Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret. (Kelly Fremon Craig, 2023)
Sometimes people think they're dealing with a Torment Nexus but what they actually have is a Jumanji. And sometimes people think something's a Jumanji but oops it's a Torment Nexus.
Now. Sometimes you have a third thing- you'll have yourself a Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory. And buddy, I can't help you there.
So a Torment Nexus is something that is either a metaphor for a larger societal problem (e.g. The Platform, The Long Walk) or a social issue/trend taken to an exaggerated extreme (e.g. The Purge), with a lot of shades of grey in between (e.g. Squid Game). If it isn't about a larger societal issue/trend/structure it isn't a Torment Nexus.
A Jumanji can be dangerous and high-stakes (to the characters), but it doesn't need to have a metaphor or lesson, it can easily just be a "Would this be fucked up or what?" situation (e.g. a lotta Goosebumps stories). If there IS a lesson/metaphor, it will be on a smaller scale like psychological issues (e.g. Magnus Archives), family/relationship issues (e.g. Zathura), or about a specific topic (e.g. Magic School Bus). Large-scale social issues may be present (after all, Everything Is Political), but they take a definite backseat.
Now. A Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory is a trap based around morality and vices. These can be cultural, religious, or bonkers bullshit like "children shouldn't chew gum." There is generally not discussion or criticism of this morality system. Regardless of the morality system used, if it's not a trap, it's not a Chocolate Factory.
examples of a willy wonkas chocolate factory include:

Imagine there are grumbles of frustration as Stiles walks into the FBI offices. When he asks what is going on, they say there’s a suspect in interrogation that won’t break, won’t even say a word.
Stiles takes one glance at the file and has to fight the urge to laugh. “Let me take a crack at him.”
“Good luck,” the other agents say, thinking Stiles doesn't stand a chance.
Stiles walks into the interrogation room, and just stands there. He folds his arms over his chest and lifts an eyebrow questioningly.
The guy breaks and talks, telling Stiles everything.
The other agents are floored.
Stiles Stilinski - skinny, flailing, chatty Stiles - broke the infamous Derek Hale with just a look.

I know there was intent to parallel school shootings but I felt more like childhood SA.
The signs that he was being abused were there. But Justine was worried about getting in trouble with overstepping again, and the other kids picked at his softness in the same way Gladys did, nobody noticed his long walk home, the store didn’t glance at a child buying tons of soup every other day, the police had bigger things to worry about, the school avoided calling child services for as long as they could.
Then when other children begin to be abused, the entire community comes together to form mob justice, not to actually fix the problem or become a community that can help take care of children or prevent it from happening, but by finding the “perpetrator” and punishing them with violence - even if they’re wrong.
The drug abuser who has important information isn’t trusted despite actually being correct. The teacher with alcohol abuse problems is doubted in spite of being the only person who wants to investigate the child being abused in front of her. The father who lacked emotional depth with his son hopes to make up for it via revenge, but even then he smashes his way through the world.
The parents that let the abuser into the home are forever apart from their son. The other children revealing the abuser finally makes people believe that something wrong is happening, and the abuser is “eaten alive” by the community, the principal who avoided calling cps for weeks is “destroyed,” and the children can’t speak for years.
basically weapons is about the way the nuclear family doesn't care for children, only their child, and even then it's more about the idea of a child rather than the actual person whose safety and welfare they're responsible for, as well as how america doesn't have community until tragedy strikes, and even then it's not a community as much as it's a mob gathered around a scapegoat, but really at its core it's about a pathetic woman having the worst few days of her life through no fault of her own. and that's why it's gonna be best picture 2026
One year ago today I posted this practically shot Iron Giant photo I created using real figures, lighting, miniature sets & my trusty old tin foil for water technique & cotton wool for the splashes.

Derek: Excellent, I need a fake husband so my family will get off my back. You're hired, and no you don't have to show up to any event but the wedding.
Stiles: I hope this doesn't awaken anything in me.
