SECâs standard issue pistol is the P-223, a very durable gun chambered for .45 caliber rounds. Military variants are modified with magnetic coils to increase velocity and energy output, but are heavily-restricted outside SEC and CMS forces. Aster has one, but donât tell anyone that.

Admiral James V. Mackay has been with SEC for thirty-eight years. He holds command over the Voyager group, a division composed of the only five ships Humanity has left that are capable of interstellar travel.
He is personally responsible for the operation that brought down the sixth ship twenty years ago, when he fought in the Sheng-Ouranos campaign, a relatively short war between two rival colonies.Â

13-14 The Colonial Militia Service, or CMS, are the planet-based military divisions that serve on smaller SEC-controlled worlds. Often heavily subsidized by SEC, the CMS are tasked with maintaining the peace and level of security on colonies that canât afford their own armed forces. Ironically, while CMSs were created so that citizens could defend their homes, recent developments have pushed SEC to raise more and more levies from CMSs. In Vigdis and Ceresâ homeworld of Sierra, for example, roughly two out of every five Militiamen are conscripted into service for SEC.Â

The Multiple-Use Lab Uniform, or MLU are standard fatigues worn by personnel of the Space Expedition Commission (SEC). MLUs were generally designed for combat, but were eventually phased out, but retained in service as work uniforms. MLUs are flame-retardant,cut-resistant, non-conductors, and are thermoflexible, meaning they can cool personnel in hot temperatures, and warm personnel in frigid conditions. They are not, however, particularly known for being comfortable. They come in a wide variety of colors, like white, blue, and red, and their colors denote the personnelâs role and position. Trainees and students often wear light-blue MLUs, except Ranger Cadets, who wear dark-blue MLUs.Â

Weâre finally past the prologue!

Page 4 and 5 There is a print on the wall of the Overseerâs office of a lone tree standing in a field next to the remains of a burned down barn. The painting is named âThe Ash Tree,â and if youâve ever hung out with the anti-war hippies in their bookstores, clubs, or coffee shops, you may have seen other reprints or variations of the painting. Itâs a potent symbol for the Whiters, so youâd wonder, whatâs a big olâtough guy like the Overseer doing with a print like that? Well, he doesnât like to talk much about his tour in Sheng, but if rumors are to be believed, he served with the artist who made that painting. The convoy they were in was attacked by Sheng columnists. The air artillery came to the rescue and scattered the guerillas, but they fled back into the grasslands to lose them. The bushwheat grows eight feet tall and fucks up their visuals, so the air guys left the Overseerâs team to look for them.
They tracked them to this farm. The farmer swore that he didnât see any columnists, but you know, where else would they go? Ass end of nowhere, with no other place to hide for miles, the barn was definitely their hideout. The soldiers pushed the man aside and forced his family onto the floor. The artist kept his eye on them while the other guys checked the barn. They couldnât open the door, and no one responded. The farmerâs key didnât work either, so they assumed that the door was barricaded. Â The overseerâs guys lined up around the barn and opened fire, just blasting away at the side of the barn and filling it with lead. Then the Overseerâs CO took a grenade and through it in while shouting bloody murder and suddenly it just went boom.Â
Investigation said that the columnists werenât there, but the farmer was part of a smuggling ring. They stockpiled  in his barn and shipped illegal biofuels that they made from bushwheat and distilled to some really potent drugs. The entire barn lit up like crazy and knocked everyone over. The house, which was just a few yards away, collapsed. When they dug him out, the artist was pinned to the ground by a wooden beam, his back shattered. Could never walk again, they said. The overseer would never see the artist again, but years later, as a civvie,he saw the painting in an art gallery while on his way to work. He recognized the name under the painting, but even worse, he recognized the story it told. Guy cried right there, on the street, in front of the store window. I donât know when he bought the print, but I heard that he avoided that route for weeks until the painting was finally bought. Itâd be months before he finally got past the nightmares, and years before he loosened on the triggers. He bought a print online as his way of putting the past to rest, and kept it in his office ever since. If youâre ever in his office, you should take a good look at the print. Youâll notice that on the frame, he added his own plate on it and gave the painting another name. He named it âHome.âÂ
