I’m rewatching BBC Merlin, and honest to god Angel Coulby does not get nearly enough praise for how incredibly talented she is. She was giving Emmy-award worthy performances as Guinevere on the regular, and not enough people recognized this when the show was airing. Gwen breaking down in the courtroom after Arthur breaks off their engagement and banishes her? The tears, her desperation as she played Gwen conveying her love for Arthur and her confusion as to what just transpired? An absolutely heart-breaking performance, and genuinely one of the best acted scenes I’ve seen on television. The way she conveyed Gwen’s resistance, heartbreak, and mental and physical pain when Morgana tortured her with the mandrake root? An utterly heart-wrenching performance.

And there are so many other examples: Her tears during Lancelot’s funeral, as Gwen tried to convey the exact root of her sadness to Arthur? The way Angel played Gwen realizing on her own that Merlin has magic, and the tears in her eyes and her soft, gentle small smile when she said, “I’m glad,” to Gaius, after the truth of who Merlin was is confirmed to her? The way her voice broke on, “I’m fine,” after she was let go by Cenred, and Merlin found her with markings on her wrists from when she was bound and kidnapped and asked if she was okay? The way Gwen asked Morgana, both in confusion and anger and hurt, what she did to make Morgana hate her so much? Angel imbued so much nuance into Gwen’s every emotion and into her every action.

To me, Angel Coulby’s performance as Guinevere back when BBC Merlin aired was one of the most underrated on television. And even now, several years after the show ended, her work on the show remains underrated.
