ITC patent attorney Matthew Baton joins Allen & Overy as senior counsel in D.C.
(July 14, 2014) Allen & Overy announced today that Matthew Baton has joined the firm's global intellectual property practice as a Senior Counsel in the Washington, D.C. office.Â
Matthew is an intellectual property lawyer specializing in litigating Section 337 investigations before the United States International Trade Commission (“ITC”).Â
He joins Allen & Overy from the ITC, where he served as a senior investigative attorney in the ITC’s Office of Unfair Import Investigations, where he represented the federal government in investigations regarding electrical, computer, and mechanical patents in various technologies, including video game systems, digital televisions, Blu-ray video, digital image capture and transmission, semiconductor lasers and laser drivers, and graphics processing. During his tenure at the ITC, Matthew served as lead government counsel in three trials and numerous claim construction hearings.Â
Prior to his work with the ITC, Matthew practiced as a patent litigator, where he was involved in cases involving a wide range of technologies including computer architecture, computer graphics, communications protocols, telecommunications technology, software design, and digital video compression before various district courts and the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. Matthew is also experienced in evaluating and providing opinions on patent issues such as infringement, validity, and enforceability. A registered patent attorney, Matthew has assisted clients with applying for and obtaining patents from the United States Patent and Trademark Office and has prepared petitions for patent reexamination.

(july 14, 2014) Munger, Tolles & Olson has elected Susan E. Nash to rejoin its partnership, effective immediately.
Ms. Nash is a veteran advocate who first joined Munger Tolles in 1985, was elected to the partnership and then took a break from law firm practice to raise her children.
Since returning to the firm as of counsel, Ms. Nash has played a key role on trial teams. Her recent matters
include representing Transocean, the world’s largest drilling company, through the first two trials in the multidistrict litigation in U.S. District Court in New Orleans arising from the April 20, 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Earlier this year, she represented a French company in a civil jury trial arising out of its purchase of assets of a French medical device business.
“Susan plays a critical role in every case she handles, from shaping the big-picture legal strategy, to crafting the winning motions, to questioning witnesses at trial,” Brad D. Brian, senior litigation partner, said. “I am delighted to welcome her back to our partnership.”
Ms. Nash first joined the partnership in 1988. In 1990, she left the firm to work reduced-hours while raising her two sons. During that time, she served as court-appointed appellate counsel to numerous indigent defendants, argued more than 30 cases in the California Court of Appeal and secured multiple reversals and sentence reductions. Ms. Nash was on the appellate team that secured habeas relief as described in the movie “Mario’s Story.” She also taught appellate advocacy at UCLA and Loyola Law Schools. After being away from the firm for nearly two decades, Ms. Nash returned to Munger Tolles as of counsel.

(July 14, 2014) – Foley & Lardner LLP announced today that Chris Laukenmann has joined the firm’s Finance & Financial Institutions, Transactional & Securities, and Private Equity & Venture Capital Practices as a partner in the Los Angeles office. For more than two decades, Laukenmann has advised Fortune 500, middle market and emerging growth companies on capital, investment, structure, governance, corporate strategy, treasury, risk management, reorganization and regulatory matters. His practice focuses on mergers and acquisitions, securities, finance, private equity, venture capital, general corporate, restructuring and regulatory compliance across industries. Laukenmann joins Foley from Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP.Â
Earlier in his career, Laukenmann was assistant general counsel for Transamerica and its merger partner Aegon, where he was responsible for the company’s asset management division, including structured and financial derivative product development, financial institution regulation and day-to-day operational legal issues. Previously, Laukenmann served as vice president/legal of Great Western Bank and its successors, culminating in the WaMu banking consolidation, where he oversaw a broad range of banking, finance, real estate, brokerage, insurance, deposit and mortgage based transactional, regulatory, and risk management/compliance matters.Â

Al-Louzi’s practice focuses primarily on equity capital markets in Saudi Arabia and other markets in the Middle East and on cross-border mergers and acquisitions. Al-Louzi will be a member of the firm’s Riyadh and Dubai offices.
With over 17 years of experience in the Middle East, Al-Louzi has earned a reputation as one of the leading capital markets practitioners in Saudi Arabia and elsewhere in the region. He has also advised on a number of high profile mergers and acquisitions and privatization matters in Saudi Arabia, Jordan and the UAE.
Al-Louzi represents a number of global and Middle East banks, investment banks, regional private equity firms and leading Saudi Arabian family businesses with extensive business interests. He has deep knowledge of the financial services, securities infrastructure, healthcare and telecommunications sectors in the Middle East, particularly in Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

 Antoine joins as a tax partner from UGGC Avocats. He specialises in corporate tax, the tax aspects of mergers and acquisitions, international tax structuring and transfer pricing, tax litigation, private asset management, employee benefits, the creation of investment funds and VAT.
 Antoine has built a strong client following, having practised at UGGC since being admitted to the Paris Bar in 1996. He acts for French private equity funds, French and international corporates and private individuals.
