My dad told me something once when I called him and I was really upset. I just wasn’t feeling like a good person — I felt like a failure and maybe I wasn’t talented and all these things. He just listened to me vent for about 30 minutes, and he goes, Well, cheer up, you’re worse than you think. I just laughed and it completely broke me out of this spell of self-deprecation, self-loathing, and pity. I can’t really tell you why it was so profound to me, but it really helped me. As bad as I think I am, I’m actually way worse.
