MBTI: ENFP (“The Encourager”)

Camille’s behavior screams Extroverted Intuition (Ne) + Introverted Feeling (Fi). He lived for ideas in the moment as opposed to long-range plans (sorry cam-cam). On 12 July 1789 he improvised a rallying speech at the Palais-Royal, inventing a green “cockade of hope” and urging the crowd to revolt ⁴ ⁵. IMPROVISED!!! How cool is that!! You're telling me that man used only his “rapid and breathless pen” in order to ride the revolutionary torrent? Well, that's what he's telling us ⁶!!! This Ne-dominance shows in his creative flair and in how he juuuumped from one cause to the next (writing pamphlets, launching newspapers, then Le Vieux Cordelier to denounce tyranny) whenever new injustices appeared.

Evidence for Ne:  

He told readers “we no longer have any journals that tell the truth… I return to the arena” with all “my well-known honesty and courage” ⁷ meaning he responded in real time rather than following a set plan. He (apparently) famously shouted to Parisians “Take, all of you, green cockades, the color of hope!” ⁸, inspiring immediate action. All signs point to a big-picture, associative thinker more than a detailed planner.

Evidence for Fi:

Camille’s driving motive was personal conviction probably more than social harmony, may chance. He laced even political arguments with intense emotion: on trial he lamented that men could be “so ferocious and so unjust” ²,  and in love letters he called his wife “my Vesta, my Angel” (a phrase dripping with worship) ⁹. His loyalty seemed to be to individuals and ideals — e.g. he defended Danton, begged clemency for common prisoners — rather than to any bureaucracy: For a man that operated on personal loyalty and emotional conviction — his shifts from Robespierre to Danton to turning and attacking the Terror on principle are all pretty telling of a man who lives by the logic of “this feels wrong now, so I will say it publicly and deal with the consequences later.”

Tertiary Te / Inferior Ni (Yeowch): 

Desmoulins could argue and execute orders (his pamphlets and editorials are often very logical and well-written), but he never seemed to think systematically like a Te‐titan. He knew how to wield facts, but only in service of his Fi ideals. He even admitted that a man in power can’t “say all he thinks” or he’ll risk the country ¹⁰ — a very Te‐like awareness that ruthless politics require some strategy: Yet planning was not his natural stance. He often got swept up in the passion and later realized maybe it wasn’t so wise (e.g. he fervently launched Cordelier critiques without a backup plan and ended up arrested).

His weakest function was Intuition (Ni): he failed to foresee how fast alliances would shatter. Weighing the evidence, Camille’s core motivation is authenticity and emotional depth — the hallmarks of Type 4 — with a 3‐wing that craved recognition.

He's not a 7w6, because a lot of people like to fall for what I like to dub the “He’s energetic and impulsive!!” trap. At first glance, Camille absolutely looks 7-coded:

So I get why people land on 7w6!! It's not unfounded!! But the core motivation falls apart under scrutiny: 7s are driven by avoiding inner pain, reframing negativity, and staying psychologically mobile — guess what Camille does

In prison letters to Lucile, he doesn’t reframe or escape his fear—he dwells in it, vividly and repeatedly.. In Le Vieux Cordelier, he doesn’t pivot to safer, more optimistic narratives — he becomes increasingly fixated on injustice, moral outrage, and disillusionment.. When the Revolution turns violent, he doesn’t distract himself or move on — he confronts it emotionally and publicly, even when it’s dangerous

Also. also. different point. But: Camille did display a sort of 8-ish toughness (eh.. debatable): Core 8s crave control and fear being controlled; while Camille wanted respect and freedom (he even cynically noted that his critics “at bottom… wish to have a son like me” ¹¹ ), his primary focus was still inner feeling and self-expression, not raw power. He didn’t ruthlessly take charge of situations for its own sake — he often got carried away by ideals instead.

Now I'm. realizing how big this section is while so far only consisting of counter-arguments.. Everything about Murat screams dominant Extraverted Sensing, in my opinion; Se-doms are not planners, they are responders!! They operate in the now — and they trust their reflexes over abstractions.

Murat seemed to have less of a penchant to conceptualize war than to.. hand gestures. ride into it.

It is EXTREMELY obvious that, under Napoleon Bonaparte, Murat repeatedly distinguished himself not through strategy writing or logistical planning, but instead through physical immediacy (I mean their first meeting was Murat champing at the bit to help Bonaparte out for gods sake.) He led charges personally and he reacted faster than others could think.

Boy had an environmental immersion to him that is pretty prominent; Murat’s brilliance lay in his ability to read terrain, morale, and movement in real time. Cavalry command often requires split-second spatial processing. cause you can't really. theorize on horseback; you have to sense.

Contrast him with some of the others whose clear strengths lay in strategic foresight and abstract war architecture, and you start to see why our boy has himself a bit of extraverted sensing.

II. Auxiliary Fi: The Emotional Sovereign

Here is where, I believe, some people get Murat wrong, because naturally it should be logical to assume Extraverted Feeling (Fe) because he was theatrical: But Murat’s emotional life was not group-oriented!! It was personal, internal, pride-driven, and thaaaaaat is Introverted Feeling (Fi).

His loyalty to Napoleon was more. devotional. than bureaucratic; Murat attached intensely to individuals and not institutions.

Even when he later betrayed Napoleon in 1814 to secure his Neapolitan throne, it did not come from cold Te opportunism. It came from a deeply personal fear of losing identity and sovereignty, and Fi under threat becomes self-preserving.

Murat was not incompetent administratively — and frankly this is an unfair simplification. As King of Naples, he implemented reforms, reorganized the army, and attempted modernization. But his governance lacked long-term structural coherence.

He could execute orders, and he could manage operations, but he did not naturally think in systems..

I Don't Know What To Title This Portion

I’d also say that there is a subtle but crucial difference in the way that 7w8 energy feels expansive while 8w7 energy feels forceful.

7w8 seemingly has a more. “I will outrun defeat.” while the 8w7 might think something more like “I will overpower defeat.”

Murat, AS ESTABLISHED!! Did not outrun anything, but instead charged at it; and even his final execution — refusing blindfold, commanding the firing squad is not an escapist bravado, but reads more like. dominance maintained until the last second.

Where I Do Agree With 7w8

He absolutely has strong 7-wing qualities:

But ahem ahem. wing ≠ core. And If he were 7-core, humiliation would sting less than confinement, but againnn, Murat has to be sooo relatable and consider humiliation at an existential level.

So.. Do I Reject 7w8 Entirely?

No!! Actually!!! I think 7w8 is defensible if someone focuses mainly on his cavalry recklessness, his flamboyance, or his pleasure-seeking.. But I think it collapses under analysis of his own rigidity surrounding his identity and the paranoia that plagued him most of his life

MBTI: ESFP — yes, I agree with that consensus.

Enneagram: 8w7 over 7w8 Specifically sx-dominant 8.

But I respect why 7w8 is popular!! It’s not a ridiculous typing — it’s just a very convincing surface-level to me.
