Conservative politicians live on socialism.
Capitalism needs socialism.
Military lives on socialism.
My pet conspiracy theory:
The United States government encourages military recruitment by promising socialist benefits: healthcare, education, housing, cheaper groceries, and childcare. They then deliberately do all of these things so poorly that our entire military has an informed prejudice against taxpayer-funded, government-administrated benefits. They wouldn't dream of inflicting this shit on civilians.
It works very well as a conspiracy, because only a few active nudges in the 60's and 70's would have been required before the system actively perpetuated itself and looked like the system functioning normally instead of deliberate choices to give our military poor service (giving more money to the elites who own the military-industrial complex, by paying for Spam for the service members and using the rest to buy Waygu for themselves). It benefits the elite on the economic AND the culture war fronts, while indoctrinating the military against the most basic leftist arguments.
I mentioned this to my father, a retired full-bird colonel who had been in Intelligence during the Cold War. He is fanatically anti-socialist, and started to deny the possibility, then looked really thoughtful and said it was actually quite plausible and he wouldn't be surprised. Not that he changed his mind politically at all, but that was the biggest crack I ever saw.
