"A Smoke Break"
I have changed places, and he has changed places, but this moment between us is still happening. This moment between strangers is bouncing around the universe right now, like Godβs laughter. He and I had more in common than old friends as a bird commanded our gazes from the creek. One thousand shades of blue and grey wove a pattern over its feathers. Its expression, seemingly aware of admirers, returned our gazes. We humans held our breath. Its wings spread wide, wider than anything, and flapped the bird away, water droplets sparkling back into the current, no sounds but the flapping made on a morning turned silent, no sounds of breathing because neither of us breathed. Our eyes chased the creature as it left us too soon, shades of blue and grey still left to appreciate. But it was gone, us adult children marveling still. The man and I looked at each other, andβthough I thought it had already stoppedβthe earth stopped further as I saw God in the wonder on his face. This older gentleman, who also had grey to appreciate, just stepping out for a smoke and me for a walk, could never have known this moment would bounce around the little universe inside me forever, like the laughter of God.
