"Unnecessary?!â" Iseul fires back.
"Iseul." Yunho calls for her sternly.
"Whatever, you know what? I tried. You do whatever you want, San. Risk all your shit for some student who won't give a damn once it's all been taken away. All she wants from you is your resources and to move up, but I guess that's what you wantedâ"
"You know nothing about her!" San growls back. "You know absolutely nothing about her." He repeats.
"Iseul." Yunho calls for her again. This time, there's a lace of anger because this was not what he wanted out of this. He warned Iseul about getting into San's business and she wouldn't listenâ now they were all here, arguing over shit when there's already so much bad blood and tension between the three of them. "Can you please just wait outside?" She huffs and clicks her teeth, grabbing her things before storming out.
"Yunho, honestly. Save it. We don't have to do this."
"San, she's right. You could get into a lot of trouble if people start putting the pieces of the puzzle together. People are already onto you after the happy hour event, and I can't exactly say you two have been the most discreet."
"What are you even talking about?" San asks, exasperated and completely over the conversation.
"You two by the basement doors?"
"Oh, so you guys are just spying on us?" San cocks a brow up. "Really makes it better."
"It could have been anyone."
"Could it have been? Exactly how long were you guys watching us?" Yunho sighs.
"I'm only looking out for youâ"
"And what makes you think I want you looking out for me, Yunho?" San's tone grows. "Hm? Cause last time you ended up looking out for me, I found you tangled up with my wife." Yunho's jaw ticks, but he doesn't say anything else. Because what can he say?
"You know this will fuck up everything for you." Is all Yunho responds with. "Everything."
"So be it. Sorry, but I literally have no reason to listen to you. Or her." San pauses, his jaw clenching as he swallows thickly. Borderline aching from how hard he's been clenching. "I hope that one day the both of you will finally learn how to mind your own business. Stop coming into mine. We're not friends, we're not acquaintances, we're nothing. We haven't been anything for a very long time and I'd appreciate it if we kept it that way." San grabs his things and rushes out the door, the force almost causing the door to hit the wall on his way out.
"San?" Namjoon comes from around the corner as he watches San walk out of the conference room, loosening his tie as he tries to gather himself. To be honest, he had been standing there for a good minute trying to make sense of the arguing and loud talking going on within the conference room. It didn't take him long to realize who was inside and what exactly was being discussedâ especially when Iseul storms out, mumbling a few cuss words and San slander to herself. Luckily, not too many people were around, and if they were, they didn't try to focus much of their attention on their whereabouts. Namjoon is lost because he doesn't have any actual concrete facts to have a say in this. Maybe the happy hour event. Sanâs little antics.
He does need to get to the bottom of it, though.
Before it all goes south and it comes raining down on San, on him.
"Not right now, Joon. I'm sorry. I gotta get home." Namjoon doesn't say anything else as he watches San hurry off, needing to take a break from this place and get some fresh air ASAP.
"The hell is going on?" Namjoon mumbles to himself before nodding to a few oncoming students when he slowly walks back to his office and pulls out his phone to send a few texts.
If not today, he sure as hell is getting to the bottom of all of this tomorrow.
San hasn't felt this angry in so, so long, and quite frankly, it scares him. He's afraid of reverting back to his old self, his old way of coping. He's afraid of taking the wrong step forward that'll undo all the progress and work he's done on himself.
But truthfully, he fucking hates this.
He fucking hates this because at this point, he feels like it'll only bring more anger. Sadness. Hurt,
He hates that Yunho and Iseul are getting under his skin this way, he hates the predicament you're both in, he hates that Namjoon was there. He hates that he knows this is wrong but he absolutely refuses to let you goâ
Even though, he's starting to feel like he needs to rethink those choices.
Mainly because he doesn't want anything to happen to you, mainly because he wants you to succeed and be happy. Mainly because he wants to protect you and keep pushing you forward; even if that means he has to support from afar.
He fucking hates this.
San drives with one hand on the wheel, finger brushing against his bottom lip as all the thoughts run at a thousand miles per hour in his head. He knows it's wishful thinking to assume it'll all blow over and be yesterday's news that didn't really mean much. He feels like it's far from that, and he knows Namjoon is eventually going to talk to him about everything.
He wishes he can hold on for a little longer, push it out a bit more.
Despite his feelings and how shot his mood is, San still manages to stop by for some aburasobaâ remembering how you've mentioned time and time again that you had been craving it. He makes a pitstop at a random flower shop nearby, grabbing a small bouquet of baby pink roses. He gives the florist a small smile when she asks him if it's for a special someone, his dimples poking out; heart fluttering, butterflies swarming his tummy when he thinks about you.
And only you.
He wishes he could give you the world without having to hide it. There are so, so many things he wishes he could do or say that don't involve him acting behind doors or away from people.
This shit truly is hard.
When he finally pulls into his garage and parks, he sits in the seat for a little and huffs out a heavy sigh. He grabs his things and sets the food and bouquet down on the island counter before heading upstairs to shower. He gets comfortable in sweats and a matching crewneck, heading back down to the kitchen to get everything set up and ready for your arrival. You let him know you'll be over in the next few minutes, so he lights up a candle and gets the TV goingâ leaving it on the home page so that you can freely choose what you're in the mood for.
"Hi!" You greet in a sing-song tone as you let yourself in and walk into the kitchen. San is washing some dishes, which gives you the opportunity to hug him from behind and place a chaste kiss to the back of his neck. He chuckles, sinking into your hold before you pull away. "Aburasoba?" You gasp. "And pink roses?" You turn again just as he wipes his hands down and faces you. "Thank you, Sannie." Your bottom lip pokes out in a small pout.
"Of course, baby." He playfully runs a finger down your bottom lip and smiles. "How was the rest of your day? Sounded like you ran into Sunwoo after you left?"Â
"Oh my god, yeah. But, I don't think he really caught onto anything. I just told him we met real quick then left, and he didn't question it." You sigh. "But otherwise, the rest of the day was good. Exhausting. I had tons of students coming into office hours so I ended up being done a little later than expected."
"Planning their proposals for finals?" You nod.
"Yup!"
"I know the feeling." You laugh, helping him grab the bowls and taking it over to the living room. You plop next to him on the couch, already flipping through options for tonight. You settle for rewatching The Walking Dead, San chuckling at your pick to sit through while eating dinner. You manage to yap away in between bites of your aburasoba, San only humming or giving you short answers in response.
At first, you don't think much about it. You assume he's exhausted and he's trying his best to keep you company like the good man he is. But then, you turn and he's not really watching. He's kinda scrolling through his phone, setting it aside then blankly looking at the TV. It's obvious San isn't entirely present. It's obvious he's got things in his mind, and you're not sure if you did anything wrong or if something happened in between the time you two were apartâ
But, he seems unhappy and you wish you could fix whatever it is.
"Babe."Â
"Hm?" He hums.
"What's wrong?" You turn over to look at him, cupping his cheek while you crawl onto his lap.
"Nothing." He chuckles and rubs your back, eyes looking deep into yours. All he sees is a personification of love, comfort. And nothing is harder than fighting the 'what if's' in his head when you look at him the way you do, when you touch him the way you do. "Nothing baby, sorry. I'm just really exhausted." He doesn't like to lie, but he sees the soft smile that grows on your face when you receive his reassurance and he can't help but brush it under the rug.
"You sure?"
"Yeah." He nods. "Yeah, baby." Though, he isn't.Â
"Okay." You kiss him on the lips and caress his cheek, smiling at him. His heart aches because he thinks about all the moments you've had to share secretly or behind doors, not being able to put your relationship out there like you both wish to. He finally lets the 'what if's' free, thinking about how this could affect your future, you;
He can't help but feel like, maybe, you deserved better than this.
If I knew better Iseul is jealous cos y/n has the better version of San she never had cos why is she so nosy for someone who cheated on him with his own bestfriend.

"So, how was it?" Jiung asks, walking alongside of you as the two of you slowly walk over to the Gates Biology Building, where Yunho's class was being held. You sip on your cup of coffee, dragging your feet while you look ahead to the building in view.
"What, the conference?" Jiung nods. "It was okay! Nothing too fancy."
"You didn't see any other people there?"
"Not really, no. I think this was a relatively smaller conference compared to the others."
"Did you get to talk to Professor Choi much?" He looks down at his feet, wondering if you'd open up about anything that could potentially give him clues. But, you resort to a simpleâ
"Nope." Jiung is looking at your necklace now. "Just said hi in passing." You avoid eye contact.
"I see." He tries to read your body language but it isn't giving him anything. He's just not sure why you're keeping it so vague and brief, though. That's unusual. Plus, the fact that you can barely maintain eye contact with him. "That's a nice necklace, by the way. Is it new?" He points at it.
"Mhm. I got it down there." You touch the necklace with a small smile.
"It's cute. It suits you."
"That's what the lady told usâ" You catch yourself. "Me, too. I mean." Jiung furrows his brows.
"Us?"
"The other shoppers around." You quickly throw out just as you get to the front of the Gates Biology Building. "Thanks for walking me." You playfully ruffle his hair and he chuckles.
"Mmyeah. See you later for the happy hour event?" You nod.
"Have a good rest of your day." You wave him off as you walk backwards and head into the lobby. He stands there for a second, waiting until you fully disappear into the elevator and off to the classroom, turning on his heel while replaying the conversation in his head.
You don't feel the same to him, and he knows it's because you're hiding something. You weren't always great at lying or keeping up with a façade because that just wasn't you. For you to be doing it means there's something tied to it that means a lot to you, something you're trying to protect, and Jiung is now convinced that something is Professor Choi.
It's only a matter of time until he finds out one way or another, and he's not sure how to feel about it. It could either go badly or end up worse; he's afraid you'll end up hurt at the end of it, and he's afraid everything you've worked for will be taken away from you so, so quickly.
Meanwhile, when you drag yourself into the classroom, you're startled by the sight of Yunho on his laptop, sitting at the table in front of the classroom.
"Oh, hey!" He says, typing away. "Hope you don't mind me joining in for journal club today." You shrug with a small chuckle, setting your things off to the side while Yunho comfortably sits back in the chair. Your eyes quickly skim his get-up for today, which is pretty casual: dark jeans, a long sleeve top and chucks. He doesn't say much while you're getting things ready on the projector, typing away on his phone in between scanning your figure. He's trying to see if anything looks or feels off with you, and so far, it doesn't.
San is careful as can be, he supposes.
"It is your class, Professor Jeong." He smiles a bit and nods.
"So, how was your weekend?" You yawn into your arm and shrug.Â
"It was okay. I came back from a trip. Felt too short."
"Mm." Yunho hums. "Where'd you go, if you don't mind me asking?" He's eyeing your features as you sift through your notes.
"Just drove out a few hours with my mom." You avoid eye contact as you go through today's paper and prepare some discussion points for class.
"Oh." Yunho nods. "That sounds nice." His eyes land on your necklace and it looks too familiarâ which is probably because he almost bought that same necklace for Iseul on Hiro this past weekend.
Maybe San isn't all that careful cause he swears he sees the faint hickey at the base of your neck from this angle. The longsleeve top you're wearing covers it for the most part, if you're paying attention.
"What about you?" You look at him and see that his eyes have landed on your necklace before they move up to meet your eyes.
"I was actually at Hiro for a couple of things, then went to the BAS conference for a bit." Your heart drops and suddenly, the room feels incredibly hot. You completely avoid eye contact with him now, sifting through your notes to finalize the discussion points for today. "I thought I saw you there with San."
"No?" Is all you manage to say, but it's enough for Yunho to catch onto everything.
"You weren't?" You look at him, and his expression is blank. All you can do is pretend to play it off and shake your head, hoping he'd let it go.
"Not me." Your response is barely above a whisper, and all Yunho can do is let out a breath. He knows.
"Y/N." His expression switches and you can see the concern on his face. "Can I askâ"
"Morning Professor Jeong and Y/N!" A student comes in and plops into his usual seat, followed by another student, and another.Â
Thank god.
"Sorry, you were saying?" You look at him cluelessly, making him shake his head in response.
"Nothing. I'll let you take it from here." He gives you a small smile, eyes now glued onto the students ahead. You give them a few minutes, waiting for the stragglers to trickle in and get settled before you call their attention to the front and begin today's journal club paper discussion.
Yunho, for the most part, keeps to himself during class, chiming in when he wants to clarify a point or to encourage the class to bring more discussion to the table. Yunho thinks you're a great TA, and he sees that the students are comfortable with you. He hates that he's so conflicted because of many things: one, he's not sure entirely about the situation. Two, his gut feeling makes him feel sure but he doesn't know how to approach it. Three, he knows you're an incredibly bright and smart personâ you'd get along with anyone and truly, he hasn't had any issues with you despite his last minute requests for classes or assignments.
Four, maybe he just needs to let this go and stop meddling.
Five, you would've known what you were getting into right?
But, he's reminded otherwise when class wraps up an hour and 15 minutes laterâ a brutal reminder otherwise. He sees you packing up and getting your things together, clinging onto your phone just as you grab your bag and sling it over your shoulder. As you turn on your heel, you almost collide straight into Iseul.
You look at her, and she looks at you.
Her eyes glaze over your features, landing on your neck, that necklace.
"Excuseâ" You try to brush past her, but she gives you a small smile and steps in your way.
"Hi Y/N, how's class with Yunho been?" You look at her because you have never spoken a word to her, nor did you have a reason to. But, out of respect [especially on campus], you give her a faint smile before responding.
"Good." You simply respond as she nods.
"And how's your rotation with San? Sure he's been treating you well?" She tilts her head to the side, almost like she's mocking you. Almost like the answer is written all over your face, your neck; her eyes are there again and you can't help but tug up and adjust your top more.
"Very."Â
"That's good to hear, I expected as much. He's pretty good about building relationships with his lab members." She gives you a small smirk before stepping aside, slowly making her way to Yunho behind you. He stands there, hand slipped into his pocket while he cocks his brow at her. You don't even take another moment to look at them, instead quickly walking out of the room to text San and make your way over to your next class of the day.
you:Â san.
san:Â uh oh. lol what did i do? đ
you: no it's not that. âšď¸
san:Â what is it, baby? do you wanna come into my office in a bit? i'm wrapping up at the faculty meeting.
you:Â no, it's okay. i just finished class with yunho and i think he knows. well, him and iseul.
san:Â what, why do you say that?
san:Â not like i care about what they have to say or whatever.
you: san, you should. đŤ¤
san:Â alright, i'm sorry. you're right. but what did they say, baby? do you wanna wait until i see you later?
you:Â yunho just said he thought he saw us at the BAS conference, but i know he did. his tone and look said so. he was just trying to get it out of me. and iseul.. i don't know. it was just weird.
san:Â we'll talk about this later tonight then, okay? it'll be okay. don't worry about them.
you: okay. 𼺠are you going to the happy hour thing?
san:Â wasn't planning on it but i know namjoon's text is gonna come sooner or later. going with your friends?
you: mhm. i'll see you later tonight if you don't go?
san: soooo long. wanna pop into my office in a bit?Â
you: sannie. lol i'm headed to my next class then i'm going to meet up with jiung and them afterwards.
san: for 2 seconds. đ
You playfully roll your eyes and smile as you text back, already walking over to class.
you: you're still wrapping up at the faculty meeting and i'm headed to class. i don't think we'll have 2 seconds, professor choi.
san: booooooo.
you: see you later. đ
san: âšď¸ mean.
You giggle to yourself, tucking your phone into your pocket as you head to class; forgetting the tense, awkward moments that just occurred between Yunho and Iseul.
"Why'd you have to do that, hm?" Yunho asks her, grabbing his bag from the floor before walking alongside of her.
"Was just trying to see how she'd react. I'm sure she didn't tell you anything about her trip?"
"No. Said she went away with her mom for the weekend, so." Iseul chuckles.
"Of course. Someone I know said they definitely saw San leaving with her at the conference. Kinda makes sense now, doesn't it?" She looks up at him. "Y/N folded when I mentioned him, her body language completely changed."
"Iseul." Yunho looks at her. "What are you trying to do here? All I was gonna do was ask her, not interrogate or attack her."
"I'm trying to get you to do the right thing. They're dating, Yunho. It's obvious. I saw the way she tugged on her top, too. I'm sorry but she's not slick." He sighs.
"I don't know, I don't wanna start this whole thing. What if it isn't even that serious, or what if we're completely wrongâ"
"Everything about this is serious regardless of what angle you look at it. It's wrong." She says. "You don't have to talk to San, but I will. They need to know." He sighs heavily, no longer knowing how to respond to her about the whole issue.
You meet up with your friends outside in the middle of the Harvey Center courtyard, where all the activities are set up appropriately for the happy hour event taking place. They've got cornhole competitions set up on the lawn nearby, another station to decorate university tumblers, and another for quick but fun board games. They've got a bunch of pizza boxes sitting out on tables, beer and canned wine next to it. You and your friends help yourself to a few slices before grabbing your drinks of choice for the night. They've got string lights to add to the atmosphere, the evening being clear but chilly.
"Finally! We relax all together again!" Felix says, tapping his can against yours before you all drink and start to indulge in tonight's happy hour festivities.Â
"Our baby's finally here, too!" Eunchae squeezes you, hugging you tightly and making you laugh as she clings onto your arm.
"I know, Y/N. You've been so MIA." Felix looks at you with his usual puppy eyes, bottom lip slightly poking out. "What's been going on?"
"I've been busy with the lab, honestly. Trying to put in as much work as I can before the rotation ends."
"It's like you're practically living there." Felix jokes.
"How come you haven't been working with Sunwoo, though? He said you've been on your own schedule and stuff." Jiung asks.
"We're just focusing on different aspects right now. Plus, I've been trying to help Belle out as much as I can, too."
"Okay but, make time for us, too. Live your life!" Eunchae preaches. "You're here with us now, so let's enjoy it." So, you do. You do exactly that with your friends and a bunch of other people who swung by from different departments. Today's happy hour event is the liveliest you've ever seen itâ tons of friends and people swarming from different departments and areas just to take a break from everything and mingle.
You and your friends hang out with familiar and new faces, all of you sitting around and drinking while one half played games and the others talked about school, work. Life. San and his friends join eventually, talking to a few students as they hang around amongst themselves. You giggle to yourself seeing San put on a face cause it's obvious he's not entirely in the mood. But, he's here. So, are his friends; Professor Kim being the social butterfly out of them all, per usual.
"So, Y/N. Tell me about the stuff you've been doing in Professor Choi's lab. I heard you've been up to some crazy stuff from Sunwoo and Belle." Hae-jin, a postdoc in another lab, pulls his chair closer to yours and looks you in the eye. At first, the conversation is fun, it's lively. You're in good spirits conversing with the guy, laughing and poking fun at campus life and being a grad student vs. postdoc.
But, Hae-jin keeps drinking.
And he keeps drinking.
Then his true intentions start coming out and you're no longer having a good time talking to the guy.
A few people are drunk enough to start a fun little dance floor in the middle of the courtyard while the speakers blast music, Eunchae, Felix and Jiung also grabbing you to join them as you sing along to the song. You facetime call Jurin while she's away, letting her know much you miss her. The call ends after 5 minutes, Jurin sadly waving while she heads off to dinner with her parents for their anniversary celebration.
"I'm gonna grab some water." You tuck your phone in your pocket, heading straight to the water table nearby.
"I was looking for you, cute stuff!" Hae-jin throws his arm around you and you can smell the alcohol lingering on his breath. "Wanna dance?"
"No, I'm good, Hae-jin." You shrug him off and take another sip of water before tossing your cup. San is already on high alert from where he's standingâ his attention nowhere on Namjoon, Jongho or Zara right now even though he's trying his hardest to keep it together.
The fuck was this guy doing?
"What, why? It's just for fun? Let's just go and hang out." He throws his arm around you again, this time bringing you flush to his body. You try to press off his chest, but he's strong and it isn't an easy fight.
"Hae-jin, stopâ"
"What's wrong?" Luckily, Eunchae is already on her way over to save you, sensing your distress signal from afar.
"Hey, stop." Eunchae senses the way you stiffen and quickly become uncomfortable. "Leave her alone." Eunchae pushes Hae-jin back roughly. "You're drunk, dude. She said no."
"Aw come on, bestie trying to get in the way? I just thought we could have a dance. We were connecting, Y/N. Were we not?"
"Hae-jin, stopâNo." His hand comes to your waist again. But, before Eunchae can even jump in, another familiar voice does:
"She said no." San steps in the middle, hand lightly pressed against his chest to create some distance. "Sure you understand what that means, right?" San's tone is laced with anger, but he's wearing a cocky smirk to cover it up. He's fuming and you know it.
"Professor Choi." You quietly say behind him with Eunchae still next to you, but he doesn't respond to it.
"San." Christopher is trying to hold him back by the shoulder, doing his best to reel him back in. "What's going on?"
"I'm sorry, I can't hear you. You do understand what no means, right?" San asks again, his voice louder as he shrugs off Chris.
"Wow, relax. I didn't think I was coming off that disrespectful. She seemed interested so I was only playing her gameâ" San steps forward and your heart drops to your ass because what the fuck does he think he's doing right now?
"Kinda looked like you were forcing yourself on her, though." San cocks his head to the side. "Dunno if that really counts as her being interested."Â
"San. Bring it back." Chris repeats. "The hell do you think you're doing right now?" He mutters lowly.
"San." You help by calling for him again, causing Hae-jin to knit his brows in confusion [along with Eunchae and Chris]. His eyes dart from you, to San, back to you, before responding.
"And how does it make any better that you're getting all worked up over her, Professor? Care to fill us inâ"Hae-jin smirks a bit, causing San to push him back by the chest aggressively. But, before Hae-jin can even react properly, he's interrupted.
"San!" It's not just your voice calling out for him; it's Jongho's, it's Namjoon's, it's Christopher's. Namjoon is quick to step in between, creating distance between Hae-jin and San, giving San a very, very stern look once he dismisses Hae-jin to the side. You faintly hear Namjoon tell him to leave if he still plans to stir trouble, in which his friend tugs him to the side and apologizes on his behalf before they leave the event all together. You watch as Namjoon, Chris and Jongho move San to the opposite end, San's eyes wandering to you as if Namjoon isn't in front of him trying to get to the bottom of things.
"The hell just happened? Are you guys okay?" Felix asks as him and Jiung come over after playing a competitive game of cornhole with another duo of grad students.
"Bro, Hae-jin was getting all handsy and wouldn't take no for answer." Eunchae rolls her eyes, keeping you by her side and brushing your hair back. "Fucking creep. I wish Professor Choi actually decked his ass."
"I saw him getting in the middle." Felix adds.Â
"What's that about?" Jiung looks at you, but you don't really respond. You know he's not asking about Hae-jin. You know he's asking about San in particular.
"He deserved it, that's what. Being a whole dumbass with no boundaries. Learn how to control yourself, asshole!" She yells, hoping Hae-jin hears it even though him and his friends are all further away.
"I'm gonna head to the bathroom."
"Want me to come?" Eunchae asks and you shake your head.
"I'm good. Promise. Just needa break the seal again and take a little breather." Eunchae smiles a bit before squeezing and letting go of your hand.Â
On the other hand, Namjoon and Jongho finally find a better spot to speak with San at. Chris is honestly confused about the whole situation, being that he's never seen San outwardly act out that way even throughout his bad days. Jongho, on the other hand, knows exactly why and he knew it from the moment Hae-jin started drinking more and getting close to you.
Maybe he should've helped calm him down. He knew San's attention was on you and no one else.
"San." Namjoon calls him again to bring his attention back to him. "I know damn wellâ what the hell are you doing putting your hands on a postdoc like that at a campus event?"
"He was getting disrespectful, I know you saw that."
"I did, but you could've handled it with a lot more grace, San. This isn't the time nor place to get worked up like that. You don't get into fights on campus as a professor."
"I'm sorry."
"Was that really all that triggered it? Is there something else going on?" San looks at the floor and shakes his head, jaw ticking as he tries to calm himself down.
"No sir. I shouldn't have reacted that way." Namjoon doesn't believe it one bit, but he won't add more fuel to the fire right now.
"I don't think he'll go crying to the dean so consider yourself lucky. Please don't pull that shit again around these students. Promise me. You've got enough to deal with as is." San sighs heavily and nods.
"You're right, I'm sorry, Joon." Namjoon just gives him a small nod before letting out a breath and walking off to the side.
"Are you okay? I've never seen you that angry." Chris asks, confused about why San reacted the way he did.
"Yeah."Â
"Excuse us." Jongho says as he lightly pushes him by the shoulder, a little irritated at how incredibly stupid he's being. "Bro." He adds when he gets him alone. "What did I tell you?"
"He was putting his hands on her! I wasn't gonna let him disrespect her."
"Because she's your girlfriend?"Â Pause.Â
"That's besides the point, Jongho. He wasn't taking no for an answer and was forcing himself onto her."
"You could've just asked him to leave. He would have listened if you had just approached it properly." San doesn't listen, though. Instead, he clicks his teeth and whips out his phone to text you because he doesn't see you anywhere. "San. Don't." Jongho warns him, trying to keep the peace and the suspicion down. "Can't you just talk to her later? Shit will not help your case if someone sees you two. Think about this."
san:Â baby, where are you?Â
you:Â i'm going to the bathroom.
san:Â can you meet me behind the building, near the first, back west wing door?
you:Â is that a good idea?
san:Â really quickly. please.
you:Â i'll be there in a sec.
"Be right back." He looks at Jongho before walking into the building and out to the back door near the bathrooms.Â
"San." Jongho calls for him again before clicking his teeth. This dude was gonna stress him the fuck out, no doubt.
"Jongho?" Namjoon looks at him and all he can do is shrug.Â
"I really don't know what to tell you." Jongho and Namjoon's eyes travel around to see if everyone is still looking at the scene. "Whatever it is, it isn't my story to tell, Joon."
"Is everything okay?" Zara cuts in, concerned about San. She also witnessed the entire thing go down and unfortunately, it's just another reminder, another confirmation, of your relationship with him. It still aches her heart, even though a tiny part of her is selfishly holding onto hope that they'd work out in the end.
Not you two.
"Yeah, should be." Namjoon gives her a small smile. "Don't worry about it. He's just having an off night." Iseul and Yunho are quietly observing from the opposite end of the courtyard, still mid-discussion with other colleagues. They do try to bring their attention back to the discussion and away from San thankfully; however, Yunho knows Iseul definitely won't let it go at this point.
After you head to the bathroom, you wash your hands and fix your hair a bit, hands slightly shaking from the entire encounter. You take a few deep breaths before heading out towards the back door of the west wing, which is only a few steps away from the bathroom area on the first floor. As soon as you step outside, San is there with his hands in his pockets. He immediately pulls you in for a hug, one that you don't reciprocate, especially because you're on campus. You gently push him back and shake your head, bottom lip slightly poking out in a pout.
"Babyâ"
"Not here." You softly say. There's a small pause before you let out a sigh and address the elephant in the room. "San, you didn't have to do that."
"Well, the hell was I supposed to do? Let him touch you without your consent? He was making you uncomfortable, Y/N. Over my dead fuckin' bodyâ"
"Can't you think for a second? You're on campus!"
"I don't get why you're upset with me for just trying to protect you."
"There were better ways to do it."
"Angel." He says in defeat. "I'm sorry. I'm not gonna sit back and let someone disrespect you like that. Namjoon will be fineâ"
"It's not even that, it's everyone elseâ"
"So be it! For all I fucking care."Â
"San, stop saying that."Â
"No, why? Are you really upset with me?" He cuts in and asks, almost caging you in while he looks at you softly. It's taking everything in you to not just kiss him right here, right now. Wrap your arms around him, tell him to forget every little fucking thing because all that matters is you and him;Â on that us against the world type shitâ
"Y/N?" You turn when you hear the door pop open and another figure is in your peripherals. Jiung is there, confused about the two of you being together.Â
In the back.
San's face, body, in close proximity to yours.
Both of your expressions are telling.
"What're you doing? I thought you were going to the bathroom?" San steps back, attention shifting towards his feet.Â
"I'll talk to you later." Is all he says before brushing past you and Jiung, back to Jongho in the main courtyard.
"Jiung." You come towards him. "You didn't have to come looking for me." You brush past him to head back to the courtyard, and Jiung can't help but keep his eyes on San for a second longer before he's coming after you and grabbing your wrist.
Fuck, San thinks. This whole night is so fucked up. He doesn't even know if you're mad at him or not.
He doesn't know what this means.
"Y/N, don't you think we should talk?"
"About what?"
"Stop." He swings you around to face him. "That's enough. What the hell is going on with you and Professor Choi?"
"Jiungâ"
"I know you haven't been telling the truth, so please stop. Be honest with me, that's all I ask." You sigh shakily, bottom lip trembling as you fiddle with your fingers. Jiung knew, and tonight probably solidified everything he had questioned, felt, assumed. There was no getting away from it, not from Jiung.Â
"We've been seeing each other." His eyes widen in surprise.
"So, Sunwoo wasn't lying when he said he didn't see you during the NAS conference." You feel the tears pricking at your lids as you shake your head. "You were with him." He lets out a breath. "Who else knows?"
"No one else. Please don't mention it to them cause I'm not ready to do that talk with them yet." He doesn't even answer, but the next question throws you so off-guard you don't even know how to properly react.
"D-did Professor Choi force you into this? Is he making you do stuff in order to secure your spot in his lab? Y/N, if he'sâ" You step back and look at him disbelief.
"W-what? That's the first thing you thought of?" Now, it's his turn to look at you in disbelief because how is he supposed to know? He sees the surface level of it and obviously, everything about it is wrong.
"He's a professor, Y/N. Not just any, but yours. Your rotation PI."
"I know it seems wrong, but that's not what it is at all."
"Seems wrong? It is." He flatly says. "This could literally fuck up everything for the both of you. Did you not think about that?"
"I'm not stupid, Jiung. I knew what I was getting into." You back up. "And why would you think of him that way? He'd never do that."
"How am I supposed to know? I know him as a professorâ"
"Well, he would never do that."
"I'm sorry? I'm just worried and am making sure you're okay as your friend."
"I told you it was fine. It's not like that and we both agreed on this."
"Okay?" Jiung retorts, hurt by the defensive tone you have.
"I'm just gonna say bye to everyone and head back."
"I can walkâ"
"It's fine."
"Why are you hella angry with me?" Jiung stops you again. "You can't actually be angry at me for caring about you."
"I don't need you to do that, Jiung. And I don't need you to start assuming all this shit about me and Professor Choi. You don't know him, and you obviously don't know me if you think I'm someone who could be forced around like that."
"That was not even my point, I was justâ"
"Whatever." You say, brushing him off as you walk towards your friends and start gathering your things.
"You're leaving!?" Eunchae pouts. "Fucking Hae-jin and his kill-joy ass!"
"I'm just tired, is all. You stay and have fun, okay?"
"You sure? I can walk youâ"
"Please. I promise. Have fun." You reassure her before saying your goodbyes to the rest of the group and walking off.Â
"Is she okay? Did something happen between her and Professor Choi?" Felix cocks up a brow. "Is there something going on?"
"Nah." Jiung says, plopping down onto a chair. It's easy to see he's defeated, and it's easy to pick up on the mood change. Eunchae and Felix quietly sit around, sipping on the last bits of their drinks before setting the cans aside and scrolling through social media to talk about random thingsâ
Just to let the weirdness pass.
On the other hand, San can see you from where he's standing and he feels his stomach drop. He doesn't wanna see you walk alone, he doesn't wanna be this way with you, he doesn't want Jiung to get upset or make things worse for you.
He doesn't know what to do.
"Maybe we should head out." Jongho chimes in, watching San text away.
"In a sec."
san: y/n, don't walk alone. where are your friends?
you: staying behind.
san: you want me to pick you up?
you: no. i think i should stay home.
san: baby, we need to talk about this.
you: and it won't be tonight. i think we both just need to step back and take a breather, okay? too many things happened and i just need to be in my own space.
san: did you and jiung fight?
you: i'll talk to you later.
san: baby, come on.
Because it's trueâ this was getting sloppier and even though you could care less, you needed to think. Do better. Be better about this with San.
Though, you're scared and you know it's about to unravel quick. Tonight definitely didn't help that case whatsoever.

Jiung has always cared about you since he met you. He's always been good about it, too. Never suffocating you, while at the same time making himself available whenever you needed him. He was there when you cried over your exes and ex-flings that didn't deserve shit, he was there when you just needed to get away from the house.Â
He was there when you were trying to figure out what to do with your lifeâ helping you brainstorm and listening to all your if's, and's, what if's. He was there when you needed someone to hold your hair back when you were too damn drunk. He was there when you felt too high and contemplated life when you took a hit of a blunt at a party.
He was there when you doubted yourself, when you just needed someone to reassure you that you were doing enough.
"Sorry. I got caught up with some stuff in lab." You rush over to the table, plopping your things down with a loud sigh. Jiung had been waiting for you at dinner for close to 30 minutes, his texts and calls going unanswered after a simple 'running late - be there soon' text from earlier. It was most likely a mix of you being busy, along with the crap service in the basement.Â
"All good. You okay?"
"Yeah, I am." You smile at him, a little flustered. You actually were caught up with some project-related things; it was one of those days where things weren't going your way and you were running into every issue you could possibly run into. "Today was just not my day in lab."
"What happened?"
"What didn't happen?" You sigh. "I might ask for your help later with something. I'm not sure I can figure out what's wrong, but you might know some good routes to take." Jiung nods. "But, I don't wanna think about it right now. Need food." You pout.
"Okay, let's get some food in you then." Jiung chuckles. "Why don't you get your food first while I stay with our things?" You nod.
"I'll be back." The NAS conference was coming up soon, but it felt too busy to be excited about the event. Things were ramping up in both labs, and even though a lot of your time had been spent with San, you were busy trying to push your work in the lab in order to help Sunwoo add to his poster presentation. It was a bit of a risk, and you weren't sure the both of you would be able to pull off good, updated results in timeâ but the universe seemed to be on your side despite all the trials and tribulations you had to endure.
While grabbing your food in the dining hall, a call comes through on your phone and it's San. You can't help but smile to yourself, quickly swiping right to answer. You press the phone against your ear while you continue browsing the various options for tonight's dinner, biting your lip when San greets you so sweetly like he always does on the other line.
You had been planning to hang out with Jiung at the apartment after dinner, being in each other's company like before. Catching up on shows. Plans will probably change now.
"Hi baby. Hope your day wasn't too bad. Are you busy tonight?" San asks.
"It was okay. Ran into some issues in lab but nothing that can't be fixed. I'm at dinner with Jiung and we're probably gonna just hang out at the apartment after."
"I'm sorry, love. As long as you're okay?"
"Mhm." You reply in a sing-song tone.Â
"What were you and Jiung gonna do tonight?"
"Hang out and chill. Probably put on one of ours shows we need to catch up on."
"I see. That sounds fun, love."
"Mhm." You repeat. "Why, what about you?"
"Nothing. Just be my old man self at home." You snort.
"You said it, not me."
"Yeah, yeah." He laughs. "I just got done working out and was hoping you'd come over."
"I can."
"Sweetheart." He laughs. "You should enjoy your time with Jiung."
"I can always see him whenever and wherever. I can't necessarily do that with you." You slightly pout. Jiung searches the dining hall to see if there are other familiar faces grabbing dinner right now. His eyes land back on you, brows knitting at the way you're talking on the phone and the little mannerisms he's picking up on.
The way you're preventing your smile from getting too big.
Speaking shyly.
Pacing around the room but not really looking at the dinner options.
You're definitely occupied, and Jiung had been noticing for awhile now. He just wasn't sure what it was, and he didn't wanna ask nor did he wanna assume. He figured you'd tell him eventually, but time seems to be passing and instead of you telling him everything like you normally doâ
He knows nothing and you seem to be more distant than he's used to.
You hang up the phone after nodding a few times, finally approaching the staff to place your order. You grab your container, along with those chocolate chip cookies you love so much before swiping your ID card and heading back to the table.
"Sorry, Jiung. I gotta go after dinner. Gotta fix up this mess in the lab." You plop back down onto the seat.
"I can come with you? We can take a look together."
"It's okay. I'll just text you about it if I can't figure it out."
"Do you want me to come by later instead then?" You shake your head.
"I'll be there for awhile." Jiung cocks a brow up. "I promise it's all good. I'll let you know if anything comes up." Jiung shrugs. "I'm sorry."
"Mm, it's okay. We can always catch up on our shows later on." He gives you a small, reassuring smile; one that masks how sad he feels deep down. How hurt he feels after the umpteenth time of being put on the back burner. He gets up and heads over to grab his food, internally sulking at not being able to spend time with his bestfriend yet again.
Now, he doesn't necessarily feel like he's there. Not like he used to be. And not by his own choosing, noâ
It's because you seem to be distancing yourself more and more each day and he's not sure why.
He's never seen you like this.
Or maybe, he's just not good at navigating this.
Luckily though, he's a bit sidetracked when he returns to the tableâ eating a rice bowl that he ordered just to order. You update him about things in lab, and the both of you are able to share a good conversation about how things are going, stories about your friends. You laugh and crack jokes with him in your usual fashion. He teases and pokes fun in his usual fashion.
It feels like the old days.
And it makes it hard for him because he sees the same person he's cared for, loved, after all these years.
Yet, there's something about you that's different and he can't necessarily pinpoint it.
He can only hope you're okay, and that you're happy. Doing the right thing. Taking care of yourself properly.
When the end of dinner comes, he still doesn't know what about you is different or who is making you different. He's left standing there, watching as you speed off to the Choi Lab; dealing with the awful, lonely feeling that punches him in the gut every time you part ways without saying much lately.
You don't feel like you're there anymore, and it's unfortunate.
My heart breaks for Jiung like it doesn't hurt to spend a few hours more with your bestfriend but then if my boyfriend is San I might drop the world for him too akakskdhsjsj
Ooohhhh fight ok cos I know for a fucking fact San can fight and he's probably one who takes his sweet time to cool down when her woman is disrespected.
