MYP - Portraiture Study
Results from Questionnaire
I carried out a 5 question survey on Emotion and Portraiture, and got some good responses - all of which gave me a good insight into how people view Portraiture.
Here are the multiple choice answers - It shows that a the majority of people think that portraiture is emotive, and everyone thinks that it is one of the most powerful types of photography

Laura Pannack - Emotive Portrait Selection
Laura Pannack is an editorial photographer whom I have spoken about before on this blog. She is also an inspirational photographer and one that does include a lot of emotion in her photos.
These images are from the 'The Untitled', in which a series of teenagers had their portraits taken - The theme being that nobody knows whether the teenagers in the pictures are young offenders, suffering from learning difficulties etc. The images are based on the pure emotion that you read from the models face.

Annie Leibovitz - Portrait Selection
Annie Leibovitz is a photographer whom I admire, and these two portraits I particularly liked from her selection of photos. I especially like the Angelina Jolie one - there is a whole lot of emotion captured in the image.

Audrey Hepburn - Cecil Beaton
Another set of portraits by Cecil Beaton, this time of Audrey Hepburn. Beaton does seem to capture the innocence and angelic features of both Monroe and Hepburn, and the images are flattering as well as natural.
It is refreshing to see that these photos, rather than being heavily prop focused and make up focused, are a lot more natural and relaxed. It shows both women quite relaxed and also happy - rather than posed.

Dorothea Lange
Documentary photographer and photojournalist, Dorothea Lange is most known for her Depression-era work. Her most known photo, Migrant Mother, is an emotive piece of portraiture.
These two photos of the Migrant Mother are not only moving, they also embody the whole feel of the Depression-era in one single photo. The second one is again from the same series. The photos are shot as they are, and it is a raw and truthful insight into how the Great Depression affected everybody from adults to children.

Out Of Focus Photography - Saatchi Gallery
I had a look at the Out Of Focus Photography book yesterday and was interested by the selection of emotional photographs within it. Here is a small selection that I took photos of.
I was particularly drawn to the photo of the child and of the Marylin Monroe impersonator. Both portray obvious signs of emotion, particularly in the Monroe photo. The childs photo portrays a sense of lost innocence, and the child himself looks lost. The same could be said with Monroe - There is a sense of loss also, and a face of upset and hurt.

Andy Gotts - Celebrity Portraits
What is interesting about Andy Gotts is his ability to connect with his subjects. Many of the works I have looked at of his, he has a story to tell in regards to how he got the shot, or how he made the shot different to the norm.
Helena Bonham Carter
Robert de Niro
Scarlett Johansson
These are some of my favourite portraiture works of Gotts'. I particularly like the shot of Helena Bonham Carter - it shows her at a relaxed and 'normal' state, removing the celebrity status from her persona.

2014 Vanity Fair Hollywood Portfolio
This year, Vanity Fair had a section of portraits photographed by Chuck Close. The bold images star big names, such as Oprah Winfrey and Brad Pitt, without makeup.
The portraits strips down the mask that celebrities tend to wear, especially when on camera, and captures them in their raw elements.
Term 2 - Research Question
In Term 2, I will be able to focus my research on one particular field of photography. I will also have to answer a specific question based around this field.
I have decided to focus on the field of Portraiture, as I feel that it is something I would like to work with in the future.
The question I have made to answer for this term is: "Why is portraiture so emotive?"
I feel that this is a good question and I could get a lot of research focusing on this.
