Detail from a Lion Hunt, picture taken at the British Museum a couple of years ago. My dad @jalalwandavi and I always get overwhelmed by emotions when we see this wall, this picture only shows a detail of the lions hunting scene . King Ashurnasirpal is here depicted finishing off one of the 450 lions that he claims to have killed. Killing lions was a royal sport in Assyria, symbolising the king’s role as protector of civilisation against savagery . There used to be lions living throughout Europe and they officially became extinct in the year 100 AD . . . . . #extinction #lionshunt #assyrian #nimrud #kingashurnasirpal #britishmuseumlondon #basrelief #lionsextinction #middleeast (at British Museum) https://www.instagram.com/p/CPIzw4Cl-UV/?utm_medium=tumblr
