“The library is not just an information center. It’s always been a refuge for anyone to come to, whatever status in society. For people, intellectuals, pseudo-intellectuals, for lonely people. For every walk of life.”
—From Meanwhile in San Francisco by Wendy MacNaughton
The 11-branch Douglas County Library System (DCLS), OR, is facing closure later this spring after a ballot measure to create an independent tax district was defeated in the November 2016 election. Money provided by the tax district would have generated about $4 million a year; enough to meet the library’s funding needs. Since its rejection, DCLS is actively searching for alternatives to closure.
We should have more libraries, they offer value in far greater ways
Dr. Carla Hayden, the first woman and the first person of color to hold the post, is a quiet but fierce defender of creative freedom.
How does one become Dr. Carla? One does one befriend Dr. Carla? These are questions I ask myself regularly.
“Hayden told me that she wants the Library of Congress “to get to the point where there’ll still be a specialness, but I don’t want it to be an exclusiveness. It should feel very special because it is very special. But it should be very familiar.” “
It’s okay to lose yourself for a little while. In books, in music, in art. Let yourself get lost.

“Cats are connoisseurs of comfort.” ~ James Herriot .. My bf’s cat only ventured a few steps into the snowy wonderland in the garden, then quickly returned to brush against my book and legs. It doesn’t matter how many books you can read in short time, what matters is that you read and you love it.
The Twitter Rebellion
I’ve seen quite a few posts recently about dystopian novels not predicting the rebellion of the national parks (now joined by many other science affiliated government agencies) twitter rebellion, which are funny and a bit hopeful. The thing is though, maybe it should have been predicted. Generally when you decide to work for a government agency like the National Parks, NASA, or the EPA it is not the sweet pay that attracts you to the job (because it doesn’t exist - even if you are higher up, generally you could be making way more money in the private sector), but the fact that you are working towards a mission that resonates with you. I mean, that’s a big part of why I went back to library school to become a librarian. It’s a sense of purpose for the job you’re doing. So of course the ones who have chosen to work for these agencies are also going to be the first to say, “I don’t think so,” when what they believe in is threatened.
Outlook Blog: Educational Technology 2 by Wani Alina.
ET2 also known as Educational Technology is a subject taken by Education students (by me). It is about the systematic method and applying technology to teaching aide. Educational Technology 2 has its objective like the other curricular subjects. I will enumerate the objectives of EdTech 2 (given by our professor)
- EdTech2 is concern with Integrating Technology into teaching-and-learning.
- EdTech2 is focused introducing, reinforcing, supplementing, ang extending the knowledge and skills to learners so that they can become exemplary users of Educational Technology
- EdTech2 involve a deeper understanding of the computer as well as hands on application of computer skills.
- EdTech2 aims to infuse technology in the student teachers training, helping them to adapt and meet rapid and continuing technological changes, particularly in the thriving global Information and Communucation Technology (ICT) environment.
Impressive objective aye? I think it will help the educational system to be improved by of course with the guidance of our teachers. Teacher need to guide their students to the use of technology. Systematic Instructional Planning Process should be applied to know how effective is the learning outcomes of the students. I learned a lot from Educational Technology 2. Involving the teaching strategies by motivational activities for the students. Constructivism is also stressed in Edtech2, it will help the students to be a emergent and effective learner.
Technology can be now a instructional teaching aide. It can lessen the consume of time and effort but teachers should be more meticulous of what topic they will choose. Software materials should be applicable by the given topic. It will affect the performance of the student if the teacher use too much of instructional technology materials. The student could be tardy, lousy and they could lose interest to learn. I hope in the near future, technology is responsibly applicable to educational system.

Book Sculptures by Allison Glasgow
I am a life-long bookseller and avid reader. I began making these book sculptures when struggling to come up with a gift for my boss, celebrating the ten year anniversary of her bookstore. There was no book I could give her that she hadn’t already discerned, so I decided to take a favorite book of poems and reconfigure it into a tree. Dismantling a book is not done without consciousness. Books are precious items. All the books used in my art have been loved and read, and are chosen because of their particular worth. Taking apart text, line by line, I like to think I am reading these books in a different way. Words take on different meanings when isolated or spun into a physical form. These art pieces are an attempt to read words as objects.
