Dango, shaved ice, and/or cupcake?
đĄDANGOâWhat is a piece of media you forgot about but rediscovered recently? Do you see similarities to it that show up in any of your projects/work?
A clip popped up about Samurai Jack and it made me watch a few more clips and reminisce. Samurai Jack was such an interesting show because you have the main story of Jack fighting his way to get back, and then you have moments where he just...chills! Relaxes. He's not so hard focused on his mission that he refuses to talk to anyone or pushes them away, but you see him make temporary or everlasting bonds and doing side quests to help people just because he's a good person. I think this influened why I like the quiet moments in between epic battles so much. When characters have time to breathe and remember that they are human with natural wants and desires. This gif captures the entire vibe I like to go for.
đ§SHAVED ICEâWhen creating something, do you keep more consideration of the audience or or your personal taste? Where is the line between self indulgence and self control?
It's a mixture of both, but currently I cater more to my personal tastes. At one point I did try to think more about the audience and would trap myself into writing choices that weren't really what I wanted to do. But after a while, I just said screw it and wrote what I what made me happy first and foremost.
You have to allow yourself some self indulgences or you're not going to have fun. And I think the line between that and self control is to at least by consistent with your characters/story, and to be respectful when using someone else's characters/story. It's a balancing act.
đ§CUPCAKEâWhat is one of your favorite projects/work and why? Would you redo any parts of it or keep it as is?
This art commission I did for @qonsolequeen is one of my favorites because look at Envie! I think she looks phenomenal and I gave her the most amazing boobs. That's the best bust I have ever drawn, hands down. I'm not joking when I say I always come back to this pic and admire the way I drew her whole torso and Envie in general.
I would for sure change Dai Tai's dress though. It just seems too plain and the colors blend together too much. đ¤
Thanks for asking!
Flan đŽ Dango đĄ and cupcake đ§!
đŽFLANâWhat is a recent piece of media that you would like to reference or replicate in your projects/work? What did you learn from it?
Recently I've been really obsessed with Yuto Sano's art style! The way he draws his Gokurakugai characters, clothes and expressions, and his use of color is so lively and dynamic. So much personality in the posing and the little details like accesories. I'm aiming for that this year!
đĄDANGOâWhat is a piece of media you forgot about but rediscovered recently? Do you see similarities to it that show up in any of your projects/work?
I was looking through my oldest digital art and I found my old Monster High OCs! It's literally been 17 years since then, WOAH. They were the first drawings I ever posted online (on deviantART) and I remember feeling so underskilled compared to all the other artists on dA at the time. I told myself that if I ever got better at art I would redraw them someday.
So I did. đ Been working on this for the past few days so it's not done yet, but I like what I have so far. It feels good to treat myself to some nostalgia like this. A similarity that shows up is that I somehow always end up putting a water/ocean themed girl somewhere in my works (like Edith right now).
đ§CUPCAKEâWhat is one of your favorite projects/work and why? Would you redo any parts of it or keep it as is?
I still really love this art piece! Having to figure out their heights, making them look similar enough to be siblings, and picking colors and outfits was a real challenge. There's some art that I consider just art but this is an illustration. Everything looks great if you only focus on the waist up lol.
But my biggest pet peeve is the SHOES. What are those?! Cindy's looks fine but the boys' shoes??? I hate drawing feet/shoes and it shows! đ¤ Bruce's hand on the cup too. That was just me being lazy after paintstakingly drawing not one but both of Cindy's hands.
Thanks for asking!
Flan, Cookie, and Donut! đŽđŞđŠđ
đŽFLANâWhat is a recent piece of media that you would like to reference or replicate in your projects/work? What did you learn from it?
So I follow this YouTuber and she just posted a video on What "Avoiding Stereotypes" Really Means. I'm glad that I watched it because I always subconciously worry about such things with my POC characters, but I think(?) I do a good job of making everyone's personalities diverse and with good reasoning for why they act the way they do! There's always room for improvement though.
đŞCOOKIEâWhat is a mistake you made in your work that you wish you could have fixed at the time? Do you still want to fix it or will you leave it as is?
This is gonna sound ridiculous but I got the color of plum flowers wrong, and they're a reccuring motif with Dai Tai. They're supposed pink, not purple, and it's gonna haunt me forever because all I had to do was look at a reference picture! đ
I'm not gonna fix it though. Gotta accept my little mistakes...
đŠDONUTâTell us about your process when creating something. Do you start with character or story? Do you write an outline or do you make it up as you go? Do you research extensively or try to be more original?
For my long stories, I always start with a character and ask myself: what is a big change that could happen in their life? What is a problem that they are trying to avoid but eventually have to face?
Then, I start with an outline! Here is the PDF outline for Smells Like Teen Spirit since it's the most detailed out all of the ones I've written. On a single document I write down all of my idea with notes, images, screenshotted questions and answers, song lyrics, chapter title ideas, dialouge, and everything possible.
I'll also include tons of links to videos and articles and whatever other research or references that I need. It's all one big collage in one place so that I don't have to have too many tabs open.
Not everything in the outline gets used, but some of the ideas may pop up in other stories. Outlining is helpful to me because I'm obsessed with things being organized. But it's also okay to stray from the plan if I write something completely different.
Thanks for asking!
Sundae, Ice Cream, and Pie!
đ¨SUNDAEâWhat is something that you always try to include in your projects/work? What is something that you always try to avoid?
I like to have casts that have both teens and adults influencing the story. I understand why most narratives prefer to have one age group so that they can have a matching/intended audience, but I personally enjoy casts where the ages are blended. It widens the scope of the stories you want to tell and gives you a lot of room for multiple themes.
Relating to this, something I try to avoid is making the adult characters self righteous over the younger characters. Adults make mistakes and should be held accountable for it. Sometimes younger people are right and they should be allowed to say so.
đŚICE CREAMâWhat is a realization you had about yourself when creating a specific project or work? Do you view it as something to continue or something that you should change?
...I always write about the beach or the ocean. EVERY. TIME. It didn't dawn on me until I realized that a lot of characters/stories/settings that I write have an aquatic theme in their somewhere. So much so that I constantly have to rewite a lot of things so that it doesn't become repetitive. It's definitely something I'm trying to change lol.
(I grew up with access to the ocean less than an hour away from my house so that's 100% the reason behind all this.)
đĽ§PIEâAre any of your projects/works influenced by people you know in real life? Or situations that you encountered in real life?
Son of the West got a lot of infleunce from my role as the eldest of all my siblings. Bruce ended up getting a lot of my bad habitsâhaving to act as another parent, making decisions for your siblings, being envious of the freedom they have, misdirected aggression, sacrificing yourself so that no one gets hurt even if it hurts you in the process, supressing your emotions so that you don't feel like a burden, etc.
But he also got my good habits tooâdefending your family tooth and nail, learning more about yourself when isolated from them, calling out the adults who hurt you, finding support from people unrelated to you, having hope despite your trauma, learning from your mistakes and making better choices, prioritizing yourself, etc.
It's not a one to one comparison and it wasn't planned, but Bruce's story for sure has the most echoes of me within it. I think that's why he's one of my favorite characters that I've made. đ

Posting an excerpt for "Pearline and the Magical Garden," a black fantasy story I'm still developing! It's all subjected to change, and I want to make this rare, but thought it'd be nice enough to share:
Pearline kept a firm grip on the railing and walked down the manorâs elm staircase. A smokey smell wafted in the air. It got stronger with every step she took, stinging her eyes. From it, she assumed her aunt was trying to cookâŚagain.
It wasnât that Rosetta was a bad cook, per say. At least, Pearline would never say it so rudely. Sheâd say her auntieâs cooking wasâŚa work in progress.Â
"K-N-I-G-H-T! Knights lead you to victory!"
I survived another Mother's Day (even though my hands look like they've been in a knife fight). Sketch of Mara in her cheer uniform! đŁ
Mara's cheerleading choreography is the stuff of legends. Even the opposing teams and their cheer squads look forward to it, so much so that her work is recognized even outside the school district. If only her parents would get off their phones and watch it for once...
