i think one of the reasons Stratt comes across as colder in the book than in the movie is because the book is way more from Grace's perspective. we get what he felt and he saw in her when she betrayed him, which is obviously going to be tinted by... the betrayal. he sees her as someone unaffected by this because it doesn't matter if she's affected by this, it only matters that she is killing him.

But looking closely, we can see how much this is affecting her.

She clenched her fist and looked to the side for a moment. Then back to me with a burning gaze I'd never seen before. "Dr. Grace. You're a coward and you're full of shit." [...] She rubbed her eyes. "Believe it or not, Dr. Grace, I kind of like you. I don't respect you very much, but I do think you're a fundamentally good man." [...] She looked pained. "I don't like this any more than you do, Dr. Grace."

She's angry at him, angrier than she's ever been at him. Because he's using his kids to try get out of this, because he's a coward, because he's forcing her hand. Like, she rubbed her eyes, is that "tired of his bullshit" or is it "about to cry"? She looks pained. We don't focus on it because Grace isn't focusing on it, but like... she's not cold about this.

#yes!!#I will never not shout about this scene and stratt #we all focus on grace and his reaction because he is our protagonist and we’re seeing everything through his eyes #and putting ourselves in his shoes #but eva’s reaction is just as important and valid and ugh #she relied on him and he knew and he refused and ugh #plus we have to talk about how far he pushes her not only by using his students as a shield #but actively threatening sabotauge #would he have gone through with it? no #but he threw that risk out there anyways #the book reads harsher because the circumstances were harsher and you had two very scared people lashing out #the movie is softer because we see both of them recognizing the tragedy of it or at least we the audience recognize the tragedy #anyways I love them #both of them #phm
