This is an Archive for all my Bartholomew Posts I am transferring from Twitter/X to Tumblr. There won’t be much going on here otherwise. This Account will only be used to have another place where I can keep them as backup!

Back then when it released I read the Fan-Translations online and at times, when I couldn’t wait, would use Google Translate to get an idea what it already is about and read the proper human translation afterwards.

Lets starts first in the Mall.

First off we have the Mall. I really like this part in general: We see here that Bartholomew never lost his roots. Bartholomew was born into a farmer family in a small village in Wales. Bartholomew planned at very young age to go out to the sea and make his money there as it was more profitable. To this time many young men wanted to try their luck on the sea but this was also a weakspot as many fell victims to people hiring them under wrong promises or straight up tricking them under influence (when drunk). So there is a possibility the reason why Bartholomew ended up working on a slave ship. Slave ships, despite of the gruesome nature they are, also were an awful place for the workers and they lived from standing hours if not days on the Harbour with one of their slaves in hopes to sell one. This doesn’t seem to be something Bartholomew aspired to be so there is a high chance he also was a victim to a trickery.

But as we later learn in OC3, not a big spoiler but still: Bartholomew even as a captain, worried most of the time how to feed his crew. And even in historical records, while they sure had their luxurious goods, they lived from Bartholomew being clever not only on strategy but also in resources. So even as a wealthy pirate, he always counted the coins. The dialogue is great because it shows Bartholomews humble background and also his skill as a captain who takes care of many men.

Then we have Bartholomews big Moment. Back when this dropped in JP many people were so excited about it and it was the first time Bartholomew got lots of attention outside of his Mekakure Gimmick.

Bartholomews Organisation Skills were highlighted here, showing once again what a skilled Captain he was who keeps a cool head and always is looking out for others and his surroundings. A trait we will see a lot in Ordeal Call 3.

Kazuradrop then comes and gives him his sticker. What is sticking here out is her mentioning „I am sure it isn’t easy trying to keep up the cheerful facade all the time“ while Bartholomew responsible with „As if I wasn’t already painfully aware of that“ - You can guess it. Like the other Pirates, him being a silly Gentleman Otaku Pirate is an act he puts off most of the time. Later we see him making good use of it to (spoiler) cheer Master and Mash up and keep their spirits up.

Lets remember Bartholomews biggest Wish he mentions in Atlantis: He wants to give People hope. Bartholomew, rather than having an unhinged image that makes you underestimate him, goes with a cheerful facade. So his act is less targeted towards his enemy, tho they sure can underestimate him based on it, but on his comrades and to cheer them up. Something his Skillset is also reflecting as a small semi support. A lot of deep dive will later happen in OC3 so I keep it short for now. But what’s important is that you have to keep in mind that Bartholomew likes his secrecy and while he isn’t straight up lying to you, he also doesn’t reveal himself to everyone easily.

Now the next part. My only small nitpick with the Event writing.

Bartholomew was a known non-alcoholic Pirate who preferred tea. While there were mentions of him not minding sharing a bottle with prisoner or guests it was rather out of hospitality and necessity of the moment rather than taking pleasure in it. We later, in OC3, get a really perfect lore deep dive into Bartholomew and his personality so I find this quite the shame. Of course you can say „it’s just to lift up the spirits“/„match the pirate facade/vibe“ but honestly I think Nasu just forgot or overlooked this part lol.

It’s not a big deal in the end and just something small that bothered me a tiny bit because his writing could have been flawless to the bit. But like I said, just a personal nitpick. I find him being so anti alcohol actually an interesting trait, especially because it’s not just him not drinking but also him preferring Tea, which was such a character trait to the historical Bartholomew that when his crew robbed a ship they looked for the porcelain cups and plates and gifted it to Bartholomew, also showing the bond between him and his crew.

Now we come to my favorite Part…

I was looking forward to this Section a lot! I love refined Gentleman Bartholomew and I also love silly Otaku Bartholomew but god I do love Pirate Captain Bartholomew so much as well and it’s sadly so rare we get to see this side of him, so every time we get to see his more cruel and cold side I am clapping like a seal (oh people you going to have a good time in Ordeal Call 3 with that, I give this away as a little appetizer).

Bartholomew rarely was cruel or over brutal and only used violence as his last resort but when he did he was good at doing it. Him being good at the things he does is also very lore point. Because Captain Davis saw all the potential in Bartholomew when he captured their slave ship first. Bartholomew never wanted to be Pirate but Captain Davis basically didn’t gave him a chance. He wanted him because he knew he will be great at it and oh he was right. And it’s also the reason why he was instantly voted as the new captain by the Crew.

And finally the last part. If you know his MyRoom Lines he already mentioned the importance of working together. And here once again is also the mention of the importance of „keeping up appearances“. I think the fact it was shoved in a section before the Ordeal Call starts shows it’s meant as a little foreshadow and hint based on the other points I mentioned. That said, I hope you all look forward to his witting in Ordeal Call 3!

The official English Translation was really good and I thought at times it was even smoother and a better read than the fan translation. So if you read it there is no butcher to the writing and you can enjoy it freely. Excited if things stay the same in the Ordeal Call!

On another Note, when it comes to his Highlight Spot, we got this sweet treat. The Animation Board Art was posted by @hayama02101 on Twitter, I will post the Link to the tweet under it.

The Fate/Grand Order Interlude Manga released! And on Twitter Mata mentioned that there are a few changes between the Manga Version of Bartholomews Interlude and the Version that is in the TYPE-MOON ACE Volume 15! I did my best to look for all the References. Granted, I probably looked over some, but here are the most notable ones I noticed!

It’s amazing how those Changes improve the Manga even more! It was a lot of fun trying to spot the differences. Also Mata included a little 4-Panel Bonus Comic! They mentioned there (if the Translator is correct) that Bartholomew is their favourite Character. Which is amazing to read, all his Drawings really carry so much care it’s always amazing to see!

The Commentaries are the most interesting Part. However, like with the Material Books, not every Artist provides the same amount of Detail.

Bartholomew really seems to be into sports. In several CE's we saw him during sporty activities or outdoor activities! The Pirate keeps enjoying to travel around the world while keeping himself in shape!

It’s a bit unusual that I come here and post something about my Dream-related relationship to Bartholomew but in this case I think we can make an excision since firstly it’s my birthday and secondly I think it’s just Bartholomew wishing me/my Alter Ego Happy Birthday so nothing big happening here.
