Yellow and green ...
Favorite quilt this year ... [Ag Fair 2018}
In the dog days of summer, any gardener who can find lovely flowers for the Fair is doing well. The summer-blue hydrangeas do not fare well in the heat of August, no matter the blue-ribbon quality on the day they were first picked. I love the cobalt blue vases with the orange lantana. [Ag Fair 2018]
So many categories, so many entries! The exhibits are all in the old barn, aka the Ag Hall. Dances and other events are held here year-round. [Ag Fair August 2018]

Birds took the top ribbons at the Photography Competiton at the annual Agricultural Fair in West Tisbury. Going to the Ag Fair to see the exhibits, look at the livestock and chickens, watch the bull competition, and eat bar-b-que and roasted corn on the cobb is an annual end-of-summer pleasure. One makes the most of the remaining days before living on a schedule with alarm clocks, bells, and recess duty.
Another trip, another year
After another satisfying summer in north Georgia with my lively octogenarian parents, I returned to Marthaâs Vineyard for another school year. I work with the best, smartest, professionial teachers, and itâs great fun to return to the same crew. (August 2018)
A bright spot on the ferry ...
After the 20-hour train trip (and an over-night in Cambridge), the next leg is the ferry from Woodsâ Hole, Mass. to Vineyard Haven. Summer travel - everyone is on the way to Somewhere ... (2018)

Island Life
You know you are living a small-town life when the local newspaper has a three-column article (and photo) titled âPuppy Care Package Pilfered from SSA (ferry) Luggage Cart.
To be fair, there is also an article about corruption in the local police department after a 25-year veteran detective was fired last week. We are a kinder, gentler place, though, so this headline article was placed on Page 2. After all, he has family, friends, neighbors on this Island of 16,00 (winter population), and you might just find yourself standing behind him in the grocery store. Â
Even more interesting is the âPeaceful Protest Against NRA Hits Home.â Do they really expect Molotov cocktails at a Vineyard demonstration? As this demonstration was by 20 local religious leaders on the anniversary of the Sandy Hook Shooting, Iâm not sure the adjective âpeacefulâ was really necessary.
In a time when many newspapers are struggling to survive, it is a mark of the culture on the Island that we have two weekly papers. The Vineyard Gazette is the pre-Civil War âstandards in journalismâ paper, and the MV Times is the less prestigious. Both are valued by the community, and circulate widely.
Christmas Cards
This year Iâm not sending Christmas cards, but one reminded me that friends flung far depended on my tumblr posts to peek into my world. I may be one of five people in America not on Facebook, so it may be time to embrace tumblr again and put a bit of effort into it.
I suppose my that since Iâm no longer on sabbatical, I took a tumblr sabbatical. Hereâs to a new year, new directions, and valuable connections with cherished friends - near and far.

Butterflies in Momâs garden ... together with the hummingbirds, there is color flitting about all day long.
The mysterious house on the hill we pass every time we go anywhere. Â The field is cut for hay several times during the summer, but the occupant of the house is never seen.
