Veggie heaven, running incidents and the beauty of being lost
Today, I finally got around to put on my beloved running shoes and go for a long run around Cairo. I’ve been hesitant to run in this city for various reasons: it’s dirty and polluted, it’s crowded and hot, the traffic is crazy and everyone stares at me (I prefer to run in the dark when no one can see me). But the thing is I love running and it’s been way too long since I left the Swedish forests so I would probably get more crazy from not running at all, than I would from running in this dirty and sometimes crazy city.
So how was it? Well I almost started to cry a couple of times due to all the dust and shit that kept getting into my eyes (but, crying is a good way for the body to detox I’ve heard), I was almost run over by a car (but, hey only once), I got stared at, honked at and called out by men (but, I didn’t understand what they said and I kept my music on loud so I almost didn’t notice) and then I got lost half of the time, (BUT you know what they say right?! It is only when you are lost that you can be found (or something along those lines)).
So as I was running around trying to find my way back to Agouza, I got a bit lost - I thought I was in Zamalek, but I was actually in Dokki and I even ended up running inside a cafe for a little while as I was trying to find the right street. (yeah, don’t ask me how this happened, let’s just say I’m very good at getting lost and running into things.. ) Yet, it ended up being a perfect morning - I got to see parts of the city that I haven’t seen before and I found the most amazing veggie and fruit markets (vegan heaven!).
In my mind, to get lost in a new city is actually the best way of experience a new place. It is always when I get lost that I find my favorite places that are not touristy and commercialized. So go and get lost :P
